Africa (Green Beads)
Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Adelard of Corbie, the Patron Saint of those with Typhoid, may come to the aid of those affected by illness in Zimbabwe. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Africa.
Disaster (Typhoid) Map of Zimbabwe Extract fromTyphoid cases surge in Zimbabwe: “Zimbabwean health officials have called for an overhaul of the country’s water and sanitation systems amid an outbreak of typhoid that has affected more than 1,500 people. Henry Madzorera, Zimbabwe’s health minister, said the country is reporting up to 50 cases of typhoid a day. “By the end of December 2011, more than 1,500 cases had been seen and treated,” Madzorera told a news conference in the capital, Harare, on Tuesday. An average of 30 to 50 cases are reported on a daily basis.’ Since the current outbreak started last October, 350 suspected cases and 16 confirmations were reported in the first three weeks of this year. No deaths have been reported up to now. Saint Adalard of Corbie (Patron Saint of those with Typhoid) (Feast Date: January 2) Extract from St. Adelard: “Adelard was the grandson of Charles Martel, nephew of King Pepin and first cousin to Charlemagne. He became a monk at Corbie in Picardy in 773. Eventually he was chosen abbot, and became Charlemagne’s counselor. He was forced by the king to quit the monastery and work for him as chief minister for his son Pepin. He was accused of supporting a rival power (Bernard) against Emperor Louis the Debonair and was banished to a monastery on the island of Heri. Five years later he was recalled to the king’s court (821). He later retired to the Abbey at Corbie and died January 2 after an illness. Disaster (Rabaul Queen Ferry Accident) Map of Papua New Guinea Extract from 238 rescued in Papua New Guinea ferry sinking; dozens unaccounted for: “Rescuers were searching Friday for nearly 120 people unaccounted for after a passenger ferry sank off the east coast of Papua New Guinea, authorities said. The 238 known survivors arrived by five vessels at the city of Lae. Many were undergoing medical tests, according to Capt. Nurur Rahman, rescue coordinator with the country’s National Maritime Safety Authority. About 350 people were aboard the MV Rabaul Queen when it sank Thursday, said Rahman. The MV Rabaul Queen went down about 16 kilometers (10 miles) off Cape Fortification in the Vitiaz Strait after getting into trouble early Thursday, officials said. The ferry is about 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) below the surface, Rahman said. After an alert was sent out, boats and helicopters rushed to the scene to try to save scores of people left adrift at sea by the sinking. Saint Valentine (Patron Saint of Travelers) (Feast Date: February 14) Extract from The Legend of St. Valentine: “The date of this Saint Valentine’s birth is not known. Along with Saint Marius and his family, Saint Valentine assisted the martyrs during the persecution they suffered under the rule of Claudius II (also known as Claudius the Goth and Claudius the Cruel). In addition, since Rome was at the time involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns, the emperor found it difficult to recruit the male populace into joining his military leagues. Believing this to be because Roman men were adverse to leaving their loved ones or their familes, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements within the City of Rome. Saint Valentine and Saint Marius, however, continued to perform wedding ceremonies in secret. When is was discovered that Saint Valentine was defying the emperor’s decree, he was apprehended and dispatched by Claudius to the Prefect of Rome who, being unable to force the saint to renounce Christianity, ordered that Valentine be clubbed, stoned and then beheaded. According to tradition, while Valentine waited in prison for his execution, he corresponded with those under his care by sending letters and love notes to his parishioners. It is also believed that while incarcerated, the Bishop fell in love with a young woman who visited him during his confinement. According to some sources, this was the blind daughter (whose name may have been Julia) of of Asterius, the jailer. It is said tht God enabled Valentine to miraculously restore the girl’s sight. Popular belief indicates that Valentine’s farewell message to his love contained a closing that has now transcended time: ‘”From Your Valentine.’” See PICTURE of St. Valentine. Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Clare of Assisi, the Patron Saint for Good Weather, may come to the aid of those affected by extreme cold weather throughout Europe. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters throughout Europe.
