Novena in Honor of the Immaculate Conception

Starting November 30 and ending December 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception

The Immaculate Conception-Our Lady of Lourdes

First, recite the Prayer to the Immaculate Conception.

PRAYER TO THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

O God, who by the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

did prepare a worthy dwelling place for Your Son,

we beseech You that, as by the foreseen death of this, Your Son,

You did preserve Her from all stain, so too You would permit us, purified through Her intercession, to come unto You. Through the same Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end. Amen.

Second, recite the appropriate prayer of each of the 9 days…

DAY ONE – O most Holy Virgin, who was pleasing to the Lord and became His mother,

immaculate in body and spirit, in faith and in love,

look kindly on me as I implore your powerful intercession. O most Holy Mother,

who by your blessed Immaculate Conception, from the first moment of your conception

did crush the head of the enemy, receive our prayers as we implore you

to present at the throne of God the favor we now request. (State your intention here)

O Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Mother of Christ,

you had influence with your Divine Son while upon this earth; you have the same influence now in heaven. Pray for us and obtain from him the granting of my petition if it be the Divine Will. Amen.

DAY TWO – O Mary, ever blessed Virgin, Mother of God, Queen of angels and of saints,

we salute you with the most profound veneration and filial devotion as we contemplate your holy Immaculate Conception. We thank you for your maternal protection and for the many blessings that we have received through your wondrous mercy and most powerful intercession. In all our necessities we have recourse to you with unbounded confidence.

O Mother of Mercy, we beseech you now to hear our prayer and to obtain for us of your Divine Son the favor that we so earnestly request in this novena… (State your intention)

O Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Mother of Christ, you had influence with your Divine Son while upon this earth; you have the same influence now in heaven.

Pray for us and obtain from him the granting of my petition if it be the Divine Will. Amen.

DAY THREE – O Blessed Virgin Mary, glory of the Christian people, joy of the universal Church

and Mother of Our Lord, speak for us to the Heart of Jesus, who is your Son and our brother.

O Mary, who by your holy Immaculate Conception did enter the world free from stain,

in your mercy obtain for us from Jesus the special favor which we now so earnestly seek… (State intention)

O Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Mother of Christ, you had influence with your Divine Son while upon this earth; you have the same influence now in heaven. Pray for us and obtain for us from him the granting of my petition if it be the Divine Will. Amen.

DAY FOUR – O Mary, Mother of God, endowed in your glorious Immaculate Conception with the fullness of grace; unique among women in that you are both mother and virgin;

Mother of Christ and Virgin of Christ, we ask you to look down with a tender heart from your throne and listen to our prayers as we earnestly ask that you obtain for us the favor for which we now plead(State intention)

O Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Mother of Christ, you had influence with your Divine Son while upon this earth; you have the same influence now in heaven. Pray for us and obtain for us from him the granting of my petition if it be the Divine Will. Amen.

DAY FIVE – O Lord, who, by the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, did prepare a fitting dwelling for your Son, we beseech you that as by the foreseen death of your Son, you did preserve her from all stain of sin, grant that through her intercession, we may be favored with the granting of the grace that we seek for at this time. (State intention)

O Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Mother of Christ, you had influence with your Divine Son while upon this earth; you have the same influence now in heaven. Pray for us and obtain for us from him the granting of my petition if it be the Divine Will. Amen.

DAY SIX – Glorious and immortal Queen of Heaven, we profess our firm belief in your Immaculate Conception preordained for you in the merits of your Divine Son. We rejoice with you in your Immaculate Conception. To the one ever-reigning God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, three in one Person,

one in nature, we offer thanks for your blessed Immaculate Conception. O Mother of the Word made Flesh, listen to our petition as we ask this special grace during this novena. (State intention).

DAY SEVEN – O Immaculate Virgin, Mother of God, and my mother, from the sublime heights of your dignity turn your merciful eyes upon me while I, full of confidence in your bounty and keeping in mind your Immaculate conception and fully conscious of your power, beg of you to come to our aid

and ask your Divine Son to grant the favour we earnestly seek in this novena, if it be beneficial for our immortal souls and the souls for whom we pray. Amen. (State intention here)

the granting of my petition if it be the Divine Will. Amen.

