Africa (Green Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of  the martyr Blessed Anacleto González Flores, may come to the aid of those affected by the twin bombings in Uganda.  May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Africa.

Disaster (Bombings)Map of Uganda Extract from: Uganda bombs kill 74, Islamists claim attack: “Somali Islamists said on Monday they had carried out two bomb attacks in Uganda that killed 74 soccer fans watching the World Cup final on television. The explosions in the closing moments of Sunday’s match ripped through two crowded venues in the capital Kampala — a restaurant and a rugby club. Al Shabaab militants in Somalia had already threatened to attack Uganda for sending peacekeeping troops to the anarchic country to prop up the Western-backed government.  In Mogadishu, the Islamist group confirmed it was responsible for the attacks and threatened more if Uganda kept its peacekeepers in Somalia. ‘Al Shabaab was behind the two bomb blasts in Uganda,” Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage, al Shabaab’s spokesman, told reporters. “We thank the mujahideen that carried out the attack “ “Uganda is a major infidel country supporting the so-called government of Somalia,’ said Sheikh Yusuf Isse, an al Shabaab commander in the Somali capital. “We know Uganda is against Islam and so we are very happy at what has happened in Kampala.” Al Shabaab on Monday threatened to attack Burundi if its troops remained in Somalia. Blessed Anacleto González Flores(Recognition celebrated by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins in a soccer stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico)(Memorial:  April 1)  Extract from Blessed Anacleto González Flores and 8 Companions:   “Anacleto González Flores was born on 13 July 1888 in Tepatitlán, Jalisco, Mexico. In 1922 he married María Concepción Guerrero and they had two children. By 1926, the situation in Mexico had worsened and Anacleto, who up until this time had advocated passive, non-violent resistance, joined the cause of the National League for the Defense of Religious Freedom upon learning of the murder of four members of the ACJM. In January 1927 guerrilla warfare spread throughout Jalisco and from his many hiding places Anacleto wrote and sent bulletins and studied major strategies. The young man was captured on the morning of 1 April 1927 in the home of the Vargas González family, along with the two Vargas brothers. He was taken to the Colorado jail, where his torture included being hung by his thumbs until his fingers were dislocated and having the bottom of his feet slashed. He refused, however, to supply his captors with any information. José Anacleto González Flores was condemned to death and was shot together with the Vargas González brothers and Luis Padilla Gómez on that same day, 1 April 1927.”  See picture of Blessed Anacleto González Flores,   See also:  Anacleto González Flores (En)Anacleto González Flores, Beato Anacleto Gonzalez Flores:(1), (2) (Sp), Anacleto Gonzalez Flores (It).

Saint Joan of Arc (Patron Saint of Soldiers) (Feast Date: May 30). Extract from Saint Joan of Arc:“One of five children born to Jacques d’Arc and Isabelle Romee. Shepherdess. Mystic. From age 13 she received visions from Saint Margaret of Antioch, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, and Michael the Archangel. In the early 15th century, England, in alliance with Burgundy, controlled most of what is modern France. In May 1428 Joan’s visions told her to find the true king of France and help him reclaim his throne. She resisted for more than three years, but finally went to Charles VII in Chinon and told him of her visions. Carrying a banner that read “Jesus, Mary”, she led troops from one battle to another. She was severely wounded, but her victories from 23 February 1429 to 23 May 1430 brought Charles VII to the throne. Captured by the Burgundians during the defence of Compiegne, she was sold to the English for 10 thousand francs. She was put on trial by an ecclesiastical court conducted by Cauchon, Bishop of Beauvais, a supporter of England, and was executed as a heretic. In 1456 her case was re-tried, and Joan was acquitted (23 years too late).  ‘About Jesus Christ and the Church, I simply know they’re just one thing, and we shouldn’t complicate the matter.’ – Saint Joan of Arc, as recorded at her trial.” See also: May 30- Saint Joan of Arc: Patron Saint of Soldiers and Rape Victims,   Prayer to Saint Joan for Faith.

