Our Lady of Guadalupe
Our Lady of Guadalupe (December 12) Patron Saint of the Americas and the Unborn
A Look back and a Look Forward
Fr. Scott
Throughout the world today, December 12, we are celebrating the Third Sunday of Advent – known as “Gaudete Sunday”. Gaudete is Latin for Rejoice! Rejoice, the Lord is nigh. Yes, we are preparing for His arrival this Christmas and beyond. Maranatha!
Normally on December 12 in the US and elsewhere we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. She is the Patroness of the Americas and the Protectress of the Unborn. What a glorious day! This year we will celebrate it on December 13.
America – North, Central and South – is home to many man-made and natural disasters including fires, tornados, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, abortion and others. America is in need of protection especially its most vulnerable – the unborn.
Here is a post I wrote in 2009.
Members of SOS DRS have for some time cultivated a devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe. We have a beautiful image of her in the Divine Mercy chapel at the HQ that we obtained from the Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. We went there at the end of our 2008 Mission Cooperation Plan fundraising experience while on our way back from California. This last summer [2008] I was in Arizona for fundraising purposes, and I had the opportunity to attend the 1st International Marian Congress on Our Lady of Guadalupe that was sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. I have been a proud member of the Knights for some 25 years. The present Grand Knight, Carl Anderson, wrote an excellent book – Our Lady of Guadalupe – Mother of A Civilization of Love. I recommend it.
I pray the world mission rosary daily in which we often have recourse to the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Here is an intention from a recent WMR (October 26-November 8, 2009)
America (Red Beads)
Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Patron Saint of Mexico, where the swine flu started, may come to the aid of those affected in the US and elsewhere by this illness. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in America.
Disaster (Swine Flu – Ongoing) Map of Mexico Extract from Swine Flu – Number of Cases in World WASHINGTON (Reuters) – World health officials have given up trying to count how many people have the H1N1 swine flu virus, saying the best they can do is estimate the spread of the “unstoppable” virus. In June Dr. Anne Schuchat of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declined even to hazard a guess, saying it was “more than a million.” Why not? “Most people who have respiratory illnesses don’t find out exactly what caused it. Even most people with influenza don’t know exactly which type of influenza caused their illness.” In fact, swine flu is often suspected when a patient’s instant in-office flu test comes up unreadable. On Saturday October 24, Barack Obama declared the swine flu a national emergency in the US
Saint (Our Lady of Guadalupe) (Patron Saint of Mexico) Extract from Our Lady of Guadalupe (Feast Date: Dec. 12) Profile Our Lady of Guadalupe (Spanish: Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe) is a celebrated 16th-century icon of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ. The image, also known as the Virgin of Guadalupe represents a famous Marian apparition. According to the traditional account, the image appeared miraculously on the front of a simple peasant’s cloak. The image still exists; it is on display in the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City. See picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Per the instructions of the WMR, we end it every day with the following prayer to our Lady of Guadalupe. Please join us as we pray:
For Our Nation and World
O Virgin of Guadalupe, Your appearance in Mexico changed the course of human history. Human sacrifice ceased and millions were converted to Jesus Christ.
Pray for our world and nation now. Guide our elections through your gracious intercession. Change hearts and minds to uphold the dignity of all human life. Stem the tide of moral degeneration and defend the sanctity of marriage.
Protect our world and nation from terrorism, war and natural disaster. May goodness triumph over evil. May candidates committed to God’s truth be elected and re-elected.
And may our world and nation prosper, through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

December 12 – Saint Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe: Patron Saint of Mexico, the Americas, the Unborn and Against Abortion
Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patron Saint of Mexico (Feast Date: December 12)
Extract from Our Lady of Guadalupe: “Our Lady of Guadalupe (Spanish: Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe) is a celebrated 16th-century icon of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ. The image, also known as the Virgin of Guadalupe (Spanish: Virgen de Guadalupe) represents a famous Marian apparition. According to the traditional account, the image appeared miraculously on the front of a simple peasant’s cloak. The image still exists; it is on display in the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City. She is said to have appeared to Saint Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City between December 9 and December 12, 1531.” See picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patron Saint of the Unborn (Feast Date: December 12)
In 1531 a ‘Lady from Heaven’ appeared on a hill northwest of what is now Mexico City. She identified herself as the ever Virgin Mary, Mother of the True God. She made a request for a church to be built on the hill-site and submitted her wish to the local Bishop. When the Bishop hesitated and requested a sign from her, the Mother of God obeyed the local bishop without delay or question and sent her native messenger Juan Diego to the top of the hill in mid-December to gather an assortment of roses for the Bishop. Pope John Paul II entrusted the cause of life to her loving protection and placed under her motherly care the innocent lives of children, especially those who are in danger of not being born. See Picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
