Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Mary, Our Lady of Fatima, the Patron Saint of Nigeria, may come to the aid of those affected by Christmas Day terrorist church bombings in Nigeria. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Africa.
Disaster (Christmas Day Terrorist Church Bombings) Map of Nigeria. Extract fromDozens die as Christmas Day bombings sweep Nigeria,: Islamist sect Boko Haram claimed responsibility for a wave of Christmas Day bombings on Sunday, including an attack on a Catholic church that killed at least 35 people. Boko Haram spokesman Abu Qaqa claimed the bombings in a statement to the journalists’ association of Maiduguri, capital of the group’s heartland. The Christmas Day attacks show the growing national ambition of Boko Haram, which is responsible for at least 491 killings this year alone, according to an Associated Press count. The assaults come a year after a series of Christmas Eve bombings in Jos claimed by the militants left at least 32 dead and 74 wounded. The first explosion on Sunday struck St. Theresa Catholic Church in Madalla, a town in Niger state close to the capital, Abuja, authorities said. The first explosion on Sunday struck St. Theresa Catholic Church just after 8 a.m. The attack killed 35 people and wounded another 52, said Slaku Luguard, a coordinator with Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency. ‘We were in the church with my family when we heard the explosion. I just ran out. Now I don’t even know where my children or my wife are,’’ Timothy Onyekwere told Reuters. ‘I don’t know how many were killed but there were many dead.’ ‘I want to know if my wife is dead or alive,’ a man yelled as he tried to enter the area holding dead and wounded.” See also: Nigerian official condemns ‘mindless and cowardly’ church attacks that left dead, wounded, Christmas mass in Nigeria rocked by terrorist bombing. Saint Mary, Our Lady of Fatima (Patron Saint of Nigeria) (Feast Date: May 13)Extract fromFatima, Portugal “Our Lady of Fatima”: “As a great sign of the whole message truly coming from God, a marvelous miracle was worked in the sky above Fatima before 70,000 witnesses on October 13, 1917 at the time, date and place that Lucy and the other two children had prophesised in the name of Our Lady of Fatima. The children were told by Our Lady that God would perform a miracle so that people would believe in the apparitions. The date the children was October 13, 1917, in Fatima. On that date, 70,000 people came to see the phenomenon. The miracle occured with the sun. All could stare perfectly at the sun without blinking, or even hurting their eyes. While all were watching the sun, it rotated, got large and small, got close to the people, and got far away from them. The sun ” danced “. Every single person who was there testified to seeing the sun dance, even non- believers who immediately dropped onto their knees and begged for forgiveness.” See PICTURES of Our Lady of Fatima. The iron-ore train derailed following torrential rain in the Northern Territory caused by Grant, a tropical cyclone that triggered heavy flooding in some areas, swamping roads and stranding scores of people, police said. Its two crew members both managed to escape and were assessed by medical staff who were sent by helicopter to the scene, with the driver later airlifted to hospital with spinal injuries, according to local media reports.” See also: Train derailed in northern Australia floods. Saint Therese of Lisieux(Patron Saint of Australia) (Feast Date: October 1) Extract from St. Thérèse of Lisieux: “YOU KNOW, DEAR Mother, how much I love flowers; when making myself a prisoner at the age of fifteen [when Therese entered Carmel of Lisieux], I gave up forever the pleasure of running through the fields decked out in their springtime treasures. Well, never in my life did I possess so many flowers as after my entrance into Carmel. It is the custom for fiancés to often give their fiancées bouquets and Jesus didn’t forget it. He sent me in great abundance sheaves of corn flowers, huge daisies, poppies, etc., all the flowers that delighted me the most. There was even a little flower called corn-cockle which I had never found since our stay at Lisieux; I wanted very much to see it again, that flower of my childhood which I had picked in the fields of Alencon. And at Carmel it came to smile at me again and show me that in the smallest things as well as the greatest, God gives the hundredfold in his life to those souls who leave everything for love of Him.” See PICTURE of Saint Therese of Lisieux. Saint of Vladimir I of Kiev (Patron Saint of Russia (Feast Date: July 15) Extract from SAINT VLADIMIR, PRINCE OF RUSSIA, EQUAL TO THE APOSTLES: “Prince Vladimir was the first to embrace and choose the Heavenly Kingdom together with the Russian people. I say, ‘with the people’ because there were separate individuals before his time who were joining themselves to the heavenly kingdom, like his grandmother Olga, Theodore and John – martyrs of Kiev, and others. But Vladimir was the first to set out on the path of the Cross along with his whole people. For him, this could not have been but related to a big inner struggle, a struggle that was spiritual and more intense than the one endured by the Serbian King Lazar and by the last Emperor of Russia. Those two, being raised Christian, only had to choose from two options – to stand firm or not on the established path of Christian self-sacrifice. But at that time, the pagan Vladimir, a son of a man called “the wild leopard” had to decide on a completely new path, completely unknown in Russia until that time. That man who would not hold back from any earthly pleasures, who reached the limits of every looseness, debauchery, uncontrolled blood-thirstiness, thievery, violent vengeance – had to die with his old soul and start living with a new one. According to the words of Christ, ‘He who loses his soul shall save it.’”See PICTURE of Saint Vladimir. See also: July 15: Saint Vladimir I of Kiev: Patron Saint of Russia (Multilingual). Disaster (Migrant Boat Accident) Map of Cuba Extract from Haitian migrants found dead off Cuban coast: “At least 38 Haitian migrants have reportedly been found dead after their boat sank off Point Maisi in the east coast of Cuba. Eighty-seven others were rescued by the coast guard. The boat was spotted an estimated 100m off land by the Cuban officials, who recovered “the dead including 21 men and 17 women”, the Cuban civil defence department said in a statement on Sunday. There were no details on possible cause of the accident or the destination of the boat, but search and rescue efforts were still under way, the report said. Cuban officials said the Coast Guard and Red Cross continued searching for more survivors. The rescued have been moved to an international migrants’ camp at Point Maisi, where they have been given assistance, the statement said. Dilapidated and overcrowded boats carrying migrants from Haiti are often found in distress in the Caribbean Sea.” See also: Haiti migrants found dead off Cuba’s coast, 38 Haitian migrants die when boat sinks off Cuba, CTF/SOS DRS Recent Response to Disasters in America:Haiti,Chile.
