Africa (Green Beads)
Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Clement I, the Patron Saint of Mariners, may come to the aid of the Somalian refugees who lost their lives in the Red Sea shipwreck on July 4, and those whose lives theirs touched. Disaster (Shipwreck) (July 4, 2011)Map of Red Sea. Extract from Boat sinks oat off Sudan ‘killing 197’ Refugees: “About 200 people drowned in the Red Sea when a boat carrying migrants to Saudi Arabia sank off Sudan’s coast after catching fire, Sudanese media says. Only three people have been rescued, according to the Sudanese Media Centre (SMC), a state-linked news agency. A governing party official told the BBC he believed the passengers were Somalis likely to be fleeing the drought. The Red Sea is a well-known trafficking route for migrants wanting to reach Saudi Arabia and Yemen. . . . A senior official at Sudan’s Ministry of Information, Rabbie Abdellatti, linked the case to the food crisis in the Horn of Africa, which is affecting an estimated 12 million people It is the worst drought in 60 years. Its effects have been compounded by the violence in Somalia, which has been racked by constant war for more than 20 years – its last functioning national government was toppled in 1991. On Wednesday, the UN refugee agency said it estimated that a quarter of Somalis are either displaced within the country or living outside as refugees. Four Yemenis who allegedly owned the boat that sank in the Red Sea have been arrested in Port Sudan state, the SMC reports. The vessel had been at sea for four hours before catching fire – it is not known what caused the blaze.” See also: Red Sea boat sinking leaves ‘197 people dead’, Nearly 200 Migrants Feared Drowned Off Sudan as Boat Burns, Migrants Feared Dead as Boat Sinks, Refugee chief: ‘Heart is broken’ by hungry refugees fleeing Somalia, Rising death toll feared as drought spreads.Videos: Sinking boat kills 197 refugees near Sudan, Drought displaces Somalis.
Pope Saint Clement I , Patron Saint of Mariners (Feast Date: November 23) Extract from ST CLEMENT, POPE, MARTYR (A.D. 100: “St Clement, the son of Faustinus, a Roman by birth, was of Jewish extraction; for he tells us himself that he was of the race of Jacob. He was converted to the faith by St. Peter or St. Paul, and was so constant in his attendance on these apostles, and so active in assisting them in their ministry, that St. Jerome and other fathers call him an apostolic man; St. Clement of Alexandria styles him an apostle; and Rufinus, almost an apostle. . . . ‘Let every one,’ says the saint, ‘be subject to another, according to the order in which he is placed by the gift of God. Let not the strong man neglect the care of the weak; let the weak see that he reverence the strong. Let the rich man distribute to the necessity of the poor, and let the poor bless God who give :h him one to supply his want. Let the wise man show forth his wisdom, not in words, but in good works.’”See Picture of St. Clement I.See also: November 23 – Pope Saint Clement I: Patron Saint of Mariners (Multilingual), VIDEO: Saint Clement Pt1 of 11. Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Camillus, the Patron Saint of those who are sick, may come to the aid of those whose health has been affected by diabetes in New South Wales, Australia. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Oceania.
Disaster (Diabetes)Extract from: Diabetes rate soars in poorer areas: “THE rate of diabetes has increased by up to 40 per cent over five years in coastal retirement areas of NSW and has reached worryingly high levels in western Sydney – areas of the state least able to deal with the illness. New analysis shows the incidence of diabetes in NSW has increased by an average of 27 per cent in that period. . . . ‘It follows age but also less affluent areas.’ Overwhelmingly, the research showed diabetes to be a disease of poverty: the unemployment rate in the top 10 electorates for diabetes is more than twice that for the bottom 10; median household income is almost half; the number of Aborigines is close to seven times what it is for the bottom 10.”See also: Increase in the Contraction Rates of Diabetes in Australia: Study, Diabetes rate in adults doubles since 1980. Saint Camillus de Lellis (Patron Saint of those who are Sick) (Feast Dates: July 18, July 14) Extract from St. Camillus de Lellis, Founder and Patron: “He skipped school. Gambled. Fought. Born to lose? Far from it. Born to serve his brothers and sisters through his later dedication to the sick and the dying. Camillus de Lellis was canonized in 1746 and later declared patron saint of the sick, nurses and of hospitals. His life marked a turning point in medical care as we know it today. It also marked the beginning of a brotherhood that now spans the world and provides leadership in healthcare through Christian charity and love. Here is the following story of Camillus …the man…the saint…and the Order. On May 25, 1550, Camilla Compelli de Laureto – at almost sixty years of age – gave birth to Camillus de Lellis in Bucchianico, Italy. Camillus was welcomed with great joy, also with much anxiety, for his birth was preceded by a strange dream that profoundly disturbed his mother. . . . Camillus chose a red cross as the distinguishing badge for the members of his Order to wear upon their black cassocks, and he taught his volunteers that the hospital was a house of God, a garden where the voices of the sick were music from heaven. Once when he was discouraged, he heard the consoling words from the crucifix, ‘This is my work, not yours’. . . . After leading the movement throughout Italy, Camillus died on July 14, 1614. In 1742, Pope Benedict XIV proclaimed Camillus de Lellis blessed; in 1746 he canonized him, calling him the ‘Founder of a new school of charity’. This new school saw the sick in a new light. In Camillus’ own words, ‘The poor and the sick are the heart of God. In serving them, we serve Jesus the Christ’.” See PICTURE of Saint Camillus de Lellis. Saint Christina of Bolsena (Patron Saint of Mariners) (Feast Date: July 24) Extract from St. Christine’s History: “She was the daughter of Urbain, a rich and powerful magistrate who was a palace official and descendant of a famous Bofena family. But he was a heathen, she a Christian, At age 11 the beautiful Christina found herself much desired as a bride by young nobles, whom she rejected. Angered , her father locked her and 12 servants in a tower, placing in her cell the expensive idols of his heathen worship. Christina smashed them after an angelic vision, and had the priceless pieces distributed among the poor. This act seemed to have turned Urbain into the persecutor of his daughter. He had her whipped and thrown into prison. But Christina remained unshaken in her Faith, even after having her body torn and placed upon a grate over a fire (which miraculously was turned against her persecutors). After this, the unyielding, but pitiful girl was consoled by angels in her dungeon cell. Next, she was thrown into the lake of Bolsena with a stone around her neck, but again was saved by an angel. Even after her father died, Christina was to suffer for Christ the most inhumane tortures under Urbain’s successor. She finally was imprisoned, thrown into a furnace where she remained five days miraculously unhurt, survived in a pit of serpents, and had her tongue cut out. The martyr to be was slain by lances at Tyro, a city which once stood on an island in the lake of Bolsena, but which since has been covered by the waters. Her relics now lie in Palermo in Sicily.”See PICTURE of Saint Christina. See also: July 24 – Saint Christina of Bolsena, Patron Saint of Mariners (Multilingual).