DAY NINE – O Mother of the King of the Universe, most perfect member of the human race,

“our tainted nature’s solitary boast,” we turn to you as mother, advocate, and mediatrix. O Holy Mary,

assist us in our present necessity. By your Immaculate Conception, O Mary conceived without sin,

we humbly beseech you from the bottom of our heart to intercede for us with your Divine Son

and ask that we be granted the favor for which we now plead… (State intention here…)

Pakistan 21 – Medical Camp – Day 4

Posted on January 31, 2011. Filed under: All Posts, Pakistan |

Dear Confreres,

Today, Dec 11, 2010, is the 4th day we have been working at the medical camps; the fatigued medical personnel and volunteers are beginning to feel the effects of long hours of hard work, exposure to dust,  and harsh weather conditions.

When we first arrived in the area, we were guided to a village in the heart of the barren wilderness.  The surrounding land is infertile and inhospitable, empty  other than a few rocks scattered here and there. The people in the nearby public building have lost their homes to the floods. Surprisingly, the community is well-populated, despite the inhumane living conditions.

We met with Mr. Mamtaz, the President of the Roshni Development Organization (RDO), who explained to us how the people in the area had been abandoned by the NGOs and political parties. Under the direction of Mr. Stanley David, member of the RDO and our collaborator, we set up a medical camp.  Our efforts were received with gratitude by Mr. Mamtaz, Mr. Stanley, and the approximately two hundred patients who were treated. Many people notice the banner on our van advertising free medical care, which gives them  somewhat of an idea of who we are and of the services we provide.

Shortly after our arrival, we were greeted by a woman who told us that she was not producing milk for her infant child.  It dawned on us that we had neglected to bring Lactogin with us. We noticed that several of the other newborns appeared malnourished, weak and fragile; the nursing mothers, too, appeared to be emaciated. We realized the necessity of stocking the requested item. We made arrangements to acquire Lactogin immediately in a quantity sufficient to supply all the needs of children under six months of age.

The population appears satisfied with the quality of our supplies.  The people particularly appreciated our stock of medications such as Panadol (acetaminophen) for pain, Lactogin for the infants and their mothers, and other medicines such as  cough syrup, tablets for fever, etc. The inhabitants of the village compare the quality of our services with those of the other NGOs and Government health facilities. They like our work and appreciate our genuine desire to serve, which flows from the heart of St. Camillus. Our presence has been a source of hope and joy for these people, who have been experiencing abandonment.

The mothers were delighted when we photographed their children.  Many mothers approached me and requested that I take the pictures of their children. They were very glad for this simple joy. It brought smiles to their faces, which were once withered, seemingly hopeless. The spirit of St. Camillus continues touching the lives of  many through the people of good will who bring the “Good News” of health and salvation!

Our presence in the desolate area, the availability of medications and sustenance, has brought new hope to the desolate situation.  The people have seemed to gain new life.  Their apathy has  been replaced by faith and positive energy.  They rejoice although they are surrounded by desolate wilderness.

Perhaps Isaiah includes these people when he said: “The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom…” (Is 35:1).

Update

Chile – Phase 1 of Project Humanization Earthquake in Chile comes to an end in December 2010.

Since February 27, 2010, the day of the earthquake, CTF Chile has served many victims with the support of CTF Central, SOS DRS and the Italian Episcopal Conference.  In conjunction with the Diocese of Linares, the Camillian Delegation in Chile, the two Camillian female congregations in Chile  (the Daughters of Saint Camillus and the Ministers of the Sick,) and  Misericordiae (Italy), we have provided the following benefits to the affected populations:

1.  Humanitarian Assistance to 5000 families in Parral:

  • Provided food, clothing, hygiene kits.
  • Paid for the construction of 11 houses;

2.  Pastoral Assistance:

  • Trained 30 counselors
  • Visited patients and staff at the hospitals in Parral and Cauquenes
  • Provided intense individual counseling to approximately 300 people.  Services were performed by counselors from the Center for Humanization in Madrid.

