So far, two people have been reported to have died due to the floods. “Our only way of communicating now is via VHF radio.”. . . Saint Mary, Our Lady of Zapopan (Patron Saint against Floods) (Feast Date: October 5) Extract from:. Our Lady of Zapopan Shrine: “Our Lady of Zapopan has been venerated fervently not only in Zapopan, but throughout the entire State of Jalisco. Countless miracles have continued to happen. People used to transport her to Guadalajara whenever this large city–now the second largest in Mexico–was in danger, as in 1721, in order to protect the city from plague. In 1734, she was proclaimed Patroness against storms and lightning. Even now, the statue stays in Guadalajara from June 13 to October 5. After Mexico became independent in 1821, the Virgin of Zapopan was proclaimed Patroness of the State of Jalisco and its army. The current shrine (the first ones were adobe constructions) was inaugurated by the bishop of Guadalajara on Sept. 8, 1730. Debris is still covering some far south coast roads after the storm and the Princes Highway remains closed in a number of locations. The State Emergency Service received 257 calls for assistance throughout the weekend, but only a small number of calls overnight. Saint Francis Xavier (Patron Saint of Australia) (Feast Date: December 3) Extract from Saint Francis Xavier (1506-1552). “. . . though he might accept the external circumstances of life as he knew it, he preserved an absolute detachment of heart. He deliberately chose to live in the most complete poverty and refused to accept any of the material conveniences which were offered to him. His food was reduced to so small a quantity that it was a miracle that he kept alive. The only concession he would make in clothing for his long missionary journeys under a tropical sun was a pair of boots. He could put up with the most appalling conditions on his long sea voyages and endure the most agonizing extremes of heat and cold. Wherever he went he would seek out the poor and the sick and spend his time in ministering to their needs. Yet while he was occupied all day with these incessant labours, he would spend the greater part of the night in prayer. And all this was done with a gaiety and lightness of heart, which remind one of the other Francis-of Assisi.” See pictures of Saint Francis Xavier, videos:Jesuits On…Xavier, Francis Xavier in the Snows of Japan (In the Footsteps) and Prayers to St. Francis Xavier,

Saint Basil the Great (Patron Saint of Russia) (Feast Date: January 2) Extract from Saint Basil the Great: “Bishop of Caesarea, and one of the most distinguished Doctors of the Church. Born probably 329; died 1 January, 379. He ranks after Athanasius as a defender of the Oriental Church against the heresies of the fourth century. With his friend Gregory of Nazianzus and his brother Gregory of Nyssa, he makes up the trio known as “The Three Cappadocians”, far outclassing the other two in practical genius and actual achievement. . . . “Then I read the Gospel, and saw there that a great means of reaching perfection was the selling of one’s goods, the sharing of them with the poor, the giving up of all care for this life, and the refusal to allow the soul to be turned by any sympathy towards things of earth” (Ep. ccxxiii). . . . . Basil became known as the father of Oriental monasticism, the forerunner of St. Benedict.” See picture of Saint Basil, Prayer of Saint Basil the Great,, andA Prayer of St. Basil the Great After Communion,

Saint Agatha of Sicily (Patron Saint against Natural Disasters) (Feast Date: February 5.) Extract from St. Agatha Virgin and Martyr: “She was of a rich and illustrious family, and having been consecrated to God from her tender years, triumphed over many assaults upon her chastity. Quintianus, a man of consular dignity, bent on gratifying both his lust and avarice, imagined he should easily compass his wicked designs on Agatha’s person and estate by means of the emperor’s edict against the Christians. He therefore caused her to be apprehended and brought before him at Catana. Seeing herself in the hands of the persecutors, she made this prayer: “Jesus Christ, Lord of all things, you see my heart, you know my desire-possess alone all that I am. I am your sheep, make me worthy to overcome the devil.” Quintianus, being informed of her constancy after thirty days, ordered her to be brought before him. The virgin, in her first interrogatory, told him that to be a servant of Jesus Christ was the most illustrious nobility and true liberty. The judge, offended at her resolute answers, commanded her to be buffeted and led to prison. She entered it with great joy, recommending her future conflict to God. The next day she was arraigned a second time at the tribunal, and answered with equal constancy that Jesus Christ was her life and her salvation. The governor, enraged to see her suffer all this with cheerfulness, commanded her breast to be tortured, and afterwards to be cut off. At which she made him this reproach: “Cruel tyrant, do you not blush to torture this part of my body, you that sucked the breasts of a woman yourself?” See also: St. Agatha’s Crypt, Catacombs and Museum, See pictures of St. Agatha and Prayers to St. Agatha.