The Erik was sold-out for a four-night trip out of San Felipe, 200 miles southeast of San Diego when it was struck by two rogue waves about 2:30 a.m. Sunday and sank near Isla San Luis in Baja California. The vessel was reported to have carried 27 tourists, most of whom are believed to have come from Northern California, and 16 or 17 crew members. One person was confirmed drowned and more than a half-dozen were missing but 37 — including all the crew members — were rescued or swam ashore, said a Mexican Navy spokesman at San Felipe.” See also: 1 Dead, 7 Still Missing After Chartered Fishing Boat Capsizes Off Baja Peninsula, One dead after tourist boat capsizes off Mexico. Saint Mary, Our Lady of Guidance (Patron Saint of Mariners) (Feast Date: May 19) Extract fromOur Lady of Guidance: “Our Lady of Guidance also known as the Nuestra Señora De Guia is enshrined in the Ermita Church. She is the titular patroness of the City of Manila. It is one of the oldest existing Marian images in the country. It was founded by a crew of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi on the shores of Manila Bay. It was assumed to have been left behind by Spanish missionaries who came to the islands earlier. The image was found lodging on the improvised altar made of Pandan palms. It was adored by natives who regarded it as a diwata. they were claiming that their ancestors owned the image. they told the Spaniards that the image has the power to make wishes come true. . . . A church document describes the images as follows: the image reveals a sarong-like bodice painted in the Chinese tradition of red, blue and gold paint… the unusual stance of the virgin, from the conservative stiffness of body line, has a bent torso very much like the Chinese goddess Kuan Yin. These characteristics shows the probability that the image may have come from an Asian or if brought by galleon traders, it could have been commissioned to an artist who gets inspiration from Asian models. After getting from the cult of pagan worship, the image was enshrined temporarily at the Manila Cathedral until a bayside church was constructed on the site it was found. In spite of its old age, the De Guia retained the ruddiness of its cheek and its youthful allure.” See PICTURE of Nuestra Senora de Guía. Asia (Yellow Beads)
Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of Saint Matthew the Apostle, the Patron Saint of Security Forces, may come to the aid of those affected by ongoing violence in Pakistan. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Asia.
Disaster (Ongoing Ethnic and Political Violence) Map of Pakistan Extract fromPAKISTAN: Violence rocks Karachi,: “The wave of ethnic and political tension in the Pakistani city of Karachi which left 90 people dead within four days last week has raised fresh fears that some minority groups could be the target. ‘My two sons are not going to their tuition classes or to the martial arts club they regularly attend, and my wife calls me in fear if I am even five minutes late getting home from work,’ said Haider Ali, 40, a Pukhtoon, and a member of the minority Shia Muslim sect, who have been repeatedly targeted. ‘I feel especially vulnerable due to both these factors, but we have nowhere else to go,’ he added. ‘My family moved here three generations ago; I have a good job here and this is the only home I know.’ The government of Sindh Province (in which Karachi is located) issued shoot-on-sight orders to law enforcers in a bid to control the situation, but the killings continued. ‘I am running out of the packaged cereals my nine-month-old baby eats, and also out of sufficient milk for the two older children [but] it is too risky to even walk to the corner shop,’ said Asiya Khan, 27, a mother of three. . . .” See also: Karachi attacks ‘kill over 1,000’, PAKISTAN: Thousands displaced by fighting in Kurram, Hundreds protest Pakistan cross-border attacks in eastern Afghanistan, Kurram violence: 10 Taliban killed as military crackdown continues.Videos: Around the World: Violence Kills Dozens in Pakistan, Scores killed in Karachi violence.
Saint Matthew, Patron Saint of Security Forces (Feast Date: September 21) Extract from ST. MATTHEW, APOSTLE: “Saint Matthew, the first-century tax collector turned apostle who chronicled the life and ministry of Christ in his Gospel, is celebrated by the Church today, September 21. Although relatively little is known about the life of St. Matthew, the account he wrote of Christ’s ministry – traditionally considered to be the first of the four Gospels – is of inestimable value to the Church, particularly in its verification of Jesus as the Messiah. . . . . Jesus most likely first encountered Matthew near the house of Peter, in Capernaum near the Sea of Galilee. The meeting of the two was dramatic, as Matthew’s third-person account in his Gospel captured: “As Jesus passed on,” the ninth chapter recounts, ‘he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, ‘Follow me’. And he got up and followed him.’” See PICTURES of Saint Matthew.
