Saint Matthew the Apostle (Patron Saint of Security Guards) (Feast Date:  September 21) Extract from St. Matthew the Apostle:Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist, also called Levi, was sitting at his tax-collector’s desk in Capernaum when he was called by Christ. He followed Him at once, and also gave a feast for Him and the other disciples. After the resurrection of Christ, while Matthew was still in Judea before going to the district which it had fallen to his lot to evangelize, he wrote the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Hebrew for the sake of the Jews who had become believers. Then he went to Ethiopia and preached the Gospel, confirming his teaching with many miracles.  By one of his greatest miracles, that of bringing back to life the king’s daughter, he converted the king and his wife together with the whole country to the faith of Christ. . . . ” See picture of Saint Matthew, videos: St. Matthew the ApostleSaint Matthew the Evangelist, Apostle (September 21), and Prayers to St. Matthew.

He also converted many to Christianity. He was made a bishop by Pope Marcellus I (or Pope Marcellinus), and sent to Ascoli Piceno. Saint (Genevieve) (Patron Saint of Disasters) (Feastday:  January 3) Extract from Saint Genevieve:”Genevieve, like so many others who wished to practice religious virtue, remained at home, leading an innocent, prayerful life. It is uncertain when she formally received the religious veil. …. She devoted herself to works of charity and practiced severe corporal austerities, abstaining completely from flesh meat and breaking her fast only twice in the week. . . . Like Blessed Joan of Arc, in later times, she had frequent communion with the other world, but her visions and prophecies were treated as frauds and deceits. Her enemies conspired to drown her; but, through the intervention of Germain of Auxerre, their animosity was finally overcome. The bishop of the city appointed her to look after the welfare of the virgins dedicated to God, and by her instruction and example she led them to a high degree of sanctity.” See picture of Saint Genevieve, Prayer to St. Genevieve, Prayers to St. Genevieve and video: Saint Genevieve (January 3).

Residents from the region shared tales of tragedy and survival on Saturday evening. . . .Dale Thrasher was inside Yazoo City’s Hillcrest Baptist Church when it was flattened by the tornado. ‘I went in the sanctuary and got under the pulpit table and the whole building fell around me,’ he said.  His injuries: ‘three little scratches.’  . . . Rob and Ashley Saxton were driving to a Yazoo City restaurant owned by Rob’s father — planning to take shelter in the restaurant’s walk-in freezer ahead of the tornado — when the twister blew out the car’s windows at a red light. The car was tossed across the intersection, then picked up again and flung into the restaurant. . . .In all, 12 counties were reporting injuries, with some of the injured airlifted to a Level 1 trauma center at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, said Jeff Rent, a MEMA spokesman. The hospital has 27 patients with injuries sustained in the tornado, including eight adults in critical condition and six children in serious condition, according to spokesman Jim Albritton. . . .”  See also:  10 kills as tornado tears through Mississippiand videos:Tornado survivors tell their storiesEmergency Official: 10 Killed by Miss. Saint Vitus (Patron Saint against Storms) (Feast Date: June 15) Extract from Saint Vitus: “Legend says that Vitus was the son of a pagan Sicilian senator named Hylas. The boy was converted to Christianity at age twelve by his tutor, Saint Modestus, and his nurse Saint Crescentia. His father showed his objection to the conversion by having all three arrested and scourged.  Freed from prison by angels, they fled to Lucania, then Rome. There Vitus freed the son of Emperor Diocletian from an evil spirit. When Vitus would not sacrifice to the pagan gods in celebration, his cure was attributed to sorcery, and he and his household were arrested again. Tortured, and condemned to death, they were thrown to the lions; the lions would not touch them, so they were thrown into boiling oil. At the moment of their deaths, a immense storm destroyed several pagan temples in the region, which led to the tradition of protection against stormy weather. . . . “See picture of Saint Vitus and  Prayer to St. Vitus.

Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque (Patron Saint of Polio Victims) (Feast Date:  October 16) Extract from Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque:  “From the time she was twenty, she experienced visions of Christ, and on December 27, 1673, she began a series of revelations that were to continue over the next year and a half. In them Christ informed her that she was His chosen instrument to spread devotion to His Sacred Heart, instructed her in a devotion that was to become known as the Nine Fridays and the Holy Hour, and asked that the feast of the Sacred Heart be established. Rebuffed by her superior, Mother de Saumaise, in her efforts to follow the instruction she had received in the visions, she eventually won her over but was unable to convince a group of theologians of the validity of her apparitions, nor was she any more successful with many of the members of her community. She received the support of Blessed Claude La Colombiere, the community’s confessor for a time, who declared that the visions were genuine”  See picture of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque.
