Africa (Green Beads)
Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of Saint Valentine, the Patron Saint of Travelers, may come to the aid of those affected by the Zanzibar Ferry Disaster. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Africa.
Disaster — Zanzibar Ferry Disaster Map of Zanzibar Extract from: Zanzibar ferry disaster: Hopes fade for missing: “Hopes are fading for more than 80 people still missing after a Tanzanian ferry sank near Zanzibar’s main island. At least 63 people are known to have died in the disaster and about 145 have been rescued. The MV Skagit ferry had left the city of Dar es Salaam on mainland Tanzania on Wednesday with 290 people on board. Survivors have told the BBC that the crew gave them no instructions on how to evacuate and merely told them to calm down. They say there was only one exit and that many people were trapped and went down with the ship when it sank off Chumbe island. Some passengers have told how they jumped overboard, clinging to life-boats that automatically inflated, until they were rescued by a tug.‘I tried to hang on to [my nine-month-old son] but he disappeared into the sea’ Tatu Kwiyela A naval search operation resumed at first light, but was being hampered by bad weather. ‘Search operations continue but it is now almost impossible survivors will be found,’ Zanzibar police spokesman Mohamed Mhina told reporters. ‘The weather was very bad, there were big waves and strong wind.’ See also: Tanzania ferry rescue halted, 146 presumed dead. Saint Valentine: Patron Saint of Travelers (Feast Date: February 14) Extract from St. Valentine: “Saints are not supposed to rest in peace; they’re expected to keep busy: to perform miracles, to intercede. . . . One legend says, while awaiting his execution, Valentinus restored the sight of his jailer’s blind daughter. Another legend says, on the eve of his death, he penned a farewell note to the jailer’s daughter, signing it, “From your Valentine.” St. Valentine was a Priest, martyred in 269 at Rome and was buried on the Flaminian Way. He is the Patron Saint of affianced couples, bee keepers, engaged couples, epilepsy, fainting, greetings, happy marriages, love, lovers, plague, travelers, and young people. He is represented in pictures with birds and roses.”See also: February 14 – Saint Valentine: Patron Saint of Travellers, Against Plagues. PRAYER to St. Valentine.
Oceania (Blue Beads)
Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the Patron Saint of Australia, may come to the aid of those affected by Aboriginal suicide in that country. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Oceania.
Disaster: Aboriginal Suicide Map of Australia Extract from Stolen Lives: why are indigenous Australians killing themselves?: “Aboriginal suicide first emerged in Australian records in 1960s. In the 1980s, there was a surge of Aboriginal suicide starting with adults, then young adults and now, 30 years later, children. Suicide among Aboriginal communities is now three to four times the rate of non-Aboriginal suicide. Aboriginal people commit suicide, on average, at a far younger age than non-Aboriginal Australians, with reports of prepubescent children, some as young as eight committing suicide. The rise in suicide in recent decades is not a solitary phenomenon — it is happening around the globe to many colonised races. The Inuit people of Canada, Native Americans and New Zealand Maoris are exhibiting the same behavioural patterns. Ironically, all groups began committing suicide in huge numbers in recent decades as they were given greater rights and acknowledgement for past and present wrongs. Academics, experts and Aborigines themselves are trying to make sense of the unprecedented spike. . . . Professor Tatz has spent many years trying to understand why Aboriginal people have started committing suicide in recent decades, when comparatively speaking, life is improving.” See also: Call for funding for Aboriginal suicide prevention. Saint Thérèse of Lisieux: Patron Saint of Australia (Feast Date: October 1) Extract from Her Thoughts and Words about…Prayer: “Prayer is, for me, an outburst from the heart; it is a simple glance darted upwards to Heaven; it is a cry of gratitude and of love in the midst of trial as in the midst of joy! In a word, it is something exalted, supernatural, which dilates the soul and unites it to God. Sometimes when I find myself, spiritually, in dryness so great that I cannot produce a single good thought, I recite very slowly a Pater or an Ave Maria; these prayers alone console me, they suffice, they nourish my soul. — Story of A Soul, Chapter X” See PICTURE of SaintTherese of Lisieux. Disaster — Mudslides Map of AustriaExtract from One dead as mudslides, flooding cause havoc in Austria: “Mudslides unleashed by torrential rains killed one man, wrecked houses and cut off villages in the