Disaster (Extreme Cold Weather) Map of Europe Extract from Hundreds of Deaths as Europe Struggles With Snow Amid an Intense Cold Snap: “Extreme cold and heavy snow buried parts of Europe over the past few days, claiming the lives of hundreds of people, straining utilities in France, snarling transportation in Britain and leaving people in cities like Rome stymied. Eastern Europe was particularly hard hit. Ukraine’s Ministry of Emergencies reported that at least 131 people had died during a cold snap that has lasted more than a week in which night temperatures have dropped well below freezing. Hundreds have been treated for hypothermia or frostbite. Many of the victims in Eastern Europe were homeless people. In Poland, the PAP news agency reported that Prime Minister Donald Tusk had asked local authorities to waive the ban on admitting inebriated people to homeless shelters after eight more people died, bringing the death toll from the storm to 53 in Poland. The Bosnian government used helicopters to carry food and supplies to remote villages buried under six feet of snow. More than 10,000 people are trapped, Reuters reported. Saint Clare of Assisi (Patron Saint for Good Weather) (Feast Dates: August 11, September 23, October 3) Extract from St. Clare: “Clare was a beautiful Italian noblewoman who became the Foundress of an order of nuns now called “Poor Clares.” When she heard St. Francis of Assisi preach, her heart burned with a great desire to imitate Francis and to live a poor humble life for Jesus. So one evening, she ran away from home, and in a little chapel outside Assisi, gave herself to God. St. Francis cut off her hair and gave her a rough brown habit to wear, tied with a plain cord around her waist. Her parents tried in every way to make her return home, but Clare would not. Soon her sister, St. Agnes joined her, as well as other young women who wanted to be brides of Jesus, and live without any money. St. Clare and her sisters wore no shoes, ate no meat, lived in a poor house, and kept silent most of the time. Disaster (Earthquake) Map of Peru Extract from Peru quake injury numbers rise: “The number of people confirmed injured in an earthquake in Peru rose to 145, civil defense officials in the South American nation said Tuesday. The number of homes damaged or destroyed rose to 277, they said. Civil defense officials have been distributing tents to families whose houses were affected by the quake early Monday morning, they said Tuesday. The magnitude 6.3 quake hit about 15 kilometers (9 miles) southeast of Ica, at a depth of 39.2 kilometers (24.4 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It affected power in the region, but as of Tuesday, it had been restored in the districts of Parcona, Tinguina, Ocucaje and Ica, officials said. Most of the injured had gone home by Tuesday morning, although six remain in hospitals, they said — three each in the Regional Hospital and the Santa Maria de Socorro Hospital. Saint Emygdius (Patron Saint against Earthquakes) (Feast Date: August 5) Extract from St. Emygdius: “St. Emygdius,was consecrated bishop by Pope St. Marcellus, and sent thither to preach the Gospel. He received the crown of martyrdom for the confession of Christ under Emperor Diocletian. Emygdius was a very successful missionary to Trier, Germany. However, when he started smashing pagan idols, the non-converts revolted, and he had to flee to Rome for safety. When he returned to his mission, he was martyred by pagans before he could convert anyone else. He died beheaded in the year c.303. Disaster (Violence) Map of Syria Extract from Syrian forces attack Homs on eve of Lavrov visit: “A Syrian military assault on Homs killed dozens of people on the eve of a visit to Damascus by Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov aimed at pressing President Bashar al-Assad to end an 11-month uprising by implementing swift reform. The violence Monday came as world powers scrambled for a diplomatic strategy after the defeat of a U.N. Security Council resolution backing an Arab League call for Assad to give up power and start a political transition. A member of the main opposition Syrian National Council said Assad’s forces killed 50 people in a sustained bombardment of Homs, a center of armed opposition to his rule, two days after activists reported 200 people were killed in shelling. Syrian authorities, who have denied firing on houses, said security forces killed “tens of terrorists” in Homs Monday morning. An Interior Ministry statement said six members of the security forces were killed in the clashes. Saint Irene of Thessalonica (Patron Saint of Peace) (Feast Dates: April 3, April 5, May 5) Extract from Irene of Thessalonica: “Sister of Saint Agape and Saint Chionia. Convicted of possessing the Scriptures despite a prohibition issued in 303 by Emperor Diocletian, and of refusing food that had been offered to the gods. Following the martyrdom of her sisters, Irene was also ordered to deny the faith; she refused. She was sent to a house of prostitution, and when she was unmolested after being exposed naked and chained, she was executed. Martyr.’ See PICTURE of Saint Irene. The Immaculate Conception-Our Lady of Lourdes
First, recite the Prayer to the Immaculate Conception.
PRAYER TO THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
O God, who by the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
did prepare a worthy dwelling place for Your Son,
we beseech You that, as by the foreseen death of this, Your Son,
You did preserve Her from all stain, so too You would permit us, purified through Her intercession, to come unto You. Through the same Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end. Amen.
Second, recite the appropriate prayer of each of the 9 days…
DAY ONE – O most Holy Virgin, who was pleasing to the Lord and became His mother,
immaculate in body and spirit, in faith and in love,
look kindly on me as I implore your powerful intercession. O most Holy Mother,
who by your blessed Immaculate Conception, from the first moment of your conception
did crush the head of the enemy, receive our prayers as we implore you

