General Rosary Intention: That the Lord in His Divine Mercy – through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary – may build up His Kingdom, make these mysteries a reality in our lives, strengthen us in our common mission, and come to the aid of those for whom we pray.

Africa (Green Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of  St. Barnabas the Apostle,  the Patron Saint of Peace, may come to the aid of those affected by violence against aid workers in the Horn of Africa. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Africa.

Disaster (Violence Against Aid Workers) Map of Horn of Africa. Extract fromMSF closes largest medical centres in Somali capital: “NAIROBI, Jan 19 (AlertNet) – Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) has shut down two major medical centres in the Somali capital Mogadishu after two of its aid workers were shot dead by a former colleague last month, the international medical aid agency said on Thursday. In late December, an Indonesian doctor and a Belgian emergency coordinator were killed by a former local employee who was arrested shortly afterwards, still holding his pistol. ‘It is hard to close health services in a location where the presence of our medical teams is genuinely life-saving every day,’ Christopher Stokes, MSF’s general director, said in a statement. ‘But the brutal assassination of our colleagues in Hodan (district) makes it impossible for us to continue working in this district of Mogadishu.’” See also: MSF closes largest medical centres in Somali capital, Somalia: MSF shuts two big medical centres in Mogadishu, MSF closes largest medical centres in Somali capital, Refugee camps in the Horn of Africa at risk.  Read about the CTF/SOS DRS latest response to Disasters in Africa.

Saint Barnabas the Apostle (Patron of Peace) (Feast Date: June 11)Extract fromSt. Barnabas, Apostle: “St. Barnabas was born to wealthy Jewish parents on the Greek-speaking island of Cyprus, probably around the time of Christ’s own birth. Traditional accounts hold that his parents sent him to study in Jerusalem, where he studied at the school of Gamaliel (who also taught St. Paul). Later on, when Christ’s public ministry began, Barnabas may have been among those who heard him preach in person. At some point, either during Christ’s ministry or after his death and resurrection, Barnabas decided to commit himself in the most radical way to the teachings he had received. He sold the large estate he had inherited, contributed the proceeds entirely to the Church, and joined Christ’s other apostles in holding all of their possessions in common. Saul of Tarsus, the future St. Paul, approached Barnabas after the miraculous events surrounding his conversion, and was first introduced to St. Peter through him. About five years later, Barnabas and Paul spent a year in Antioch, building up the Church community whose members were the first to go by the name of “Christians.” Both Paul and Barnabas received a calling from God to become the “Apostles of the Gentiles,” although the title is more often associated with St. Paul. The reference to the “laying-on of hands” in Acts, chapter 13, suggests that Paul and Barnabas may have been consecrated as bishops on this occasion.”  PICTURE of Saint Barnabas. Oceania (Blue Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of  Bl. Jacinta Marto,  the Patron Saint of those who are Sick, may come to the aid of those affected by HIV/AIDS in Jayapura, New Guinea.  May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Oceania.

Disaster (HIV-AIDS) Map of Indonesia Extract from 54 students in Jayapura infected by HIV/AIDS: “The Jayapura branch of the AIDS Prevention Commission (KPA) has discovered that 54 students in Jayapura regency have become infected by HIV/AIDS. “These students would have been able to avoid this if they had come to us earlier to be tested,” KPA secretary Purnomo said on Sunday as quoted by kompas.com. He acknowledged, however, that this could be an “iceberg phenomenon”, meaning the figure might not represent the actual number of those affected by HIV/AIDS. The discovery of 54 infected students from Jayapura is just one part of the bigger picture, in which the KPA maintains that 796 people in the regency, from all social strata, have been infected by the disease.” See also: 18 Jayapura toddlers infected with HIV/AIDS, Eighteen Jayapura toddlers infected with HIV/AIDS.

Saint Blessed Jacinta Marto (Patron Saint of the Sick) (Feast Date: February 20)Extract from Blessed JACINTA MARTO OF FATIMA:“She called the moon ‘Our Lady’s Lamp.’ . . . During the first Apparition in May, 1917, Jacinta kept shyly in the background, but asked, charmingly, whether they should offer the Lady some of the bread and cheese they had brought for their lunch. Afterwards, Lucia insisted she should tell no one what they had seen. Jacinta vowed that she wouldn’t say a word, but later, when her parents returned from the market she rushed out exclaiming: ‘Oh, Mother! I saw Our Lady today!’ Over supper she related her story to the whole family. Her mother laughed but her father believed her. . . . After interviewing the children the parish priest suggested they might be the victims of a trick by the Devil. Lucia was terrified, though Jacinta assured her the Devil was ugly and lived underground in Hell. When Lucia, worried by all the pressure, suggested telling everyone she had lied, Jacinta and Francisco told her indignantly that that would be a lie. On 13th August, The Administrator, Santos, ‘kidnapped’ the children to prevent them going to Cova da Iria for the next Apparition, and threatened them with a cauldron of boiling oil. Jacinta cried bitterly, not at the thought of dying, but because she would never see her mother again. It may well be that she and Francisco connected the death threats with Our Lady’s promise to come soon to take them to heaven. . . . After they had been taken ill during the Spanish Influenza epidemic in October, 1918, Jacinta told her cousin that Our Lady had come and said she would fetch Francisco very soon, that Jacinta herself would go to two hospitals and be alone. Lucia relates in her memoirs how her little cousin said she never tired of telling Our Lord and Our Lady how much she loved them. . . . She was obsessed by the thought of Hell and saving sinners. . . . On the evening of 20th February, 1920, she asked to receive the Last Rites. A priest heard her confession and promised to bring her Communion next morning, but Jacinta died peacefully that night. Alone. She was almost eleven.”  See PICTURE of Blessed Jacinta Marto.  See also: February 20 – Blessed Jacinta Marto: Patron Saint of Prisoners and Those Who are Sick (Multilingual), VIDEO: Blessed Jacinta Marto. Europe (White Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of  St. Mary, Our Lady Star of the Sea,  the Patron Saint of Mariners, may come to the aid of those affected by the Costa Concordia shipwreck near Isola de Giglio, Italy. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Europe.

