April 29 – Saint Catherine of Siena: Patron Saint of the Sick, of Nurses, of Europe, Italy, against Fire, Floods and Temptation

Saint Catherine of Siena, Patron Saint against Fire (Feast Date:  April 29)

Extract from St Catherine of Siena: “St Catherine of Siena is The Seraphic Virgin, Mystic of the Incarnate Word, and Mystic of the Mystical Body of Christ. She is a Doctor of Unity for the church because of her wise and tremendous feat in advising the Pope to return to Rome. Her courage, holiness and cooperation with God’s spirit is a marvelous prototype hardly matched in church history. She was not a nun but certainly belonged and dedicated to the Dominicans as a papal counselor, in a lay apostolic role, and a stigmatist. Both, the secular and religious, watched and admired her virtue carefully. The Holy Father eagerly sought her advice, and the pope listened to her attentively. Through her efforts the papacy retuned to Rome after almost a century in France.” See PICTURE of St. Catherine of Siena. Extract from The Story of our Patron: “The mystical communion that was at the heart of St. Catherine’s spirituality inspired her to reach out to the poor and suffering of Siena. When the Black Death swept through her city, she had no hesitation in caring for the victims. She worked as a nurse. She dug graves for those who died of the plague and then buried them properly herself. She accompanied prisoners who were condemned to death to the place of execution waiting with them and praying for them to the end. . . .  Catherine ranks high among the mystics and spiritual writers of the Church. In 1970 Paul VI named her and Teresa of Avila as doctors of the Church. In recent years, it has been suggested that she (among other possibilities) should be named patron of the Internet. Her spiritual testament is found in The Dialogue.” See PICTURE of Saint Catherine of Siena. Saint Catherine of Siena, Patron Saint of Italy, against Fire (Feast Date: April 29)

Extract from: St. Catherine of Siena: “From her earliest childhood Catherine began to see visions and to practise extreme austerities. At the age of seven she consecrated her virginity to Christ; in her sixteenth year she took the habit of the Dominican Tertiaries, and renewed the life of the anchorites of the desert in a little room in her father’s house. After three years of celestial visitations and familiar conversation with Christ, she underwent the mystical experience known as the “spiritual espousals”, probably during the carnival of 1366. She now rejoined her family, began to tend the sick, especially those afflicted with the most repulsive diseases, to serve the poor, and to labour for the conversion of sinners. Though always suffering terrible physical pain, living for long intervals on practically no food save the Blessed Sacrament, she was ever radiantly happy and full of practical wisdom no less than the highest spiritual insight. All her contemporaries bear witness to her extraordinary personal charm, which prevailed over the continual persecution to which she was subjected even by the friars of her own order and by her sisters in religion. She began to gather disciples round her, both men and women, who formed a wonderful spiritual fellowship, united to her by the bonds of mystical love.” See also: Catherine of Siena (Multilingual), SAINT CATHERINE OF SIENA VIRGIN (d. 1380) (EN), Catalina de Siena Virgen y doctora de la iglesia (SP), Santa Catarina da Siena (IT), Catherine de Sienne (FR), Katarzyna ze Sieny (PO).
