Saint Anastasia (Healer from Poison)(Feast Date: Dec. 25) Extract from Saint Anastasia: “St. Anastasia, inflamed with the love of God, occupied her time in consoling and succoring the Christians, particularly those who were in prison, who she exhorted to suffer for the faith. Having heard of the arrest of St. Chrysogonus, she hurried to his prison, and esteemed herself fortunate in having it in her power to be of service to him in this trial. . . . St. Chrysogonus, by order of Diocletian on Nov. 24 in the year 303, was beheaded, but St. Anastasia continued her mission to the prisoners. . . . . Florus, . . . caused the saint to be shut up in prison, with the intention of starving her; but the Lord miraculously preserved her life. Florus transferred her to another prison thinking the jailer had transgressed his orders to starve her – but she continued to live without food. Florus then ordered her to be put on board a ship with 120 idolaters – the ship was bored with holes and was supposed to sink. The ship soon filled with water, but instead of sinking went ashore; and the miracle worked the conversion of all these persons, who afterwards had the glory of suffering martyrdom for Jesus Christ. St. Anastasia was then conducted to the island of Palmarola, under sentence of death; she consummated her triumph in the flames.” See pictures of St. Anastasia. Saint Mary of Egypt (Patron Saint against Sexual Temptation)(Feast Date: April 2, 3). Extract from Saint Mary of Egypt: Beautiful, spoiled, cynical, disenchanted, rich child who was the center of her family’s pride, and repaid them by running away at age 12. Ran to Alexandria, Egypt where she worked as a dancer, singer, and prostitute for 17 years. Took ship on a pilgrimage to Palestine, hoping to ply her trade among the pilgrims, and then in Jerusalem. On the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross she moved with the crowds to the church, looking for customers. At the church door she found herself repelled, unable to open the door; she was overcome with remorse for her life and exclusion from the Church. She repented, and asked for Our Lady’s guidance; a voice told that to find rest, she should cross the Jordan River. The next day she crossed the river, wandered into the desert, and took up the life of a hermit for nearly 50 years as penance. She lived on herbs, berries, and whatever came to hand. She met Saint Zosimus of Palestine. She once told him to come back exactly one year from that day; when he did, he found she’d died; with a lion help, he dug her grave. Zosimus later wrote a biography of her, and her life was a popular story in the Middle Ages.” See also: St. Mary of Egypt(En), Santa Maria de Egipto(Sp),Santa Maria Egiziaca(It),Marie l’Égyptienne(Fr), and Maria Egipcjanka (Po), See picture of Saint Mary of Egypt. Saint Cecilia (Patron Saint of Music) (Feast Date: Nov. 22) Extract from St. Cecilia: “It is believed that St. Cecilia was born in the 2nd or 3d century A.D., although the dates of her birth and martyrdom are unknown. A religious romance telling the love story of Saint Cecilia and Valerian appeared in Greece during the 4th century A.D., she is purported to have been the daughter of a wealthy Roman family, a Christian from birth, who was promised in marriage to a pagan named Valerian. Cecilia, however, had vowed her virginity to God, and wore sackcloth, fasted and prayed in hopes of keeping this promise. Saint Cecilia disclosed her wishes to her husband on their wedding night. She told Valerian that an angel watched over her to guard her purity. He wanted to see the angel, so St. Cecilia sent him to Pope Urban (223-230). Accounts of how and when Valerian saw the angel vary, but one states that he was baptized by the Pope, and, upon his return to Saint Cecilia, they were both given heavenly crowns by an angel. . . .” See picture of Saint Cecilia. Disaster (Witch Hunts) Map of India. Extract from Sad reality of India’s witch hunts: “In parts of India, witch hunting is not merely a dark part of history. It is still happening today. Assaults are widespread in rural areas, where dozens of women die every year after being accused of witchcraft. Hundreds of others are tortured. Sushila is a widow in her 60s, and is disabled – her left hand is not fully developed. Yet that didn’t stop men in her village branding her a witch and beating her in public last year. ‘They dragged me from my home and said ‘You are a witch. We’ll remove the evil spirit from you,’ Sushila recalls. ‘They took off my clothes. They pulled my hair and beat me up. . . .’ Sushila and two other widows, Safina Bibi and Sagrina Bibi, were paraded as witches and thrashed by 15 men. .. ‘There are no medical facilities in the villages, so people don’t get medical treatment. If they fall sick, they go to the local medicine man, who tells them there is someone in your village casting black magic on you.’ Apart from superstitious beliefs, it seems there are occasions when people – especially widows – are targeted for their property. After killing them, the villagers divide the land among themselves. . . . ” See also: The dark side of India, where a witch-doctor’s word means death, 200 ‘witches’ killed in India each year, and Village ‘witches’ beaten in India.
Saint Ebbe of Minister-in Thannet (Accused of Witchcraft) (Feast Date: November 19) Extract from Saint Ebbe of Minister-in Thannet: “In 664, Ebbe’s cousin Egbert ascended to the throne of Kent. Worried about claims to the crown by Ethelred and Ethelbert, Egbert had them murdered. He later repented of the crime, and offered Queen Ebbe compensation for the loss (weregild). Ebbe chose a gift of as much land as her tame doe could run around in one course; the king agreed, and the Isle of Thanet was chosen as the site. The king’s advisor, Thunor, who had recommended the murders, accused Ebbe of witchcraft, mounted his horse, and set off in pursuit of the doe; the earth promptly opened and swallowed him. The doe circled a large plot of land, which became the site of the monastery of Minster, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin; today the area is known as Ebbsfleet in memory of Ebbe. On the death of King Merewalh in 673, Ebbe entered the convent as its first abbess.”
