His body, battered almost beyond recognition by the force of the mudslide that swept through their village on Tuesday, lay in a simple wooden coffin. . . . The rest are missing, presumed dead.” See also: UGANDA: After landslides in the east, now flooding, and Rescuers refuse to give up hope in Uganda.
Saint Sunniva (Patron Saint of Norway, buried by a landslide) (Memorial: July 8).Extract from Saint Sunniva: “Daughter of a tenth century Irish king. To avoid an arranged marriage with an invading pagan king, she, her brother Alban, and several female companions fled her home only to settle in a cave on the island of Selje, off the Norwegian coast. Sometime later, Viking locals decided that the group was stealing cattle, and sent an armed band to attack them. When they arrived, they found the cave sealed by a landslide; none of the group of exiles was ever seen alive again. Years later, around 995, after reports of strange lights in the area, King Olaf Tryggvason had the cave opened; Sunniva’s body was found incorrupt, and the king built a church there in her honour.” See picture of Saint Sunniva.See video: Gloria.tv: Monastery of Saint Sunniva, Nordfjord, Norway.

Saint Anne Patron Saint of France(Feast Date: July 26). Extract from Saint Anne: “Mother of Our Lady. Grandmother of Jesus Christ. Wife of Saint Joachim. Probably well off. Tradition says that Anne was quite elderly when Mary was born, and that she was their only child. The belief that Anne remained a virgin in the conception and birth of Mary was condemned by the Vatican in 1677. Believed to have given Mary to the service of the Temple when the girl was three years old. Devotion to her has been popular in the East from the very early days of the Church; widespread devotion in the West began in the 16th century, but many shrines have developed since. Walls twisted and split above him. The earth beneath rocked so crazily that he could not move his feet. Then an avalanche of crumbled masonry buried him to the neck. When he was dug out, his brothers were dead—and in the shock and fright of his own eyes was the measure of Chile’s disaster.” See alsoQuake, tsunamis kill more than 700 in Chile and Chile Earthquake Videos.
Saint Mary, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (Patron Saint of Chile) (Feast Day: July 16 [June 16 in Basque Country.]) Extract from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. “St. Teresa of Avila (October 15) called Carmel “the Order of the Virgin.” St. John of the Cross (December 14) credited Mary with saving him from drowning as a child, leading him to Carmel and helping him escape from prison. St. Theresa of the Child Jesus believed that Mary cured her from illness. On her First Communion, she dedicated her life to Mary. During the last days of her life she frequently spoke of Mary. There is a tradition (which may not be historical) that Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock, a leader of the Carmelites, and gave him a scapular, telling him to promote devotion to it. The scapular is a modified version of Mary’s own garment. It symbolizes her special protection and calls the wearers to consecrate themselves to her in a special way. The scapular reminds us of the gospel call to prayer and penance—a call that Mary models in a splendid way.” See picture of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, St. Mary, Our Lady of Mt.
