Saint Heribert of Cologne (Patrons Saint of Drought Relief, for Rain)(Feast Date: March 16) ST. HERIBERT OF COLOGNE:  “Heribert found his life ambition thwarted by his father, but he made the best of it and found another pathway to holiness. . . .Since he could not become a (Benedictine) monk, St. Heribert of Cologne cultivated an intense spiritual life, at the same time serving his people and his diocese tirelessly. All the money he could spare from his own personal income, Heribert gave to the poor, sent money to priests throughout his diocese to help the destitute, and even went to hospitals and private homes to help the poor and the sick. During a great drought in the city, he led a procession through the streets of the city to the church of St. Severinus, and when he rose from his knees at the altar, a torrential rain came down and the year’s harvest was saved. People in that part of Germany still pray to him for rain. . . .” See PICTURE of St. Heribert. Disaster (Flooding)Map of Australia Extract from  Australia Flood Water Full of Deadly Critters“ROCKHAMPTON, Australia – Residents of an Australian city cut off by some of the country’s worst flooding in decades are being warned to stay out of the water, and not just because of the risk of being swept away: Debris, snakes and even crocodiles could also pose a danger.  Large parts of the coastal city of Rockhampton were under water Tuesday. The waters were still rising, with the 75,000-strong population bracing for the floods’ expected peak in the next 24 hours as a huge inland sea spawned by heavy rain across Queensland state drains toward the ocean. . . .  Up to 500 people have been evacuated from their homes along the Fitzroy River, which runs through the city and has spilled over its banks and inundated houses and businesses in waters ranging from a few inches (centimeters) to waist-deep, with levels expected to rise another few feet (half-meter). Air and rail links to the city were cut and only one main road remained open. Adding to the woes, Rockhampton Mayor Brad Carter said Tuesday the floodwaters were threatening Rockhampton’s sewage treatment plants and officials may seek to discharge some effluent directly into the swollen river system. . . . .  No one has died in Rockhampton, but swollen rivers and flooding have killed 10 people in Queensland since late November, police say.” See also: Rain hits Australia flood region, Australian PM Gillard warns floods will recede slowly, Australia’s prime minister: Flooding expected to rise in St. George.  Video: Crops, industry hit by Australian floods.

Saint Gregory Thaumaturgus (Patron Saint against Floods) (Feast Date: November 17)Extract from St. Gregory Thaumaturgus:  “Gregory was of a distinguished pagan family. He was born at Neocaesarea, Pontus, and studied law there. About 233, he and his brother, Athenodorus, accompanied his sister, who was joining her husband in Caesarea, Palestine, while they continued on to Beirut to continue their law studies. They met Origen and instead of going to Beirut, entered his school at Caesarea, studied theology, were converted to Christianity by Origen, and became his disciples. Gregory returned to Neocaesarea about 238, intending to practice law, but was elected bishop by the seventeen Christians of the city. It soon became apparent that he was gifted with remarkable powers. . . . He is invoked against floods and earthquakes (at one time he reportedly stopped the flooding Lycus, and at another, he moved a mountain). According to Gregory of Nyssa, Gregory Thaumaturgus experienced a vision of Our Lady, the first such recorded vision. He wrote a panegyric to Origen, a treatise on the Creed, and a dissertation addressed to Theopompus; St. Gregory of Nyssa wrote a panegyric to Gregory Thaumaturgus.”   See PICTURE of Saint Gregory Thaumaturgus. The flash floods in early December led to 40,000 people being evacuated from their damaged or destroyed homes, including about 10,000 who were uprooted by violence in the region in the 1990s, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The agency has already provided food and non-food items, including blankets, mattresses, jerry cans, firewood and stoves, to some 2,400 flood victims in Bosnia and Herzegovina with the help of its partners on the ground. Naveed Hussein, UNHCR Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, said that while floodwaters had receded in most areas, flood victims continue to ask for help. It is necessary to ‘keep a high level of attention on this vulnerable population. The extent of the problem does not allow us to neglect those affected,’ he stated.” See also: Bosnia Blames Montenegro Dam For Floods,Serbia Utility Rejects Blame for Floods in Bosnia. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him’ (Mark 1:19-20). Saint Mary, Our Lady of the Highways (Our Lady of the Cedars) (Patron Saint of Arizona) (Feast Dates: May 24) Extract from:  History of the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Highway:  “On Sunday, June 28, 1936, Father John Joseph McLaughlin, a recently ordained priest from St. Francis Church in New York, assisted Father Giles with the morning Masses. That evening the two priests set out for St. Joseph’s Seminary in Callicoon, New York, to begin their annual retreat. On the way their car was struck by another car. Father John Joseph was killed instantly; Father Giles, however, escaped serious injury. Father Giles was convinced that he owed his life to the intercession of the Blessed
Virgin. Just two months previous to the accident he had begun the Miraculous Medal Novena in the parish. In gratitude to Our Lady, Father Giles built a shrine in Mary’s honor in the field across from the original church. It would seem that the original shrine was intended to be a Lourdes Grotto. However, the idea of a Shrine dedicated to Our Lady of the Highway gradually evolved. Father Giles obtained permission from Bishop McLoughlin of Paterson to name the shrine in honor of Our Lady of the Highway. As devotion grew at the little shrine, many persons asked Father to have a special medal struck honoring Our Lady under this title. With the Bishop’s permission a medal was prepared in September 1937, bearing an image of Our Lady and the inscription: ‘Our Lady of the Highway, be with us on our journey; for all thy ways are beautiful and all thy paths are peace.'”  See PICTURE of Our Lady of the Cedars. Mass testing of young children in the central Chinese town of Gaohe, Anhui province, began in December.  Lead poisoning, which tends to build up slowly as a result of repeated exposure, can damage the kidneys, nervous and reproductive systems and is especially harmful to children, causing brain damage and behavioural problems. Huang Dazhai, the father of five-year-old Huang Han, who was among the first to be diagnosed with toxic levels of lead in his blood, told reporters from the China Daily newspaper that his son had been irritable and hyperactive. “My wife called me on New Year’s Eve, telling me to come home immediately and take the child to hospital,” he said. Jiang Feng, another father, said his 14 month-old had been severely poisoned despite only moving to Gaohe a few months ago. The local government blamed a battery plant just a few blocks from a densely-populated part of the town for the emergency, and said the factory had not passed its safety checks. The plant has now been closed, it added.
