Africa (Green Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of  St. Godeberta of Noyon, the Patron Saint of Drought Relief, may come to the aid of those affected by Drought in Somalia and elsewhere in Eastern Africa.  May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Africa.

Disaster (Drought) (Spring, 2011) Map of Somalia. Extract fromSomalia: drought, political instability aggravate humanitarian crisis:   “The UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says drought – not political instability – is now the leading cause of new displacement in Somalia: since December of last year, more than 52 thousand people have fled the countryside and travelled to urban areas in search of assistance. The Apostolic Administrator for Mogadishu and all Somalia, bishop Giorgio Bertin told Vatican Radio he is especially concerned for the people who try to make their living as semi-nomadic shepherds on the arid Somali range. “The humanitarian situation is increasingly worrying as a result of this new dimension of the crisis,” he said. Bishop Bertin’s concerns were consonant with those expressed by the OCHA, which issued a statement saying that, although migration of people and livestock is not unusual during the dry season, this appears to be the first time ever pastoralists and their livestock have migrated into the capital, a situation the OCHA says is indicative of the severity of the drought situation in the country.” See also: SOMALIA: Drought-displaced “in tens of thousands”, UN appeals for more funds to help millions of drought-hit people in Horn of Africa, U.N.: Drought leaves millions hungry in E. Saint Godeberta of Noyon (Patron Saint for Drought Relief) (Feast Date: April 11) Extract from St. Godeberta:  “She was very carefully educated, her parents being of noble rank and attached to the court of King Clovis II. When the question of her marriage was being discussed in presence of the king, the saintly Bishop of Noyon, Eligius, as if by inspiration, presented Godeberta with a golden ring and expressed the hope that she might devote her life to the service of God. Godeberta, moved by the Holy Spirit and feeling her heart suddenly filled with Divine love, turned away from the bright prospects before her and refused the advantageous offers that had been made by her noble suitors. She declared her willingness to be the spouse of Christ and asked the holy prelate to allow her to assume the veil. In a short time all opposition to her wishes disappeared and she entered on her new life under the guidance of St. Eligius.”  See PICTURE of St. Godeberta. A child advocate from the commission, Seto Mulyadi, said an increased awareness about measures to report and tackle child abuse had led to an increase in the numbers of reports filed each year. “People now have the courage to file reports, since [child abuse] is not strictly a matter to be addressed by the family, but also [can be addressed] by other members of society,” he said, adding that neighbors, neighborhood chiefs and police officers were also able to file the reports. Seto added that with assistance from neighborhood chiefs, the commission would issue stern warnings to abusive parents. “However, if they continue to commit [abuse] after the warnings, we will report them to police,” he said, as reported by — JP” See also: Justice and support for victims of child sexual abuse in Indonesia.

At the age of 18, she debated 50 pagan philosophers. Amazed at her wisdom and debating skills, they became Christians—as did about 200 soldiers and members of the emperor’s family. All of them were martyred. Sentenced to be executed on a spiked wheel, Catherine touched the wheel and it shattered. She was beheaded. Centuries later, angels are said to have carried the body of St. Catherine to a monastery at the foot of Mt. Sinai.” See picture of St. Catheriene of Alexandria. Saint Mary, Our Lady of Zapopan (Patron Saint against Floods) (Feast Date: October 5) Extract from Our Lady of Zapopan: “October 12th means Columbus Day to Americans, but to the good citizens of Mexico, October 12th is also the day the ‘Traveling Lady of Zapopan’ comes ‘home’ to spend the Autumn and Winter months in her stately basilica. . . . Guadalajara, capital and jewel of the state of Jalisco, celebrates ‘The Day of the Mestizo’ by rendering ecstatic homage to ‘The Little Virgin’ as Our Lady of Zapopan. She is Spanish in origin, but completely Mexican in the tradition of more than four hundred years that surround her cult. Brought to Zapopan by Father Antonio de Segovia in 1541, the ‘Little Virgin’, less than fourteen inches high, found herself in the heart of a territory, then called New Galicia, still under the conquest of Nuñe de Guzman. The precious statue, which the warm heart of the Mexican personifies, was the instrument by which Heaven vouchsafed to turn the fears and animosities of the natives into a confidence and love which enabled the zealous Franciscan to gather them into the fold of the Good Shepherd. The story is told that, as he preached, the little statue of Our Lady that he always carried with him, emitted rays of light. The miraculous radiance seemed to penetrate the souls of the Indians and convert them into vessels ready for the waters of grace.” See PICTURE of Our Lady of Zapopan.
