July 14, July 18, May 25 (Birthday) – Saint Camillus de Lellis: Patron Saint of those who are Sick, Hospitals, Hospital Workers, Nurses and Physicians

Saint Camillus de Lellis, Patron Saint of those who are Sick (Feast Dates: July 14, July 18)

Extract from Saint Camillus de Lellis: “Saint Camillus de Lellis’ life is the story of a belligerent, self-centered youth who thought he could take on the world, but he could not break from his addictions. His story shows how the habit of sin had dragged him to the very dregs of society…and would have plunded him straight into Hell if he had not found the strength to pull himself out by grabbing hold of the crimson Pillar of Salvation. For it was the Cross, and the pitiful Figure nailed to it that finally broke through the darkness and shone its light of love and mercy into that sea of addiction and misery, drawing the soul of Camillus de Lellis to safety. It was at the foot of the Cross where he found a forgiveness so complete and a grace so powerful that it lifted him from the grasp of Satan and set him on the road to sanctity. And it was the Cross that gave him the stamina to persevere in a great, but difficult, mission until his dying day.” See PICTURES of Saint Camillus de Lellis. See also: St. Camillus de Lellis, ST. Saint Camillus de Lellis, Patron Saint of those who are Sick (Feast Dates: July 14, July 18)

Extract from St. Camillus de Lellis, Founder and Patron:  “He skipped school.  Gambled.  Fought. Born to lose?  Far from it.  Born to serve his brothers and sisters through his later dedication to the sick and the dying.  Camillus de Lellis was canonized in 1746 and later declared patron saint of the sick, nurses and of hospitals.   His life marked a turning point in medical care as we know it today.  It also marked the beginning of a brotherhood that now spans the world and provides leadership in healthcare through Christian charity and love.  Here is the following story of Camillus …the man…the saint…and the Order. On May 25, 1550, Camilla Compelli de Laureto – at almost sixty years of age – gave birth to Camillus de Lellis in Bucchianico, Italy.  Camillus was welcomed with great joy, also with much anxiety, for his birth was preceded by a strange dream that profoundly disturbed his mother. . . . Camillus chose a red cross as the distinguishing badge for the members of his Order to wear upon their black cassocks, and he taught his volunteers that the hospital was a house of God, a garden where the voices of the sick were music from heaven.  Once when he was discouraged, he heard the consoling words from the crucifix, ‘This is my work, not yours’. . . . After leading the movement throughout Italy, Camillus died on July 14, 1614.  In 1742, Pope Benedict XIV proclaimed Camillus de Lellis blessed; in 1746 he canonized him, calling him the ‘Founder of a new school of charity’. This new school saw the sick in a new light.  In Camillus’ own words, ‘The poor and the sick are the heart of God.  In serving them, we serve Jesus the Christ’.” See PICTURE of Saint Camillus de Lellis.   See also: Camillus de Lellis (Multilingual),  St. Camillus de Lellis Information (EN), Vida y milagros de San Camilo de Lelis (SP), San Camilo de Lelis Lellis (SP), La Vita di San Camillo de Lellis (IT), Saint Camille de Lellis (FR), Święty Kamil de Lellis, prezbiter i zakonnik (PO), Patron – Św. Saint Camillus de Lellis,Patron Saint of the Sick (Feast Date: July 18 – US; July 14 – Universal) (b. May 25, 1550; d. July 14, 1614)

Extract from Saint Camillus: “St. Camillus de Lellis was born in Bucchianico, Italy. He fought for the Venetians against the Turks, was addicted to gambling, and by 1574 was penniless in Naples. He became a Capuchin novice, but was unable to be professed because of a diseased leg he contracted while fighting the Turks. He devoted himself to caring for the sick, and became director of St. Giacomo Hospital in Rome. He received permission from his confessor (St. Philip Neri) to be ordained and decided, with two companions, to found his own congregation, the Ministers of the Sick (the Camillians), dedicated to the care of the sick. They ministered to the sick of Holy Ghost Hospital in Rome, enlarged their facilities in 1585, founded a new house in Naples in 1588, and attended the plague-stricken aboard ships in Rome’s harbor and in Rome. In 1591, the Congregation was made into an order to serve the sick by Pope Gregory XIV, and in 1591 and 1605, Camillus sent members of his order to minister to wounded troops in Hungary and Croatia, the first field medical unit. Gravely ill for many years, he resigned as superior of the Order in 1607 and died in Rome on July 14, the year after he attended a general chapter there. He was canonized in 1746, was declared patron of the sick, with St. John of God, by Pope Leo XIII, and patron of nurses and nursing groups by Pope Pius XI. His feast day is July 18th in the US. ”  See picture of Saint Camillus

Saint Camillus De Lellis, Patron of the Sick (Feast Date: July 14th) (b. May 25, 1550; d. July 14, 1614)

Extract from Saint Camillus:  “Camillus spent his youth as a soldier. A gambling addict, he lost so much in the army that he left and took a job with the Capuchins; He had a conversion experience in 1575. Camillus entered the Capuchin novitiate three times, but a nagging leg injury, received while fighting the Turks, each time forced him to give up. Camillus went to Rome for medical treatment where Saint Philip Neri became his priest and confessor. At the age of 32 in order to become a priest, he began to study with people much younger than he. Camillus founded the Servants of the Sick (the Camillians). Camillus honored the sick as living images of Christ and hoped that the service he gave them did penance for his wayward youth. He was reported to have the gifts of miraculous healing and prophecy. “
