I remember that day when the raiders came and forced me into slavery. The weather was fresh and sunny and it seemed like there was nothing to worry about. I saw their boats coming from off in the distance, but when they hit the shore, the Irish Raiders with their swords and armament was too much for my village to handle.
The Pagan raiders grabbed me and forced me into slavery in Ireland, away from my British homeland. My father was a deacon and my mother was related to St. Martin of Tours, but I was not very religious as a child.
The person who enslaved me made me tend his sheep herd. It was a very solitary life for six years and I grew closer to God as each day went by. The region was cold and mountainous; it rained or snowed most of the time. I would pray to God and take comfort in my Lord.
Then one night I heard a voice in my dream. It told me to depart for my home country and that a boat would be waiting for me. I fled 200 miles to a port and received passage on a boat back to Brittain.
I was on the boat for three days before reaching land with the boat’s crew. The land was uninhabited- abandoned after many raids. After 28 days of walking and looking for food, the ship’s crew was weak and starving. The captain asked, if my God was all powerful, why I didn’t pray for food for all? I told him if he truly believed, God would send food, and suddenly a herd of pigs appeared, and many pigs were slayed for all to eat.
We all ate well and regained our strength, even wild honey was found. The ships pagan crew sacrificed to their gods, but I did not partake.
One night Satan attacked me! Satan fell on me with the weight of a boulder, I could not move. I believe God protected me because at that moment, the sun appeared and the light released me from Satan’s grip.
After this I was reunited with my family in Brittain. While in Brittain I saw a vision. The spectacle of the vision, the bright light, the image of the man! His name was Victorious, and he came from Ireland with many letters. He gave me the one that read “The voice of the Irish.” At this time I could hear voices calling me–the voices called from Ireland.
I became a Priest and Bishop, then the Pope gave me my mission of reforming Ireland from its pagan ways.
When asking the Irish to convert to Christianity, I did not ask that the Irish give up their belief in the supernatural, but to think of the supernatural as demons, God being the one supreme power.
Sometimes I would have to give gifts or money as protection from harm to tribal chieftains for my missionary journeys; more often God would provide the protection for me.
I would try and connect with, and convert, the Tribal Chieftains first; this made it easier for me to convert the rest of the tribe. Sometimes the sons or daughters in the tribe would become Monks or Nuns. One of the Monks I converted was St. Benignus.
Ireland did not have towns at this time, so I would build churches after enough pagans would convert to warrant the construction. Then I would anoint one as Pastor and instruct him in the doctrine and rules of the Church.
In my confession or autobiography I thanked God for keeping me thankful and faithful.
I also wrote to the soldiers of Coroticus after they took many of my converts slaves. I threatened to excomunicate them if they would not let God’s disciples go. The slave trade in Ireland was abolished.
I would like to be known as one of the first great missionaries to bring the gospel beyond the boundaries of Roman Civilization. It is a legacy to be proud of.
