Africa (Green Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession ofSaint Chad, who prayed passionately during storms, may come to the aid of those affected by the flooding in Chad.  May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Africa

Disaster (Flooding) (Summer, 2010)Map of Chad Extract fromUN: 24 dead, 70,000 homeless in Chad flooding:“Some 70,000 people have been left homeless by flooding triggered by heavy rains in the central African nation of Chad, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said Sunday.  Twenty-four people have been killed and 29 others injured, said Ute Kollies, head of the office’s branch in Chad. Forty-six others have died from cholera that broke out in the wake of the floods. Some 700 people are suffering from cholera, she said. Overall, nearly 145,000 people in Chad have been affected by the flooding, and that number is rising, she said. ‘Today is the worst, and it’s getting more and more out of hand,’ she said. ‘This is the crisis point, at the moment.’ Flooding has affected more than half of Chad’s regions, she said. The same regions were hit by extreme drought last year. About 31,500 hectares (77,000 acres) of crops have been destroyed. About 6,000 people have been displaced, Kollies said. They have moved in with family or sought shelter in schools and open areas. Most roads are closed in the affected areas, meaning aid has to be airlifted, Kollies said. See also: Radio:Chad Hit by Worst Floods in Four Decades. Saint Chad of Mercia (He prayed passionately during storms) (Feast Date: March 2). Extract from Saint Chad: “He founded monasteries. . . evangelized, travelled and preached, reformed monastic life in his diocese, and built a cathedral on land that had been the site of the martyrdom of 1,000 Christians by the pagan Mercians. Miraculous cures reported at the wells he caused to be dug for the relief of travellers. During storms, Chad would go to chapel and pray continually. He explained, “God thunders forth from heaven to rouse people to fear the Lord, to call them to remember the future judgment…when God will come in the clouds in great power and majesty to judge the living and the dead. And so we ought to respond to God’s heavenly warning with due fear and love so that as often as God disturbs the sky, yet spares us still, we should implore God’s mercy, examining the innermost recesses of our hearts and purging out the dregs of our sins, and behave with such caution that we may never deserve to be struck down.”  See PICTURE of Saint Chad.See also: St. Chad, St Chad – Staffordshire’s saintSt. Ceadda (En),Chad of Mercia (Multilingual)San Chad Marzo 2 (Sp), San Ceadda (Chad) di Lichfield Abate e vescovo (It)Błogosławiony Karol, męczennik (Po), PRAYERS to Saint Chad (En).

The district military commander in Manokwari, Lieutenant Colonel Edward Sitorus, said soldiers were deployed around vital installations and at locations where crowds had gathered. The head of the Manokwari Police, Adjunct Senior Commander, Bambang Ricky, said officers had been forced to fire their weapons last Wednesday in self-defence when dozens of residents became violent after a motorist fled the scene of an accident. He said that day, mobs armed with knives and spears blocked roads and threw stones at Brimob officers who arrived at the scene of the accident. Bambang said that other Brimob officers conducted a number of raids to locate those responsible, firing weapons while rioting continued, killing two residents and injuring others. The Jakarta Globe reports earlier this month, officers killed seven people in Buol, Central Sulawesi, after residents attacked a police station.”  ArticlesWest Papua police kill two in road riot, Security tight in West Papua province after protests and Two killed after residents, police clash in Manokwari.