The women’s bodies were found near the ship’s Internet cafe, The New York Times reported. Twenty people are still believed to be missing. Only eight of the fifteen recovered bodies have been identified. The ship was carrying at least 4,229 people from 60 countries when it struck a rocky ledge and capsized Jan. 13 off the Tuscan coast. Italian officials say the ship may have been carrying unregistered passengers, some of whom may have been guests of crew members, the newspaper said.” See also: Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia: L.A. women describe escape. Saint Mary, Our Lady Star of the Sea(Patron Saint of Mariners) (Feast Date: Second Sunday of May) Extract from Stella Maris The Apotleship of the Sea: Stella Maris (The Star of the Sea) has long been the favourite title by which people of the sea have called on her in whose protection they have always trusted: the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her son, Jesus Christ, accompanied his disciples in their vessels, helped them in their work and calmed the storms.  And so the Church accompanies seafarers, caring for the special spiritual needs of those who for various reasons live and work in the maritime world–Pope John Paul II. . . The Star of the Sea: Is the most ancient of titles for Our Lady. It is premised that in the time of Our Lord the equivalent phrase of Our Lady in the Aramaic language of that day meant pilot, leader or guide–someone who could navigate through the sea or the desert by the stars and lead people to safety.  The stars were and are used as a guide to safety and to new life. The sea covers all the earth and symbolises all the people of the earth. Our Lady was therefore identified from the very earliest days of the Church as the guiding light to her son, Our Lord, for all the people of the earth.” See also:2nd Sunday in May – Saint Mary, Our Lady Star of the Sea (Stella Maria): Patron Saint of Mariners Multilingual), Chaplet of Our Lady, Stella Maris.

America (Red Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of  St. Paul the Apostle, the Patron Saint of the Diocese of Birmingham, Alabama, may come to the aid of those affected by winter tornadoes in that state. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in America.

Disaster (Winter Tornadoes) Map of Alabama Extract from Rare winter tornadoes rake Alabama; at least 2 killed, 100 injured: “A line of rare winter tornadoes roared through Alabama early Monday morning, ripping apart homes and businesses and prompting the state’s governor to declare a state of emergency. Two people were reported killed. The tornadoes combined with powerful thunderstorms and straight-line winds to topple trees and power lines, injuring at least 100 people. Windows were blown out of homes and cars as people were roused from sleep in the early morning hours. Some tornadoes struck near neighborhoods ravaged by twisters that killed 240 people last spring, said Jennifer Ardis, press secretary for Gov. Robert Bentley. She said authorities were trying to confirm reports of a total of four people killed in the storms. ‘We have reports of damage from at least seven counties,’ Ardis said. Officials postponed a meeting previously scheduled for Monday to discuss the state’s response to last spring’s tornadoes. Emergency workers were searching for victims and clearing trees and debris that blocked some people from leaving their homes. A 16-year-old girl was killed in the town of Clay and an 82-year-old man died in Oak Grove in north-central Alabama, according to local officials.” See also: Birmingham, Alabama Storm 2012: Searchers Work To Rescue Trapped People, Two killed by storms in Alabama. Saint Paul the Apostle (Patron Saint of the Diocese of Birmingham, Alabama) (Feast Dates: January 25, February 16, June 29, November 18) Extract from St Paul the Apostle: On         the road to Damascus, “a light suddenly flashed around him.” He fell to the ground and heard the Lord’s voice asking him ‘Saul, Saul, why are persecuting me?’ His traveling companions heard the voice but could not see anyone. He got up from the ground but could not see.  He was totally blind. He carried on to Damascus with the assistance of his men. In the meantime, a disciple in Damascus name Ananias was instructed by our Lord in a vision; he was to go to a certain house where he would find Saul to which he would deliver the Lord’s message and instructions. Saul regained his sight and was baptized.  What makes the conversion of Saul to now St. Paul so amazing, is the fact that Saul was the staunchest enemy of the disciples at that time.” See also: January 25, February 16 (St. Paul Shipwrecked), June 29, November 18 – Saint Paul the Apostle: Patron Saint of Greece, Picture of St. Paul and Litany of St. Paul.

Saint Isabella of France (Patron Saint of Those Who are Sick) (Feast Date: February 22, 23, 26) Extract from February 26: Saint Isabelle of France: “Remembered for extreme devotion to the Lord, even as a child, Saint Isabelle requested spiritual direction and permanent confessors from Pope Innocent IV, who allowed her to retain some local Franciscans for that post. As she matured, she became even more devoted to the Lord, through the direction of the Franciscans, eventually breaking off several engagements (arranged for political reasons by her brother who had assumed the throne), and refusing to marry so as to remain virginal for the Lord. Isabelle resided in the royal castle for much of young adult life, but lived a cloistered life, similar to that of a religious. She refused the lavish appointments and meals offered to her, instead subsisting on meager rations, and donating what she saved to the poor. Her days were spent in service to those in need, specifically the sick and the destitute.” See PICTURE of Saint Isabel of France.  See also: February 26 – Saint Isabella of France: Patron Saint of Those Who are Sick(Multilingual).