Austrian province of Styria, authorities there have said. Police in the southeastern province said they had found the body of a 47-year-old local man swept away by a mudslide on Friday night in the town of Thoerl. Several small communities near Liezen were stranded by blocked roads. Austrian broadcaster ORF said helicopters evacuated around 20 people from the area after mudslides up to 10 metres high made travel by road impossible. A further 360 people had to leave their homes in the town of Sankt Lorenzen for fear of more slides given unrelenting rainfall, authorities said.” See also: Mudslides cut off villages, kill man in Austria, Austria: mudslides up to 10 meters high devastated province of Styria. Saint Colman of Stockerau: Patron Saint of Austria (Feast Date: October 13) Extract fromSaint Colman of Stockerau: “While on a pilgrimage to the Holy Lands, Colman was stopped by the Viennese on suspicion of being a Moravian spy; there was continual fighting between Austria, Moravia and Bohemia, and a stranger who spoke no German was immediately suspect. With no evidence other than being a stranger, he was convicted of espionage, tortured, and hanged with two thieves. In the tradition of the time, the bodies were left to rot as a warning to others. Colman’s body hung there for 18 months, incorrupt, and untouched by animals. Miracles were reported at the site, including the scaffolding taking root and putting out branches. In 1015, bishop Megingard transferred Colman’s relics to Melk, Austria where they were entombed in an abbey on the Danube. The tomb became a site of miracles, and four popes have granted indulgences to those who call on his intercession.” See also: October 13: Saint Colman of Stockerau, Patron Saint of Austria, Horse, Cattle, against Plagues.
America (Red Beads)
Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Mary, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, the Patron Saint of Colorado and the Archdiocese of Denver, may come to the aid of those affected by the Dark Knight Shootings in Aurora, Colorado, U.S.A. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in America.
Disaster (Dark Knight Movie Theater Shooting) Map of Colorado, U. S. A. Extract from Joint Statement of Archbishop Samuel Aquila and Bishop James Conley on Aurora Shootings: “Last night at the Century Movie Theater in Aurora, a gunman walked into a full theater and opened fire on scores of moviegoers. In the largest mass shooting in America in more than five years, 12 people were killed and about 50 were wounded by gunfire. We are shocked and saddened by this tragedy. Our hearts and prayers go out to those impacted by this evil act. In the chaos of the moment, people poured from the movie theater into the darkness of the night—the darkness of confusion, of ambiguity, of despair. We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters cast into that darkness. They do not stand alone. As Catholic bishops, we ‘weep with those who weep.’ But in Aurora, which means “the dawn,” the sun rose this morning. In a city whose name evokes the light, people of hope know that the darkness may be overcome. For those who were killed, our hope is the tender mercy of our God. ‘Neither death nor life,’ reflected St. Paul, ‘can separate us from the love of God.’ We commend their souls, and their families and friends, to God’s enduring love.” See also: Gunman kills at least 12 in rampage at Colorado movie theater, Lives that ended in an Aurora theater shooting were full of promise,Theologian Dale Recinella Responds to Biblical Justification of Death Penalty,. Saint Mary, Immaculate Conception: Patron Saint of Colorado and the Archdiocese of Denver (Feast Date: December 8) Extract from Immaculate Conception: “In the Constitution Ineffabilis Deus of 8 December, 1854, Pius IX pronounced and defined that the Blessed Virgin Mary “in the first instance of her conception, by a singular privilege and grace granted by God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the human race, was preserved exempt from all stain of original sin.’ ‘The Blessed Virgin Mary..’ The subject of this immunity from original sin is the person of Mary at the moment of the creation of her soul and its infusion into her body. . . . The formal active essence of original sin was not removed from her soul, as it is removed from others by baptism; it was excluded, it never was in her soul. Simultaneously with the exclusion of sin. The state of original sanctity, innocence, and justice, as opposed to original sin, was conferred upon her, by which gift every stain and fault, all depraved emotions, passions, and debilities, essentially pertaining to original sin, were excluded.” See also: December 8 – Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception: Patron Saint of Colorado, Archdiocese of Denver, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo.
