Africa (Green Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Notburga,  the Patron Saint of Farmers, may come to the aid of those whose livelihoods were affected by flooding in South Africa.  May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Africa.

Disaster (Flooding) (January 2011) Map of South Africa. Extract from Floods in South Africa Damage Corn, Grape Crops:  “South African farmers may have incurred losses of about 1 billion rand ($145 million) as a result of flooding that damaged grape, corn and sunflower crops, according to Agri SA, a farmers’ organization.. . . Floods have hit seven of South Africa’s nine provinces since mid-December, claiming at least 40 lives and displacing more than 6,000 people. The government yesterday declared 28 municipalities disaster areas, saying damages totaling 356 million rand have been recorded so far in three provinces. ‘It’s very early to assess whether there is significant damage’ to grain fields, said Kobus Laubscher, general manager of Bothaville-based Grain SA, another farmers’ organization. ‘It’s possible that plants will recover. The next week to ten days will be important in determining the ultimate effect.’ In December, most of the country had more than double the normal volume of rain for the month, according to data on the South African Weather Service website.” See also: South African flood deaths rise to 70, South Africa flood death toll rises as government declares 33 disaster zones. Saint Notburga (Patron of Farmers) (Feast Date: September 14) Extract from St. Notburga: “Patroness of servants and peasants, b. c. 1265 at Rattenberg on the Inn; d. c. 16 September, 1313. She was cook in the family of Count Henry of Rothenburg, and used to give food to the poor. But Ottilia, her mistress, ordered her to feed the swine with whatever food was left. She, therefore, saved some of her own food, especially on Fridays, and brought it to the poor. One day, according to legend, her master met her, and commanded her to show him what she was carrying. She obeyed, but instead of the food he saw only shavings, and the wine he found to be vinegar. Hereupon Ottilia dismissed her, but soon fell dangerously ill, and Notburga remained to nurse her and prepared her for death. Notburga then entered the service of a peasant in the town of Eben, on condition that she be permitted to go to church evenings before Sundays and festivals. One evening her master urged her to continue working in the field. Throwing her sickle into the air she said: ‘Let my sickle be judge between me and you,’ and the sickle remained suspended in the air. . . . ” See PICTURE of Saint Notburga. Saint Amand of Maastritcht (Patron Saint of Merchants) (Feast Date: February 6) Extract from Saint Amand: “This great missionary was born in lower Poitou about the year 584. At the age of twenty, he retired to a small monastery in the island of Yeu, near that of Re. He had not been there more than a year when his father discovered him and tried to persuade him to return home. When he threatened to disinherit him, the saint cheerfully replied, ‘Christ is my only inheritance.’ Amand afterward went to Tours, where he was ordained, and then to Bourges, where he lived fifteen years under the direction of St. Austregisilus, the bishop, in a cell near the cathedral. After a pilgrimage to Rome, he returned to France and was consecrated bishop in 629 without any fixed See, receiving a general commission to teach the Faith to the heathens. He preached the gospel in Flanders and northern France, with a brief excursion to the Slavs in Carinthia and perhaps, to Gascony. He reproved King Dagobert I for his crimes and accordingly, was banished. But Dagobert soon recalled him, and asked him to baptize his newborn son Sigebert, afterwards to become a king and a saint. . . . The people about Ghent were so ferociously hostile that no preacher dared venture among them. This moved Amand to attempt that mission, in the course of which he was sometimes beaten and thrown into the river. He persevered, however, and in the end people came in crowds droves to be baptized.See PICTURE of Saint Amand.  Saint Boris (Patron Saint of Moscow, Russia) (Feast Date: July 24) Extract from Holy Maryrs Boris and Gleb: “The holy Passion-bearers Boris and Gleb, named Romanus and David in sacred Baptism, were the pious sons of the holy Great Prince Vladimir. In 1015 they were slain at the command of their brother Svyatopolk-Saint Boris, on July 24 on the Alta River, near Pereyaslavl, and Saint Gleb, on September 5 on the bank of the Smyadinya River, near Smolensk. Although both had understood their brother’s designs against them, they refused to take up arms against him and bring civil war upon their land, preferring to fulfill the commandment, “Resist not evil” (Matt. 5:39). The holy relics of Saint Boris were then buried in Vyshgorod, to which the holy relics of his brother were transferred five years later. Miracles were worked through the holy relics of the meek and guileless brothers during the consecration in Vyshgorod of a church in their honor on this day in 1021.” See PICTURE of Saint Boris. America (Red Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Protectress of the Unborn and Patroness of the Americas, may come to the aid of those affected by Abortion in the United States.  May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in America.

Disaster (Abortion) Map of in United States Extract from Abortion: “Aborted babies must have justice, too. This is because they, like older children, have souls, even though marred by original sin. David tells us, ‘Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me’(Ps. 51:5, NIV). Since sinfulness is a spiritual rather than a physical condition, David must have had a spiritual nature from the time of conception. The same is shown in James 2:26, which tells us that ‘the body without the spirit is dead’: The soul is the life-principle of the human body. Since from the time of conception the child’s body is alive (as shown by the fact it is growing), the child’s body must already have its spirit. Thus, in 1995 Pope John Paul II declared that the Church’s teaching on abortion “is unchanged and unchangeable. Therefore, by the authority which Christ conferred upon Peter and his successors . . . I declare that direct abortion, that is, abortion willed as an end or as a means, always constitutes a grave moral disorder, since it is the deliberate killing of an innocent human being. This doctrine is based upon the natural law and upon the written word of God, is transmitted by the Church’s tradition and taught by the ordinary and universal magisterium. No circumstance, no purpose, no law whatsoever can ever make licit an act which is intrinsically illicit, since it is contrary to the law of God which is written in every human heart, knowable by reason itself, and proclaimed by the Church” (Evangelium Vitae 62). Saint Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe (Protectress of the Unborn and Patron of the Americas) (Feast Date: December 12) Extract from Our Lady of Guadalupe:  “A poor Indian named Cuauhtlatohuac was baptized and given the name Juan Diego. He was a 57-year-old widower and lived in a small village near Mexico City. On Saturday morning, December 9, 1531, he was on his way to a nearby barrio to attend Mass in honor of Our Lady.  He was walking by a hill called Tepeyac when he heard beautiful music like the warbling of birds. A radiant cloud appeared and within it a young Native American maiden dressed like an Aztec princess. The lady spoke to him in his own language and sent him to the bishop of Mexico, a Franciscan named Juan de Zumarraga. The bishop was to build a chapel in the place where the lady appeared.” See PICTURES of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Saint Eulalia of Barcelona (Patron Saint of Drought Relief) (Feast Date: February 12) Extract from St. Eulalia of Barcelona: “The Acts of her life and martyrdom were copied early in the twelfth century, and with elegant conciseness, by the learned ecclesiastic Renallus Grammaticus (Bol. acad. hist., Madrid, 1902, XLI, 253-255). Their chief historical source is a Latin hymn of the middle of the seventh century by Quiricus, Bishop of Barcelona, friend and correspondent of St. Ildephonsus of Toledo and of Tajo, Bishop of Saragossa. This hymn, identical with that of Prudentius (Peridstephanon, III) for the feast of St. Eulalia of Mérida (10 December, 304), was preserved in the Visigothic Church and has reached us through the Mozarabic Liturgy.”  See PICTURE of Saint Eulalia.