Disaster (Attack at Sea) Map of Gaza Strip Extract from Israel Holds Hundreds Seized During Raid on Flotilla:“JERUSALEM — The fallout from Israel’s attack on a flotilla trying to breach the blockade of Gaza widened Tuesday amid growing criticism of the raid, which left nine activists dead. . . … .The Israeli military said two militants who infiltrated from Gaza had been killed in a clash with troops, and news reports said three other militants had been killed in an airstrike after a rocket attack from Gaza. . . . “This irresponsible, heedless, unlawful attitude that defies any human virtue should definitely, but definitely, be punished,” Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday in his regular weekly address to his party. . . Israel said the violence was instigated by pro-Palestinian activists who presented themselves as humanitarians but had come ready for a fight. Organizers of the flotilla accused the Israeli forces of opening fire as soon as they landed on the deck. .Fatalities all occurred aboard the Mavi Marmara, a Turkish passenger vessel that was carrying about 600 activists under the auspices of Insani Yardim Vakfi, an organization also known as I.H.H. Israeli officials have characterized it as a dangerous Islamic organization with terrorist links . . . . Yet the organization, founded in 1992 to collect aid for the Bosnians, is now active in 120 countries and has been present at recent disaster areas like Haiti and New Orleans. “Our volunteers were not trained military personnel,”. . . . “They were civilians trying to get aid to Gaza. There were artists, intellectuals and journalists among them. . . .” See also:Israeli soldiers kill at least 10 protesters on boat carrying supplies to Gaza, Israel accused of state terrorism after assault on flotilla carrying Gaza aid, Deadly Israeli Raid on Aid Flotilla Draws Condemnation ISRAEL-OPT: Gaza food supplies strangled by 1,000-day blockade, and videos: Israeli navy storms Gaza flotilla, Israel flotilla attack brings criticism, anger, Israeli PM ‘regrets’ ship deaths,
Saint Philomena (Patron Saint of Prisoners)(Memorial: August 11) Extract from St. Philomena, Patroness and Protectress of the Living Rosary: “St. Philomena is prayed to by people of diverse ages, culture and social standing around the world. The young virgin who was martyred at age 13, willingly traded her earthly life for heavenly salvation and continues her work today promoting the virtues of purity and sanctity among the world’s youth and bringing the faithful closer to our Blessed Mother and Jesus Christ. It would seem she was held in quiet reserve by God for nearly seventeen centuries and summoned at a time when so much uncertainty and absence of faith abound. On August 10, 1835, Pauline received a miraculous cure of a severe heart ailment at Saint Philomena’s shrine in Mugnano del Cardinale, Italy, during the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Immediately following, she appealed to Pope Gregory XVI to begin an examination for the beatification of “Filumena,” daughter of light. And on Jan. 13, 1837, Pope Gregory XVI named St. Philomena Patroness of the Living Rosary, and declared her to be the “Thaumaturga,” the “Great Wonder-Worker of the nineteenth century.” In a solemn decree, he raised her to the altar of the Church, granting her a special feast day (August 11) and a Mass in her honor.” See also: Saint Philomena, Novena Prayer to Saint Philomena, and videos: Saint Philomena, Saint Philomena, Litany of Saint Philomena, The Story of St. Philomena
