By the end of July some 1,300 cases had been recorded in Cameroon’s Extreme North region. Cameroon is one of several countries across the region where flooding this year has killed many and destroyed homes, livestock and crops.  ‘Poverty is absolutely the foremost cause here – people do not have the means to observe even a minimum of good hygiene. You can tell people all you want to wash their hands with soap before eating, but what if they don’t have money to buy soap?'”  See also:  Cholera outbreak kills 200 in Cameroon , Cameroon cholera deaths rising as heavy rains bring flooding, video: Taps run dry in water-rich Cameroon.

Saint Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows(Feast Date: Sept. 15).  Extract from Our Lady of Sorrows:  “The principal biblical references to Mary’s sorrows are in Lk 2:35 and Jn 19:26-27. The Lucan passage is Simeon’s prediction about a sword piercing Mary’s soul; the Johannine passage relates Jesus’ words to Mary and to the beloved disciple. Many early Church writers interpret the sword as Mary’s sorrows, especially as she saw Jesus die on the cross. Thus, the two passages are brought together as prediction and fulfillment. St. Ambrose (Dec. 7) in particular sees Mary as a sorrowful yet powerful figure at the cross. Mary stood fearlessly at the cross while others fled. Mary looked on her Son’s wounds with pity, but saw in them the salvation of the world. They are located some 700m vertically underground, 7km (4.5 miles) inside the winding mine.” See also:  Miners shared limited food to survive, president says and Chile’s trapped miners could be stuck until Christmas.

Saint (Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha) (Patron Saint of Environmentalists) (Feast Dates:  Apr 17.  Alternate Feast Dates;  July 14, March 25) Extract from Blessed Kateri, Model Ecologist:  “Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha (1656-1680) is honored as the patroness of ecology and the environment.  . . . Tekakwitha’s father was a Mohawk chief and her mother was a Catholic Algonquin.  At the age of four, smallpox attacked her village, taking the lives of her parents and baby brother, and leaving Tekakwitha an orphan.  Although forever weakened, scarred, and partially blind, Tekakwitha survived. The brightness of the sun blinded her and she would feel her way around as she walked.  Seeing her groping about, they named here Tekakwitha, which means “The One Who Walks Groping for Her Way.” Kateri led a life of prayer and penitential practices.  She taught the young and helped those in the village who were poor or sick.  Her favorite devotion was to fashion crosses out of sticks and place them throughout the woods.  These crosses served as stations that reminded her to spend a moment in prayer.  Kateri’s motto became, “Who can tell me what is most pleasing to God that I may do it?”  She spent much of her time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, kneeling in the cold chapel for hours.  Kateri loved the Rosary and carried it around her neck always.” See picture of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha.  See also  March 25, April 17, July 14 – Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha: Patron Saint of Environmentalists.
