Forty others were injured when the lightning struck a tent set up outside the school in KwaZulu-Natal Friday afternoon, sparking a fire, said Bonginkosi Meshack Radebe, minister of social development in the province. Earlier reports said the deaths were caused by the lightning. At least 29 of those injured remained in the hospital Saturday night, including 23 in critical condition. Eleven of the injured are children, Radebe said. Two parents, two teachers, a gardener and a nursery school director also were killed, said Mashu Cele, a spokeswoman for Radebe. The government set up meetings with psychologists for the children and their families, and also is offering to pay for all medical and hospital bills.” Read more: Lightning strike kills 7 at nursery school party in South Africa, Lightning kills seven at South Africa nursery party.
Saint Thomas Aquinas (Patron of Schools and against Lightning) (Feast Date: March 7)Extract from SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS Doctor of the Church (1225-1274): “The great Saint Thomas was born of noble parents at Aquino near Naples in Italy, in 1225; his century was replete with great names and Christian works, yet he dominates it by the power of his thought and the perfection of his works. In his childhood he was the provider for the poor of the neighborhood during a famine; his father, meeting him in a corridor with the food he had succeeded in taking from the kitchen, asked him what he had under his cloak; he opened it and fresh roses fell on the ground. The nobleman embraced his son and amid his tears, gave him permission to follow thereafter all inspirations of his charity. . . .While Saint Thomas was in confinement at Rocca Secca, his brothers endeavored to entrap him into sin, but the attempt only ended in the triumph of his purity. Snatching from the hearth a burning coal, the Saint drove from his chamber the courtesan whom they had concealed there. Then marking a cross upon the wall, he knelt down to pray. Immediately, while he was rapt in ecstasy, an Angel girded him with a cord, in token of the gift of perpetual chastity which God had given him. The pain caused by the girdle was so sharp that Saint Thomas uttered a piercing cry, which brought his guards into the room. But he never related this grace to anyone save Father Raynald, his confessor, a short time before his death. Thus originated the Confraternity of the Angelic Warfare, for the preservation of the virtue of chastity.” See PICTURE of St. Thomas Aquinas. Saint Zita of Lucca (Patron Saint of Domestic Workers) (Memorial: April 27)Extract from Saint Zita of Lucca. “Born to a very poor but pious family. At age twelve she became a domestic servant for the wealthy Fainelli family in Lucca, Italy, a position she kept all her life; she looked at it as a way to serve God. She often gave her own food, and sometimes that of her master, to those poorer than herself, which caused her to get in frequent trouble with her employers and the other servants in the house who resented her. However, she did such a fine job she was eventually placed in charge of the house, and entrusted with its keys. Her reputation was such that Dante in the Inferno referred to the city of Lucca as ‘Santa Zita.'” See PICTURE of Saint Zita. At least one polling station was trashed by one angry group. . . .’Look what our government spends its money on,’ said Abellar Sony, brandishing a fistful of unused ballot papers at a polling station near the Cite Soleil slum. Children played with unmarked ballot papers, scattering them in the air. The CEP acknowledged “some problems” and said it was trying to resolve them after the turbulent presidential and legislative elections went ahead amid a raging cholera epidemic and political tensions. ‘We denounce a massive fraud that is occurring across the country. … We demand the cancellation pure and simple of these skewed elections,’ the 12 presidential candidates said in a statement read to reporters at a Port-au-Prince hotel. . . . . Violence, including ambushes of campaign caravans, random gunfire and attacks by rioters against Nepalese U.N. peacekeepers, whom some Haitians accuse of bringing in the cholera, killed several people in the run-up to the vote.” See alsoHaiti election valid despite ‘irregularities’, says OAS, Haiti election valid despite ‘irregularities’, says OAS,In Haiti, election day chaos casts shadow over hopeful voters, Haitian Candidates Call to Void Election , Protest of Haiti election results: ‘We will set the country on fire’, Haiti election protesters rampage, torch building. Saint Thomas More. (Patron Saint of Politicians) (Feast Date: June 22)Extract from St. Thomas More: “A wit and a reformer, this learned man numbered bishops and scholars among his friends, and by 1516 wrote his world-famous book “Utopia”. He attracted the attention of Henry VIII who appointed him to a succession of high posts and missions, and finally made him Lord Chancellor in 1529. However, he resigned in 1532, at the height of his career and reputation, when Henry persisted in holding his own opinions regarding marriage and the supremacy of the Pope. The rest of his life was spent in writing mostly in defense of the Church. In 1534, with his close friend, St. John Fisher, he refused to render allegiance to the King as the Head of the Church of England and was confined to the Tower. Fifteen months later, and nine days after St. John Fisher’s execution, he was tried and convicted of treason. He told the court that he could not go against his conscience and wished his judges that ‘we may yet hereafter in heaven merrily all meet together to everlasting salvation.’ And on the scaffold, he told the crowd of spectators that he was dying as ‘the King’s good servant-but God’s first.’ He was beheaded on July 6, 1535.” See PICTURE of Saint Tomas More. Her father and mother, afterwards honored as St. Walbert and St. Bertilia, lived in Flanders in the province of Hainault. Aldegundis was urged to marry, but she chose a life of virginity and, leaving her home, received the veil from St. Amandus, Bishop of Maastricht. Then she walked dry-shod over the Sambre, and built on its banks a small nunnery, at a desert placed called Malbode.
