General Rosary Intention: That the Lord in His Divine Mercy – through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary – may build up His Kingdom, make these mysteries a reality in our lives, strengthen us in our common mission, and come to the aid of those for whom we pray.
Africa (Green Beads)
Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of Saint Agnes of Rome, the Patron Saint of Rape Victims, may come to the aid of those sexually assaulted by rebels in the DR of Congo. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Africa.
Disaster (Rape by Rebels) Map of Congo Extract from UN peacekeepers ‘failed’ DR Congo rape victims: “Atul Khare told the Security Council that the scale of systematic rape by armed rebels was far worse than feared. He said that up to 500 women and children were now believed raped in recent weeks – more than double the previously reported figure. He called for the prosecution of Rwandan and Congolese rebels who are blamed for many of the attacks. . . .Mr Khare, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping, . . . reported to the Security Council that although 242 rapes had earlier been reported in and around Luvungi, a village not far from a UN peacekeepers’ camp, 260 more rapes had come to light in the Uvira area and other regions of N. and S. Kivu. Mr Khare said he had learned of 74 attacks in a village called Miki, in South Kivu. The victims included 21 children – all girls aged between seven and 15 – and six men. All the women in another village, Kiluma, may have been systematically raped, he said. ‘While the primary responsibility for protection of civilians lies with the state, its national army and police force, clearly, we have also failed,’ he said.” See also: Rape by Regular Army a Growing Problem, HRW Says and video: U.N. puts Congo sex attacks at more than 500, and U. Saint Agnes of Rome (Patron Saint of Rape Victims) (Feast Date: January 21) Extract from Saint Agnes of Rome: “At age 12 or 13 Agnes was ordered to sacrifice to pagan gods and to lose her virginity by rape. She was taken to a Roman temple to Minerva (Athena), and when led to the altar, she made the Sign of the Cross. She was threatened, and then tortured when she refused to turn against God. Several young men presented themselves, offering to marry her, whether from lust or pity is not known. She said that to do so would be an insult to her heavenly spouse that she would keep her consecrated virginity intact, accept death, and see Christ. A martyr, she is mentioned in First Eucharistic Prayer. On her feast day two lambs are blessed at her church in Rome, Italy and then their wool is woven into the palliums (bands of white wool) which the Pope confers on archbishops as the symbol of their jurisdiction.” See picture of St. Agnes. Extract from Earthquake strikes Christchurch in New Zealand: “A powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand’s South Island last night, causing widespread damage to buildings, although there were few injuries. Christchurch mayor Bob Parker declared a state of emergency four hours after tremors rocked the region, warning that continuing aftershocks could cause masonry to fall from damaged buildings. The quake hit 19 miles west of the city, on the east coast of the island, at 4.35am local time. Residents reported collapsed buildings and bridges, as well as power cuts. Christchurch, which has a population of around 400,000 people, was then rocked with a series of sharp aftershocks. No deaths have been reported so far but doctors at Christchurch Hospital said they had treated two men with serious injuries. One was hit by a falling chimney and was in intensive care, while a second was seriously hurt after being cut by glass, a hospital spokeswoman said. Other minor injuries have also been reported. ‘There is considerable damage in the central city,’ police inspector Mike Coleman told New Zealand’s National Radio. . . ” See also: Gales, aftershocks shake quake-hit New Zealand city, New Zealand earthquake ‘damaged 100,000 homes‘, Latest news: Christchurch earthquake, Christchurch rocked by earthquake: Latest News, and Videos: Aftershocks rock New Zealand after massive quake, Damage assessment continues in quake stricken New Zealand.
Saint Honoratus of Arles (Patron Saint against Misfortune) (Feast Date: January 16) Extract from St. Honoratus: “Archbishop of Arles; b. about 350; . . . It is believed that he was born in the north of Gaul and that he belonged to an illustrious pagan family. Converted to Christianity with his brother Venantius, he embarked with him from Marseilles about 368, under the guidance of a holy person named Caprasius, . . . They returned to Gaul through Italy, and, after having stopped at Rome, Honoratus went on into Provence and, encouraged by Leontius, Bishop of Fréjus, took up his abode in the wild island of Lérins with the intention of living there in solitude. Numerous disciples soon gathered around him and thus was founded the monastery, which has enjoyed so great a celebrity and which was during the fifth and sixth centuries a nursery for illustrious bishops and remarkable ecclesiastical writers. Honoratus’s reputation for sanctity throughout the south-eastern portion of Gaul was such that in 426 after the assassination of Patroclus, Archbishop of Arles, he was summoned from his solitude to succeed to the government of the diocese, which the Arian and Manichaean heresies had greatly disturbed. He appears to have succeeded in re-establishing order and orthodoxy, while still continuing to direct from afar the monks of Lérins. However, the acts of his brief pontificate are not known. He died in the arms of Hilary, one of his disciples and probably a relative, who was to succeed him in the See of Arles.” See picture of Saint Honoratus of Arles (left) and Genesius of Arles (right). Disaster (Suicide Bombing) Map of Ossetia Extract from Bloodshed at market bombing in N Ossetia: “A suicide bomber has unleashed a powerful explosion at a busy market in Russia’s north Caucasus region, killing at least 16 people and wounding scores more. It happened in Vladikavkaz in North Ossetia. The Russian prosecutor’s office said the bomb contained the equivalent of 30-40 kilos of high explosive and was packed with metal bars, bolts and ball-bearings to maximise its deadly effect. . . .One boy said: ‘All the windows were broken in school. We all ran out, it was very dangerous there.’ Though North Ossetia is predominantly Orthodox Christian, many Muslims were shopping for the end of Ramadan. A one year old baby boy was among the dead. Investigators say 77 people were wounded.” See also: Car Bomb Explodes in Market in Restive Region of Russia. Videos: Suicide Blast In North Ossetia and Blast rips through Russian market.
Saint Andrew Avellino (Patron Saint against Sudden Death) (Feast Date: November 10). Extract from: St. Andrew Avellino, Confessor “At school he had the fear of God always before his eyes, and dreaded the very shadow of the least sin. A beautiful complexion exposed his chastity to several snares and dangers; which he escaped by assiduous prayer, mortification, watchfulness over himself, and care in shunning all dangerous company. . . . After mature deliberation he took the ecclesiastical tonsure, and was sent to Naples to study the civil and canon law. Being there promoted to the degree of doctor in laws, and to the dignity of the priesthood, he began to plead such causes in the ecclesiastical court, as the canons allow clergymen to undertake. This employment, however, engrossed his thoughts, too much dissipated his mind, and insensibly weakened his affection for holy meditation and prayer. A fault into which he fell opened his eyes, and made him see the precipice which lay before him. Once in pleading a cause, in a matter indeed which was of no weight, a lie escaped him; for which, upon reading these words of holy scripture, The mouth that lieth killeth the soul, he was struck with so great remorse and deep compunction . . . his whole conduct was a model of perfect virtue. . . . .” See picture of St. Andrew Avellino.