3.  Medical Assistance

  • Established mobile medical care  to include the delivery of medications and transportation of patients to the hospital
  • Provided 2 prefabricated modules:

1.  Parral: A pediatric facility with 20 beds MOL, an isolation room, and a neonatal section

2.  Cauquenes:  Provided hospital with an adult facility with some 20 beds

CTF Chile has provided these facilities to the hospitals in Parral and Cauquenes for a predetermined time period. Together, the two structures will provide for the care of 4,000 patients over the next year.

CTF-SOS DRS is looking to exand its efforts in Chile.  During my recent visit (Nov. 18-24, 2010,) I learned that a number of adults and children continue to suffer emotional trauma 9 months after the February earthquake.

CTF-SOS DRS will implement the following strategies on behalf of the traumatized population:

  • CTF-SOS DRS will conduct a scientific study to examine the psychological effects of the earthquake on the population.
  • CTF-SOS DRS will sponsor a pastoral formation program specific to the needs of the affected population

Please help us as we help those Chileans still traumatized by the earthquake

Cholera 18 – Josh reporting from the Field

Posted on January 16, 2011. Filed under: 2010 10 Haiti Cholera Epidemic, All Posts, CTF - A Community, CTF Network, CTF-USA (SOS DRS), Disaster Response, Ministry |

SOS DRS and Cholera -   Cholera 1-18

Josh Kent, a university student from New York, who heard about the work of SOS DRS when I was making a fundraising appeal in Syracuse, New York last summer at St. Ann’s Parish, is our newest volunteer in Haiti.

Josh actually came primarily to teach English to Haitians and foreign volunteers and to integrate in to our community in Port au Prince. But because i wanted him to have a taste of the mission before beginning his work as an ESL teacher, i sent him to Grand Anse to help with the cholera work – almost immediately after his arrival. Josh went with our other new volunteer, Dr. Ed Glavey – a critical care surgeon from Florida. More about Dr. Ed later.

Josh has become an important part of the team  assisting Dr. Ed with cholera care; helping SO DRS maintain its inventory; sending reports from the field; helping with other logistics issues. And he has even shown a desire to learn Kreyol, something which makes me happy. It is a beautiful language, and Kreyol will come in handy as Josh plans to spend six months in Haiti, which will be a blessing for us and hopefully a grace-filled experience for Josh.

Here is a brief report and some pictures sent by Josh.

Father Scott,

I updated the inventory document so we can better assess our needs here in Carcasse.  Vickens and Theresia left at about 2:00pm in order to go to Jeremie to pick up some items that we are in dire need of (IE: LR), and they should be back at some point tonight.
We’ve been busy the past two days updating the Cholera Treatment Center.  We’ve assembled two of the tents that Theresia et al. brought from PaP.  We transferred all of our supplies into one of them as well as a couple of cots for sleeping.  The other tent is being used to house the sickest patients instead of the old tent that was being used. That has now been destroyed.
There are currently 8 patients. I do not have exact ages but the youngest is 4; 3 are between 20-30; 3 are between 30-45′ the oldest is about 70.  I’ve attempted to upload pictures multiple times but they won’t attach. I’ll try again later.

I tried to send this yesterday but the internet went down despite there being power. Apparently the message or the pictures exceeded the bandwidth or something like that.
We went to Hospital Ewa today, and we are planning on setting up our third tent there after the area where it is going to be is flattened.

Cholera 17 – Tents and More Tents

Posted on January 15, 2011. Filed under: 2010 10 Haiti Cholera Epidemic, All Posts, CTF - A Community, CTF Network, English, Ministry |

Here is another taste of what it is  like to provide cholera relief in remote Haiti.

Cholera patients come in all kinds. What they have in common is that they are sick with a terrible illness caused by an unrelenting organism – vibrio cholerae – that frequently causes significant diarrhea and vomiting, etc.

Not all patients become deathly ill though, and so we of SOS DRS have to be able to separate people from one another - those who are very sick from those who can be treated with oral solution, and then those who need to be evaluated and observed and treated only minimally.