Saint St. Mary, Our Lady of Knock (Patron Saint of Ireland) (Feast Date: August 21)  Extract from Our Lady of Knock: “On a rainy Thursday evening of August 21, 1879, a miraculous apparition occurred in a poor farming village in County Mayo, Ireland. The people there were suffering greatly from poverty and a famine which had brought about increased unemployment, evictions, and emigration.  In the depths of these serious problems, fifteen villagers ranging from six to seventy-five years of age, witnessed a heavenly vision which appeared on the south gable of their parish church, the Church of St. John the Baptist. The apparition became a symbol of hope, consolation, and strength to the villagers and eventually to people throughout Ireland and the world. On the night of the apparition, those witnessing the apparition knelt for two hours in the pouring rain and prayed the rosary as they watched the vision unfold. They saw Our Lady, clothed in white robes, with a gold rose upon her forehead and a brilliant gold crown on her head. . . . Within six weeks of the apparition, the Archbishop of Tuam, the Most Reverend John MacHale, set up a Church Commission of Enquiry. The fifteen witnesses were questioned and the commission reported that their evidence was ‘trustworthy and satisfactory.’ Pilgrims from all parts of Ireland and the world began to flock to the site of the apparition. The sick and disabled came in great numbers, and hundreds of cures were reported. Devotion to Our Lady of Knock developed, and Our Lady of Knock Shrine was established.” See picture of Our Lady of Knock. America (Red Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of Bl. Maria Gabriella, the Patron Saint against Poverty, may come to the aid of those displaced by the earthquake in Haiti.  May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in America.

Disaster (Earthquake – January 12, 2010) Map of Haiti Extract from In Haiti, the Displaced Are Left Clinging to the Edge:  “Hundreds of displaced families live perilously in a single file of flimsy shanties planted along the median strip of a heavily congested coastal road here called the Route des Rails. Vehicles rumble by day and night, blaring horns, kicking up dust and belching exhaust. Residents try to protect themselves by positioning tires as bumpers in front of their shacks but cars still hit, injure and sometimes kill them. Rarely does anybody stop to offer help, and Judith Guillaume, 23, often wonders why. ‘Don’t they have a heart, or a suggestion?’ asked Ms. Guillaume, who covers her children’s noses with her floral skirt when the diesel fumes get especially strong.”  See also:  Months after Haiti quake, 1.5m displaced, Nowhere to go, so Haiti’s displaced residents stay in squalid campsHAITI: Humanitarian best practice – dignity, not just digits. and KENYA: Rape risk from slum toilets.  See Pictures and Slideshows, videos:Haiti Six Months After Quake, Haiti Struggling six months after quake, and Gratitude fades for kids saved from Haiti’s Rubble.

Blessed Maria Gabriella (Patron Saint against Poverty)(Memorial: April 23) Extract from B. Maria Gabriella Sagheddu (1914-1939) (Multilingual): “Maria Sagheddu (1914-1939) was born in Dorgali, Sardinia, into a family of shepherds. Witnesses from the period of her childhood and adolescence speak of a character obstinate, critical, protesting, rebellious, but with a strong sense of duty, of loyalty, of obedience. What everyone noticed was the change that came about in her at eighteen: little by little she became gentle; the spirit of prayer and of charity grew in her, a new ecclesial and apostolic sensibility appeared; she enrolled in `Azione Cattolica’, a Catholic Youth Movement. There was born in her the depth of listening that hands itself totally over to the will of God. At twenty one she chose to consecrate herself to God and, following the guidance of her spiritual father, entered the monastery of Grottaferrata, an economically and culturally poor community, governed at that time by Mother Pia Gullini.”   See picture of Blessed Maria Gabriella.  See also:  Blessed Maria Gabriella Sagheddu: the Apostle for Spiritual EcumenismBeata María Gabriela Sagheddu (Sp), and Beata Maria Gabriella Sagheddu (It).

Saint Florian (Patron Saint against Floods) (Feast Date: May 4) Extract from:  Saint Florian von Lorch:  “Florian von Lorch was born around 250 AD and was martyred for his faith around 304 AD.  . . . He converted to Christianity when it was still a minority religion. It is said that as a youth, Florian was able to put out a fire in a house through the power of his prayers alone. It is also said that he saved an entire city from flames with only a single bucket of water. .. At the beginning of the 4th century, during the persecution named for the Emperor Diocletian, Florian made a public profession of his Christian Faith and turned himself in to the local governor. Governor Aquilinus, wishing to make an example of the popular Fire Chief, ordered his execution by burning at the stake. Florian was twice scourged, half-flayed alive, and then prepared to be set on fire. After several attempts to light the kindling failed, the infuriated Aquilinus ordered a millstone tied to Florian’s neck and Florian thrown into the River Enns. A pious woman found the body of the Martyr Florian and returned it to dry land. .Eventually, his body was removed to an Augustinian Abbey near Linz, which became known as The Abbey Saint Florian. . . . Many miracles of healing were attributed to his intercession and he was invoked as a powerful protector when in danger from fire or water. . .  ”   See pictures of Saint Florian, Saint Florian, Patron Saint of Firefighters, St. Florian Prayer ;San Floriano Martire (It), San Floriano di Lorch Martire (It); San Florián (Sp)Santa Giovanna d’Arco (It), andŚwięty Florian, żołnierz, męczennik (Po).