We thank you for your maternal protection and for the many blessings that we have received through your wondrous mercy and most powerful intercession. In all our necessities we have recourse to you with unbounded confidence.

Earthquake Update – Abruzzo – Research – Rainbow Study
A significant part of the CTF-SOS DRS response to the April 2009 earthquake in Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy was a research project spearheaded by the CTF, Bambin Gesu Hospital and EMR. The research results were presented publicly for the first time at an international conference in May 2010 in Rome.
Recently, the primary researcher – Dr. Stefano Vicari – received the following good news from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

I am delighted to inform you that your submission entitled, Child Psychopathology and Natural Disasters: The Italian Experience After L’aquila Earthquake, has been accepted for inclusion as a New Research Poster presentation at the AACAP/CACAP Joint Annual Meeting in Toronto, ON, Canada, October 18-23, 2011.
The research done was an attempt on the part of the CTF and its collaborators to shed some light on the trauma experienced by children/adolescents as a result of natural disasters. The issue of the incidence of PTSD and other mental disorders in children in the wake of disasters is one that merits further study. CTF-SOS DRS hopes to be a continued part of that research.

The organization seeks a person who is people-oriented, hardworking, trustworthy, and a team player who will serve as an English as a Second Language Teacher. We are currently seeking teachers for the 2 month period from August 15-October 15, 2011. Candidates may choose to stay for more than 2 months, but that is the minimum stay.
This person will work under the supervision of the ESL Program Coordinator. As such he or she will help implement the program through teaching English to Haitians and other foreigners. Further program details will be discussed in the initial interview.
Required is an ability to use and teach the English language well (written and verbal); creativity, good people skills, a minimum stay in Haiti of 2 months.
The ESL teacher must show a willingness to live the mission of CTF-SOS DRS and participate as a community member.
Very helpful would be a knowledge of French and/or the Kreyol language; previous missionary experience.
An initial interview will be conducted by telephone or in person if possible. Once accepted, the applicant will undergo a brief period of orientation/preparation and then fly to Port au Prince, Haiti to reside in the community. Expenses related to travel, room and board will be covered by CTF-SOS DRS. Personal expenses will be the responsibility of the volunteer. Dear Confreres,
Today, Dec 11, 2010, is the 4th day we have been working at the medical camps; the fatigued medical personnel and volunteers are beginning to feel the effects of long hours of hard work, exposure to dust, and harsh weather conditions.
When we first arrived in the area, we were guided to a village in the heart of the barren wilderness. The surrounding land is infertile and inhospitable, empty other than a few rocks scattered here and there. The people in the nearby public building have lost their homes to the floods. Surprisingly, the community is well-populated, despite the inhumane living conditions.
We met with Mr. Mamtaz, the President of the Roshni Development Organization (RDO), who explained to us how the people in the area had been abandoned by the NGOs and political parties. Under the direction of Mr. Stanley David, member of the RDO and our collaborator, we set up a medical camp. Our efforts were received with gratitude by Mr. Mamtaz, Mr. Stanley, and the approximately two hundred patients who were treated. Many people notice the banner on our van advertising free medical care, which gives them somewhat of an idea of who we are and of the services we provide.