And we also have to have a place to put supplies and medical staff who are helping the patients: you can’t stray too far from the cholera patients because they need constant care. Some need numerous bags of IV fluids every day and that means a process: starting an IV in a dehydrated patient; placing the bag; changing the bag; restarting the IV when access is lost, etc.

Part of my job as the coordinator of Project Perpetual Help Haiti is to make sure the patients and the staff have enough materials and the conditions to work. And I am doing that in strict collaboration with Theresia Sinaga who is the program director of our cholera relief efforts.

On January 10  Theresia, MarcDaly and I were in Port au Prince together. I had just returned from 10 days in Grand Anse. T and MD had been in PaP for only 3 days after spending 14 days in GA themselves. They are the ones who really got the cholera response going when we made a decision to respond to the epidemic in addition to our hurricane and earthquake relief efforts.

That was a decision that took them right before Christmas to Les Irois where for days they took care of patients and helped to deliver medications. Then there was an outbreak in Carcasse on December 26. A series of events took place that have helped us take care of hundreds of cholera patients who would have otherwise likely died. Of course we have been working together with locals, especially two nurses in Carcasse – Veronica and Vendredi – whose efforts have been close to heroic: working with cholera patients ia a 24-hour-job. And of course we have done all this together with Fr. Verdieu, a priest of the Diocese of Jeremie and the Pastor of St. Joseph’s Parish in Carcasse.

Collaboration is important. And recognizing one’s limitations is important as well. SOS DRS  is a growing NGO that is part of the CTF network, and it is now working in a very difficult situation in remote Haiti. One thing we do not have access to is tents. And we cannot make them ourselves. And patients need to sleep and be treated somewhere. So when Therese, MarcDaly and I were together on 1/10 we went to the healthcare officer of a UN organization to ask for tents. It is usually this UN organization that provides tents in disaster situations.

And then I wrote a follow-up e-mail to reiterate our need. Here is that e-mail, which gives you a sense of what we are doing in GA and a taste of what it is  like to provide relief in remote Haiti.

Subject: Tents for Cholera Treatment Centers in Grand Anse – (SOS Doctors) – Fr. Scott Binet
Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2011 18:27:49 +0100

Dear C,

Health and peace to you.

We met last night at the UN logistics base in PaP. I was with Therese and MarcDaly, two other members of SOS DRS (SOS Doctors). As I indicated SOS DRS is presently authorized to respond to the cholera epidemic in Grand Anse, which we have been doing since mid-December Right now we have 2 Cholera Treatment Centers – one is in Les Irois and one is in Carcasse. And we are preparing a mobile cholera unit because the number of cases is increasing and preparing for mobile medical work. Thus we need some help – specifically with tents.

As I mentioned last night, we could really benefit from 8 tents – 4 large tents [72 m] and 4 medium tents:

Here is how we think we will use the tents:

CTC – Les Irois:
1. Large Tent – [CTF - pt. care - ORS, less serious on IVF]
2. Medium Tent – more serious patients – IVF, etc.]

CTC – Carcasse:
1. Medium Tent – more serious patients – IVF, etc.]

Mobile Cholera [in case of another outbreak]
1. Large Tent – [CTF - pt. care - ORS, less serious on IVF]
2. Medium Tent – more serious patients – IVF, etc.]

Mobile Medical [to underserved areas]
1. Large Tent – pt registration, evaluation, consultation, treatment, pharmacy area]
2. Medium Tent – for patients who need to be treated and then observed while supine – IVF, some storage
3. Large tent – for the team – personal items, sleeping, supplies

I did not mention this last night, but If by chance you have 20-24 gauge catheters for IV fluid administration, that would be great. We are in significant need.

My telephone number is 3858-4909. I can be reached via e-mail as well. Theresia and Mark will pick up the supplies. Her number is 3858-4904.
Father Scott F. Binet, MD, MI

We will see what the response is. Stay tuned.