Saint Balthasar (Patron Saint of Travellers) (Feast Date: December 6) Extract from Saint Gaspar, Saint Melchior and Saint Balthasar (First Century): “January 6 is the feast of these three Magi, who brought Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. The Magi brought Jesus go”ld to show that He was a king; frankincense to honor Him as God; and myrrh to greet Him as man. These Magi first saw the star which led them to Bethlehem on the previous March 25, the day, and at the moment, that Jesus was conceived in Mary’s womb. It took the Magi nine months and twelve days to reach Bethlehem, guided by the star. The star left them when they were in Jerusalem. But it shone again after the Magi left Jerusalem, and led them to the cave of Bethlehem. Our Lady let each of the Magi hold Jesus in his arms. They were given some of His baby clothes to bring back to the East by way of relics. The Magi returned to the East, to Persia and later were baptized there by Saint Thomas the Apostle, in the year 40. All three of the Magi were martyred for the Catholic Faith. Their names are now, and should always be called, Saint Gaspar, Saint Melchior and Saint Balthasar.” See PICTURE of Saint Balthasar. Asia (Yellow Beads)
Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Rose of Lima, the Patron Saint of the Philippines, may come to the aid of those affected by flooding due to Typhoon Washi in the Philippines. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Asia.
Disaster (Flooding-Typhoon Washi) Map of Philippines Extract fromPhilippine floods death toll jumps to nearly 1,500: “The death toll from flash floods that swept away entire villages in the southern Philippines climbed to nearly 1,500 on yesterday, as authorities widened their search for bodies. The Office of Civil Defense’s latest tally listed 891 dead in Cagayan de Oro and an additional 451 in nearby Iligan city. The rest came from several other provinces. Most of the dead are unidentified. ‘The search will continue as long as we are recovering bodies,’ said Civil Defense head Benito Ramos. He said that decomposing remains were retrieved floating in the sea as far as 60 miles (100 kilometers) from the two cities where a Dec. 16 tropical storm unleashed more than a month’s worth of rainfall in 12 hours, sending walls of water gushing into homes. One of the dead was a headless girl who appeared to have been hit by logs that were carried by flash floods, Ramos said. She was among 13 bodies retrieved by a team of navy sailors. Navy and coast guard divers were initially sent to find more bodies believed to be pinned down by logs scattered in the sea and along riverbanks, but Ramos said the operation had to be called off because waters were too murky. ‘It’s useless to dive when you can see nothing,’ he said. It was not clear how many more are missing. More than 60,000 homeless from hundreds of flood-ravaged villages spent a miserable Christmas in jam-packed schools and gymnasiums, while the United Nations launched an urgent appeal for $28 million to help the displaced — more than half the population of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, which are in the southern Philippines’ Mindanao region.” See also: Philippine flood death toll surges, Philippine flood toll rises again. Saint Rose of Lima (Patron Saint of the Philippines) (Feast Dates: August 23, August 30) Extract fromSAINT ROSE OF LIMA, VIRGIN—1617 Feast: August 23: “Rose of Lima has a special claim on our interest for she has the honor of being the first person born in the Western Hemisphere to be canonized by the Church. . . . Rose seems to have taken for her model St. Catherine of Siena, and, like the earlier saint, she experienced so ardent a love of God whenever she was in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament that exaltation completely filled her soul. Yet Rose was not without a practical side. Her father had been well-to-do, but when he lost money in mining ventures, the family’s fortunes reached a very low ebb. Rose helped out by selling her fine needlework; she also raised beautiful flowers and these too were taken to market. One of her brothers, Ferdinand, was sympathetic and understanding toward this sister who was so markedly “different.” As she grew to maturity, her parents were anxious to have Rose marry, and indeed there were several worthy aspirants for her hand. Rose did not wish marriage, and, to end the arguments and offers, she joined the Third Order of St. Dominic, donned the habit, and took a vow of perpetual virginity.” See PICTURE of Saint Rose of Lima.