Shortly after our arrival, we were greeted by a woman who told us that she was not producing milk for her infant child. It dawned on us that we had neglected to bring Lactogin with us. We noticed that several of the other newborns appeared malnourished, weak and fragile; the nursing mothers, too, appeared to be emaciated. We realized the necessity of stocking the requested item. We made arrangements to acquire Lactogin immediately in a quantity sufficient to supply all the needs of children under six months of age.
The population appears satisfied with the quality of our supplies. The people particularly appreciated our stock of medications such as Panadol (acetaminophen) for pain, Lactogin for the infants and their mothers, and other medicines such as cough syrup, tablets for fever, etc. The inhabitants of the village compare the quality of our services with those of the other NGOs and Government health facilities. They like our work and appreciate our genuine desire to serve, which flows from the heart of St. Camillus. Our presence has been a source of hope and joy for these people, who have been experiencing abandonment.
The mothers were delighted when we photographed their children. Many mothers approached me and requested that I take the pictures of their children. They were very glad for this simple joy. It brought smiles to their faces, which were once withered, seemingly hopeless. The spirit of St. Camillus continues touching the lives of many through the people of good will who bring the “Good News” of health and salvation!
Our presence in the desolate area, the availability of medications and sustenance, has brought new hope to the desolate situation. The people have seemed to gain new life. Their apathy has been replaced by faith and positive energy. They rejoice although they are surrounded by desolate wilderness.
Perhaps Isaiah includes these people when he said: “The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom…” (Is 35:1).

Update
Chile – Phase 1 of Project Humanization Earthquake in Chile comes to an end in December 2010.
Since February 27, 2010, the day of the earthquake, CTF Chile has served many victims with the support of CTF Central, SOS DRS and the Italian Episcopal Conference. In conjunction with the Diocese of Linares, the Camillian Delegation in Chile, the two Camillian female congregations in Chile (the Daughters of Saint Camillus and the Ministers of the Sick,) and Misericordiae (Italy), we have provided the following benefits to the affected populations:
1. Humanitarian Assistance to 5000 families in Parral:
- Provided food, clothing, hygiene kits.
- Paid for the construction of 11 houses;
2. Pastoral Assistance:
- Trained 30 counselors
- Visited patients and staff at the hospitals in Parral and Cauquenes
- Provided intense individual counseling to approximately 300 people. Services were performed by counselors from the Center for Humanization in Madrid.
3. Medical Assistance
- Established mobile medical care to include the delivery of medications and transportation of patients to the hospital
- Provided 2 prefabricated modules:
1. Parral: A pediatric facility with 20 beds MOL, an isolation room, and a neonatal section
2. Cauquenes: Provided hospital with an adult facility with some 20 beds
CTF Chile has provided these facilities to the hospitals in Parral and Cauquenes for a predetermined time period. Together, the two structures will provide for the care of 4,000 patients over the next year.
CTF-SOS DRS is looking to exand its efforts in Chile. During my recent visit (Nov. 18-24, 2010,) I learned that a number of adults and children continue to suffer emotional trauma 9 months after the February earthquake.
CTF-SOS DRS will implement the following strategies on behalf of the traumatized population:
- CTF-SOS DRS will conduct a scientific study to examine the psychological effects of the earthquake on the population.
- CTF-SOS DRS will sponsor a pastoral formation program specific to the needs of the affected population