Dear Confreres,

 A Visit to Jati, Sajawal
After several consultations, meetings and coordinations, finally on 29 Nov. 2010, Fr. Sabir Sadiq (local of Jati), Fr. David Mughal, OFM, Imran, Aqeel Emmanuel (OFM youth members and volunteers) and I started our journey at 6:30 AM. It was a long journey of around about 5 hours to reach there;
There we saw tents pitched here and there especially on the bank of River Indus.
Rehabilitation work continues. Water is still there in many places.
In Jati, we visited several communities (gott-villages). They are all Christians. We saw houses were broken; some totally destroyed; and others damaged. These people own their lands. Their crops were totally washed away. Nothing is seen; some fields you can see only some grass; others still submerged under water.
We had meeting with the people. We shared our purpose and listened to their stories and concerns. They lost everything. The little they salvaged and put on the roof tops, neighbouring people came and stole away. Nothing can be done. We inquired about their emergency and urgent  needs. All of them echoed: SHELTER. They were all happy that we went there.
So, we went ahead with our plan of doing measurements of their houses – one for each family. We were able to measure 17 houses.  It was getting dark and we had to stop our work. The rest we asked the local leaders to continue the following day.  All in all, there are 26 houses in Jati that we will support in providing shelter.
It is heartbreaking to see the whole family posing for a picture in their fields which they expected to earn much from. But now this nothing. It will take almost six more months that they can get the produce of their own land. They are helpless but not hopeless. They pick up the pieces and start rebuilding their lives.
In the families that we visited, they offered us tea, and cookies. They were very welcoming. They thank us Camillians and CTF in particular for remembering them in this difficult situation.
For the distribution, we cannot do in 1 day. We might take two or three days for the distribution because of the nature of their localities and long distances. These houses are scattered. They are located far from the main road and from each other. But with your prayers and grace of God, we will continue serving His people. We came back at around 11pm.
Let us continue praying for each other. God bless.

CTF-SOS DRS is looking to extend its work in Chile.  After my recent visit (Nov. 18-24, 2010) when I heard of the number of adults and children who are still traumatized by the earthquake, we have decided to sponsor pastoral formation programs in counseling and a scientific study to look at the psychological effects of the earthquake. Please help us as we help those Chileans still traumatized by the earthquake

p. Pietro Magliozzi, MI

The relief effort in Les Irois continues.

Therese, Marc Daly and Vickens are working together with Fr. Francien of Our Lady of Mercy Parish and nurses at the local hospital to help the 10-15 patients that are arriving every day with suspected cholera. They have all the telltale signs: dehydration and days of diarrhea. Some are even vomiting blood according to Therese’s reports – not a good sign. Anyway, she tells me that the three of them are working 10-hour-days, at least, providing:  IV hydration, oral rehydration solution [ORS} and antibiotics - not to mention pastoral care for the dying and the living - and humanitarian support. But they are running low on medications and ORS.

Here is an interesting communication I had with Therese - via SKYPE, a brief dialogue that is one of the few that we have been able to have in the last 2 days because communication has been difficult: the CTF-SOS DRS mission is in a remote part of Haiti, and for communication we rely on a mobile internet device connected to the local phone grid.

[12/21/2010 1:10:09 PM] Theresia Sinaga: Fr. S, are you there?
[12/21/2010 1:12:02 PM] Scott Binet: Yes. Hi Therese.
[12/21/2010 1:12:09 PM] Theresia Sinaga: HI
[12/21/2010 1:12:15 PM] Theresia Sinaga: How are you?
[12/21/2010 1:12:24 PM] Theresia Sinaga: I have been looking for you this morning
[12/21/2010 1:12:37 PM] Theresia Sinaga: Yes, I need some medicines
[12/21/2010 1:13:42 PM] Scott Binet: What do you need?
[12/21/2010 1:13:59 PM] Theresia Sinaga: I need more ORS
[12/21/2010 1:14:44 PM] Theresia Sinaga: Some antibiotics (doxycyline)
[12/21/2010 1:15:11 PM] Theresia Sinaga: and if Theresa Banks could provide tents it would be good for us
[12/21/2010 1:15:14 PM] Theresia Sinaga: do they have it
[12/21/2010 1:15:51 PM] Theresia Sinaga: At least we have 10-15 people per day who has problem with diarrhea and vomiting
[12/21/2010 1:16:07 PM] Theresia Sinaga: though we do not know exactly if they have cholera
[12/21/2010 1:16:17 PM] Theresia Sinaga: but we suspect them have cholera\
[12/21/2010 1:16:31 PM] Theresia Sinaga: I tried to get the cholera bed from the hospital
[12/21/2010 1:16:40 PM] Theresia Sinaga: because you could not buy it here
[12/21/2010 1:16:53 PM] Theresia Sinaga: one way to have it is by making it
[12/21/2010 1:17:06 PM] Theresia Sinaga: MD, V and I are thinking to make it
[12/21/2010 1:17:37 PM] Theresia Sinaga: the tents that I request it would be for cholera
[12/21/2010 1:18:03 PM] Theresia Sinaga: I would like to separate the people who are suspected cholera with anothet patients
[12/21/2010 1:18:59 PM] Theresia Sinaga: I am thinking to buy tents probably and some woods so we can set up the cholera place