Saint Norbert of Xanten (Patron Saint of Peace) (Feast Date: June 6). Extract from Saint Norbert:  ” The early part of his life was devoted to the world and its pleasures. He entered upon the ecclesiastical state in a worldly spirit. . . . To ensure his success at court, he also had no qualms about accepting holy orders as a canon and whatever financial benefices that came with that position, although he did hesitate at becoming a priest and the implied responsibilities that came with that vocation.  . . high winds pushed and pulled at his fashionable coif, rain slashed at his fancy clothes, and dark roiling clouds pressed night down upon his light thoughts. A sudden flash of lightning split the dark and his horse bucked, throwing Norbert to the ground. For almost an hour, the still form of the courtier lay unmoving. Even the rain soaking his clothes and the howl of thunder did not bring him back to consciousness and life. When he awoke his first words were, ‘Lord, what do you want me to do?’ — the same words Saul spoke on the road to Damascus. In response Norbert heard in his heart, “Turn from evil and do good. Seek peace and pursue it.” See PICTURE of Saint Norbert. Disaster (Shootings) (September 19, 2010) Map of Germany Extract from: Fatal shooting at German hospital: “A woman armed with an automatic weapon has shot dead one person at a hospital in Germany before being killed by police. . . . Police believe the shooting is linked to an explosion at a nearby building where they found the bodies of a man and a child. . . .Police say there was an explosion in an apartment block opposite the hospital, after which witnesses saw the woman run from the building and into St Elisabethen hospital holding a gun. The woman killed a male nurse and critically wounded a police officer who happened to be in the hospital at the time.  When police arrived at the scene, the woman turned the gun on the officers, who shot back and killed her. Eyewitness Siegfried Schmid said he heard the explosion and then saw the woman load her gun and run into the hospital. ‘She headed straight to the gynaecology station. Then she shot someone,’ he said. ‘I ran downstairs and finally the police arrived. . . . I took them to the first floor. She immediately began to shoot around again and wounded a policeman in the knee.’ Prosecutors say a domestic dispute may have triggered the shooting.”   Articles:Woman opens fire in German town, four killed, 4 dead in Germany fire, shooting. Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Patron Saint of Catemaco, Veracruz, Mexico, may come to the aid of those affected by Hurricane Karl in Mexico.  May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in America.

Disaster (Hurricane Karl) (September 17, 2010)Map of the Mexico Extract from:  Hurricane Karl Smashes into Mexican Gulf Coast:  “Hurricane Karl smashed into Mexico’s Gulf Coast on Friday, creating havoc in the major port city of Veracruz and forcing the country to shut down its only nuclear power plant and its central Gulf Coast oil platforms. Saint Mary, Nuestra Senora del Carmen [Our Lady of Mount Carmel] (Patron Saint of Catemaco, Veracruz, Mexico) (Feast Date: July 16)Extract from Our Lady of Mt.Carmel:  “There is a tradition (which may not be historical) that Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock, a leader of the Carmelites, and gave him a scapular, telling him to promote devotion to it. The scapular is a modified version of Mary’s own garment. It symbolizes her special protection and calls the wearers to consecrate themselves to her in a special way. The scapular reminds us of the gospel call to prayer and penance—a call that Mary models in a splendid way.”   See PICTURE of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Asia (Yellow Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of Saint Notburga, patron saint of farmers and peasants, may come to the aid of those affected by homelessness and the destruction of crops by monsoons in India.  May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Asia.

Disaster (Monsoons) Map of India Extract from India floods leave two million homeless, destroy crops: “At least two million people in northern India have been left homeless as the Ganges and other rivers, swollen by heavy monsoon rains, broke embankments and submerged villages, fields and religious sites. State officials said 500,000 hectares of agriculture land in top cane growing state Uttar Pradesh were flooded and the heavy rains could affect cotton output from Punjab and Haryana. They said floods in Uttar Pradesh were the worst in years and were still assessing the damage to the cane. Any output loss would reduce sugar supply in India, the world’s top consumer and second-largest producer of the sweetner, and could push up prices globally. The Ganges, a dip in which Hindus believe washes away sins, and its tributary rivers have risen to close to their record-high levels and weather officials have forecast heavy rains in the region for the next two days. ‘Agriculture fields and many roads are still water-logged… the real estimation would be possible when the water recedes,’ said K.K. Sinha, a senior Uttar Pradesh government official.” Articles: Floods, Rains – News Roundup (8-15 September 2010), India floods kill 63 people in two days. Saint Notburga (Patron Saint of Farmers and Peasants) (Feast Date:  September 14) Extract from Saint Notburga: “Born to a peasant family. Worked as a kitchen maid at the house of Count Henry of Rattenberg at age 18. The count’s wife, Ottilia, ordered Notburga to feed leftover food to the house swine; she gave it to the poor instead. Warned about her behavior, Nortburga fed the leftovers to the pigs, and gave much of her own food to the poor. Ottilia saw this as a form of disobedience, and dismissed her. Worked as a servant for a farmer in Eben am Achensee, Austria. However, when her the lady Ottilia died, the count re-hired her, and she spent the rest of her life as a servant in his house. Worked with the poor. Miracle worker. Miracle stories are an integral part of Notburga’s life. . . .” See PICTURE of Saint Notburga. See also Notburga (Multilingual), Santa Notburga (Sp)Santa Notburga di Eben,  Domestica (It), Sw.