SOS DRS and Cholera - Cholera 1-18
Josh Kent, a university student from New York, who heard about the work of SOS DRS when I was making a fundraising appeal in Syracuse, New York last summer at St. Ann’s Parish, is our newest volunteer in Haiti.
Josh actually came primarily to teach English to Haitians and foreign volunteers and to integrate in to our community in Port au Prince. But because i wanted him to have a taste of the mission before beginning his work as an ESL teacher, i sent him to Grand Anse to help with the cholera work – almost immediately after his arrival. Josh went with our other new volunteer, Dr. Ed Glavey – a critical care surgeon from Florida. More about Dr. Ed later.
Josh has become an important part of the team assisting Dr. Ed with cholera care; helping SO DRS maintain its inventory; sending reports from the field; helping with other logistics issues. And he has even shown a desire to learn Kreyol, something which makes me happy. It is a beautiful language, and Kreyol will come in handy as Josh plans to spend six months in Haiti, which will be a blessing for us and hopefully a grace-filled experience for Josh.

Cholera 17 – Tents and More Tents
Here is another taste of what it is like to provide cholera relief in remote Haiti.
Cholera patients come in all kinds. What they have in common is that they are sick with a terrible illness caused by an unrelenting organism – vibrio cholerae – that frequently causes significant diarrhea and vomiting, etc.
Not all patients become deathly ill though, and so we of SOS DRS have to be able to separate people from one another - those who are very sick from those who can be treated with oral solution, and then those who need to be evaluated and observed and treated only minimally.
And we also have to have a place to put supplies and medical staff who are helping the patients: you can’t stray too far from the cholera patients because they need constant care. Some need numerous bags of IV fluids every day and that means a process: starting an IV in a dehydrated patient; placing the bag; changing the bag; restarting the IV when access is lost, etc.
Part of my job as the coordinator of Project Perpetual Help Haiti is to make sure the patients and the staff have enough materials and the conditions to work. And I am doing that in strict collaboration with Theresia Sinaga who is the program director of our cholera relief efforts.
On January 10 Theresia, MarcDaly and I were in Port au Prince together. I had just returned from 10 days in Grand Anse. T and MD had been in PaP for only 3 days after spending 14 days in GA themselves. They are the ones who really got the cholera response going when we made a decision to respond to the epidemic in addition to our hurricane and earthquake relief efforts.
That was a decision that took them right before Christmas to Les Irois where for days they took care of patients and helped to deliver medications. Then there was an outbreak in Carcasse on December 26. A series of events took place that have helped us take care of hundreds of cholera patients who would have otherwise likely died. Of course we have been working together with locals, especially two nurses in Carcasse – Veronica and Vendredi – whose efforts have been close to heroic: working with cholera patients ia a 24-hour-job. And of course we have done all this together with Fr. Verdieu, a priest of the Diocese of Jeremie and the Pastor of St. Joseph’s Parish in Carcasse.
Collaboration is important. And recognizing one’s limitations is important as well. SOS DRS is a growing NGO that is part of the CTF network, and it is now working in a very difficult situation in remote Haiti. One thing we do not have access to is tents. And we cannot make them ourselves. And patients need to sleep and be treated somewhere. So when Therese, MarcDaly and I were together on 1/10 we went to the healthcare officer of a UN organization to ask for tents. It is usually this UN organization that provides tents in disaster situations.
And then I wrote a follow-up e-mail to reiterate our need. Here is that e-mail, which gives you a sense of what we are doing in GA and a taste of what it is like to provide relief in remote Haiti.

We met last night at the UN logistics base in PaP. I was with Therese and MarcDaly, two other members of SOS DRS (SOS Doctors). As I indicated SOS DRS is presently authorized to respond to the cholera epidemic in Grand Anse, which we have been doing since mid-December Right now we have 2 Cholera Treatment Centers – one is in Les Irois and one is in Carcasse. And we are preparing a mobile cholera unit because the number of cases is increasing and preparing for mobile medical work. Thus we need some help – specifically with tents.
As I mentioned last night, we could really benefit from 8 tents – 4 large tents [72 m] and 4 medium tents:
Here is how we think we will use the tents:
CTC – Les Irois:
1. Large Tent – [CTF - pt. care - ORS, less serious on IVF]
2. Medium Tent – more serious patients – IVF, etc.]
CTC – Carcasse:

Mobile Cholera [in case of another outbreak]

1. Large Tent – pt registration, evaluation, consultation, treatment, pharmacy area]

I did not mention this last night, but If by chance you have 20-24 gauge catheters for IV fluid administration, that would be great. We are in significant need.