Yes, you can see from Therese’s communication that the needs in Les Irois are great. She confirmed that for me when we spoke this morning – Dec. 23rd. I arrived in Port au Prince last night in the evening and am now preparing for a mission to Les Irois.

Thanks to several benefactors in Houston – especially my brother Todd [an SOS DRS board member] and a generous new friend of the organization named Mike Hanks - and some collaborators in Florida [Light of the World Charities], I was able to bring some medical supplies into Haiti last night. That is actually no small accomplishment given the difficulty of getting items through customs, etc.

I will look to take the items to Les Irois on December 25 when I go there with 2 members of CTF-SOS DRS – Vickens [who just returned to PaP today], and Wesbee, the newest member of the community who I first worked with in Goniaves, Haiti in 2004 when Hurricane Jeanne devastated that city.

The supplies include items from our inventory in PaP and two duffle bags weighing 70 lbs each with: portable cots - 10; IV tubing - 60; 2×2 guaze - 2 pkgs; alcohol wipes  - 1000 each; IV extension tubing- 25; nonsterile gloves - 200; Cipro 500 mg  - 1,500 tabs; large bottles children’s tylenol - 6; Nacl IV bags 100cc - 60; IV -cathlons  #18 - 250; Amoxicillin liq child susp   - 27; Lomotil -  25; cipro IV -10 bottles; Tylenol Adult -  boxes.

The patients that we treat in Les Irois are young and old – and some come in pairs. Below are pictures of a couple we treated. She came with diarrhea and dehydration and was very sick. And of course that put her little child at serious risk: madamn is pregnant.

Pakistan 13 – Mushtaq Sends an Update

Posted on January 4, 2011. Filed under: 2010 Pakistan Floods, All Posts, CTF - A Community, CTF Network, Disaster Response, English, Ministry |

After speaking with Mushtaq while Marco Iazzolino and I were in Chile, he writes us an update on how things are going in Pakistan. Let us keep him and the people he is serving in our prayers. Dear Fr. Scott and Marco,

Greetings of peace and good health.
Thank you for your call. It was/is an encouragement for me to talk with both of you and greet to our Chile confreres. It is true that all hands are full. My prayers, good wishes and solidarity with all of you. I really appreciate your efforts to connect with me even though we are thousands of miles away.

Fr. Aris keeps constant communcation with me. I am indeed thankful for his guidance and support for me. I am learning so much from him.

As I said, I am in my home town now. I traveled 18 hours by train to reach Okara. I am hoping to get a train ticket tomorrow even if it might be very expensive because of the Muslim feast; it was really rush. No seat available in bus or train. Many times they sell in black. It was terrible but I am glad I came back and will be able to settle bank account concerns.

I am getting some info regarding winter package and shelter material and about the construction work (water purifcation plant) in Khushpur. I/we are hoping to strike a good deal for winter package that could reach even much more than 50 families. I am very optimistic about it.

Once again. Thank you so much. Let us continue praying for each other.

Fraternally yours with love and prayers in Christ, St. Camillus and Mother Mary

Mushtaq
