Africa (Green Beads)

Intention– That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Swithun, the Patron Saint of Drought Relief, may come to the aid of those refugees affected by water shortages in Sudan. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Africa.

Disaster: Water Shortage Map of Sudan Extract from Sudan refugees face dire water shortages: “JUBA, South Sudan, April 27 (UPI) — Water shortages are threatening the lives of tens of thousands of Sudanese refugees in South Sudan who need to be moved quickly, an aid agency said. The estimated 37,000 refugees in South Sudan’s Jamam camp in the Upper Nile region also face a growing threat of fatal disease, the British aid group Oxfam said Friday. Oxfam said in a news release there are fears more refugees will arrive to escape conflict along the border between Sudan and South Sudan. ‘We are fast running out of time and options in the midst of a huge humanitarian crisis. … The only solution is for people to be moved urgently,’ Pauline Ballaman, head of Oxfam’s operations in Jamam, said in the release.” See also: “Sudan refugees flee south to camps, Water in Crisis – Spotlight on Sudan, Videos: Sudan conflict: 37,000 need water, Safety concerns for those fleeing Sudan violence, Official: Sudan warplanes bomb South Sudan, Flood of refugees hits camp near Sudan border. Saint Swithin: Patron Saint of Drought Relief (Feast Dates: July 2, July 15)Extract from  The Golden Legend: The Life of Saint Swithin: “Saint Swithin, the holy confessor, was born beside Winchester in the time of Saint Egbert, king. He was the seventh king after Kenulf that Saint Birinus christened. For Saint Austin christened not all England in Saint Ethelbert’s days, but Saint Birinus christened the west part of England in the days of Kenulf the king. And at that time this holy Saint Swithin served our Lady so devoutly that all people that knew him had great joy of his holiness, and Elmeston, that was in that time Bishop of Winchester, made him priest. .. . when Elmeston the Bishop of Winchester was dead, Swithin was made Bishop there after him, whereof the people were full glad, and by his holy living he caused the people to live virtuously, and to pay their tithes to God and holy church. . . . Saint Swithin guided full well his bishopric, and did much good to the town of Winchester in his time. He did do make without the west gate of the town a fair bridge of stone at his proper cost. And on a time there came a woman over the bridge with her lap full of eggs, and a reckless fellow struggled and wrestled with her, and brake all her eggs. And it happed that this holy bishop came that way the same time, and bade the woman let him see her eggs, and anon he lift up his hand and blessed the eggs, and they were made whole and sound, ever each one, by the merits of this holy bishop, and being then glad she thanked God and this holy man for the miracle that was done to her.” See picture of St. Swithin.  See also: July 2, July 15 – Saint Swithin: Patron Saint of Drought Relief, Swithun (Multilingual), Saint Swithun. Oceania (Blue Beads)

Intention –That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Therese of Lisieux, the Patron Saint of Aviation and of Russia, may come to the aid of those affected by the plane crash in Indonesia. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Oceania.