En Chile se ha demonstrado que hoy, a 9 meses del terremoto, 20-22% de la población adulta (incluso en Santiago que no ha recibido daños estructurales) tiene esta sindrome cronicizada, que es fuente de ansiedad crónica, angustia, depresión, fobias, pánico, pesadillas, etc. peor es en el mundo infantil. Y todo esto se puede diagnosticar y prevenir o también curar. Esta fue la propuesta que en Chile fue escuchada y acogida con gran entusiasmo. El Dr. Vicari y Arigliani son nuestros expertos en presentar esto proyecto de investigación intervención.

On November 20, 2010 the Italian Episcopal Confernece approved the Pakistan Floord Relief Project submitted by CTF-SOS DRS through CTF Central.
The relief efforts until that point have been supported primarily by CTF Central, SOS DRS, the Philippine Province of the camillians and ProSA – an NGO of the Lombardo-Venetian Province of the Camillians located in Milan.
The Italian Episcopal Conference has supported CTF-SOS DRS projects in the Philippines (Typhoon Ketsana – Sept. 2009) and Haiti (Earthquake – January 2011). Manty thanks for their continued support.

The relief effort in Les Irois continues.
Therese, Marc Daly and Vickens are working together with Fr. Francien of Our Lady of Mercy Parish and nurses at the local hospital to help the 10-15 patients that are arriving every day with suspected cholera. They have all the telltale signs: dehydration and days of diarrhea. Some are even vomiting blood according to Therese’s reports – not a good sign. Anyway, she tells me that the three of them are working 10-hour-days, at least, providing: IV hydration, oral rehydration solution [ORS} and antibiotics - not to mention pastoral care for the dying and the living - and humanitarian support. But they are running low on medications and ORS.
Here is an interesting communication I had with Therese - via SKYPE, a brief dialogue that is one of the few that we have been able to have in the last 2 days because communication has been difficult: the CTF-SOS DRS mission is in a remote part of Haiti, and for communication we rely on a mobile internet device connected to the local phone grid.

Yes, you can see from Therese’s communication that the needs in Les Irois are great. She confirmed that for me when we spoke this morning – Dec. 23rd. I arrived in Port au Prince last night in the evening and am now preparing for a mission to Les Irois.
Thanks to several benefactors in Houston – especially my brother Todd [an SOS DRS board member] and a generous new friend of the organization named Mike Hanks - and some collaborators in Florida [Light of the World Charities], I was able to bring some medical supplies into Haiti last night. That is actually no small accomplishment given the difficulty of getting items through customs, etc.
I will look to take the items to Les Irois on December 25 when I go there with 2 members of CTF-SOS DRS – Vickens [who just returned to PaP today], and Wesbee, the newest member of the community who I first worked with in Goniaves, Haiti in 2004 when Hurricane Jeanne devastated that city.
The supplies include items from our inventory in PaP and two duffle bags weighing 70 lbs each with: portable cots - 10; IV tubing - 60; 2×2 guaze - 2 pkgs; alcohol wipes - 1000 each; IV extension tubing- 25; nonsterile gloves - 200; Cipro 500 mg - 1,500 tabs; large bottles children’s tylenol - 6; Nacl IV bags 100cc - 60; IV -cathlons #18 - 250; Amoxicillin liq child susp - 27; Lomotil - 25; cipro IV -10 bottles; Tylenol Adult - boxes.
The patients that we treat in Les Irois are young and old – and some come in pairs. Below are pictures of a couple we treated. She came with diarrhea and dehydration and was very sick. And of course that put her little child at serious risk: madamn is pregnant.