Disaster: Plane Crash Map of IndonesiaExtract from Indonesia searches for Russian jet wreckage: “A Russian Sukhoi Superjet 100 on a demonstration flight with about 50 people on board is missing south of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, according to Indonesian search and rescue officials. The airliner was on a demonstration flight for potential buyers when it disappeared off the radar on Wednesday. ‘We suspect the plane crashed, but we’re not yet certain,’ rescue chief Marsdya Daryatmo told reporters. ‘We tried to send two helicopters to search for the plane … but because of bad weather and strong winds they had to return.’ By midnight, hundreds of rescuers had set up three posts around the mountain. ‘We arrived here very late at night, and we plan to set out at dawn. Others are already searching by foot,’ Joshua Banjarnahor, a rescuer at a post set up at Cidahu town, told the news agency AFP. ‘There are hundreds taking part in the search and helicopters will again go out Thursday at sunrise.’ The aircraft was carrying Indonesian businessmen and Russian embassy officials, the transport ministry said. Journalists were also on board. The jet, made by the Russian company Sukhoi, radioed a distress message before disappearing. The Ria Novosti news agency said there were at least eight Russians among the passengers.” See also: Russian plane goes missing in Indonesia, Russian jet ‘missing in Indonesia’, Russian plane on test flight vanishes in Indonesia. Saint Thérèse of Lisieux: Patron Saint of Russia and Aviation (Feast Date: October 1) Extract from Letters: “The road on which you are walking is a royal road, it is not a beaten track, but a path traced out by Jesus Himself. The spouse of the Canticles says that, not having found her Beloved in her bed, she arose to look for Him in the city but in vain; after having gone out of the city, she found Him whom her soul loved! . . . Jesus does not will that we find His adorable presence in repose; He hides Himself; He wraps Himself in darkness. It was not thus that He acted with the crowd of Jews, for we see in the Gospel that the people were carried away when He was speaking. Jesus used to charm weak souls with His divine words, He was trying to make them strong for the day of trial . . . But how small was the number of Our Lord’s friends when He was silent before His judges! . . . Oh! what a melody for my heart is this silence of Jesus . . . He made Himself poor that we might be able to give Him love. He holds out His hand to us like a beggar so that on the radiant day of judgment when He will appear in His glory, He may have us hear those sweet words: “Come, blessed of my Father, for I was hungry and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink; I did not know where to lodge, and you gave me a home. I was in prison, sick, and you helped me.” It is Jesus Himself who spoke these words; it is He who wants our love, who begs for it . . . He places Himself, so to speak, at our mercy, He does not want to take anything unless we give it to Him, and the smallest thing is precious in His divine eyes . . .” See Picture of St. Therese. Europe (White Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Nina of Georgia (Ninny of Georgia), the Patron Saint of Georgia, may come to the aid of those affected by flooding in Tbilisi, Georgia.  May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Europe.

Disaster: Flooding Map of GeorgiaExtract fromDeadly floods batter Georgia’s capital: “At least five people were killed in Georgia’s capital overnight after torrential rains caused a local river to burst its banks, causing destruction in residential areas, officials said. Authorities said that a mother with her two children, an elderly woman and an elderly man died in Tbilisi’s Ortachala neighbourhood, which was hit hardest by the deluge, after the Kura River flooded on Saturday night. All five were trapped in their homes and crushed when the buildings collapsed. One of the children was six months old and the other was five. At least 30 other people sought medical help after the disaster struck. According to eyewitnesses, the water in some areas rose to three metres, lifting parked cars and damaging numerous houses. The flood also cut off electricity in a number of neighbourhoods. Gigi Ugulava, Tbilisi’s mayor,  pledged to provide financial assistance to all flood victims. He was unable to estimate the damage caused by the flood but said it was ‘quite substantial’. Georgia’s military was assisting the rescue effort by helping to clear debris and evacuate people from flooded areas.: See also: Georgian capital Tbilisi hit by floods – five dead.  VIDEOS: State of emergency declared in Georgia, Deadly floods hit Georgian capital, Deadly floods hit Georgian capital.

Saint Nina of Georgia (Ninny of Georgia): Patron Saint of Georgia (Feast Date: January 14, January 27) Extract from Saint Nino: “The virgin Nino of Cappadocia was a relative of Great-martyr George and the only daughter of a widely respected and honorable couple. When Nino reached the age of twelve, her parents sold all their possessions and moved to Jerusalem. Soon after, Nino’s father was tonsured a monk. He bid farewell to his family and went to labor in the wilderness of the Jordan. . . .  (Her mother) left her daughter Nino in the care of an old woman, Sara Niaphor, who raised her in the Christian Faith and related to her the stories of Christ’s life and His suffering on earth. It was from Sara that Nino learned how Christ’s Robe had arrived in Georgia, a country of pagans. Soon Nino began to pray fervently to the Theotokos, asking for her blessing to travel to Georgia and be made worthy to venerate the Sacred Robe that she had woven for her beloved Son. The Most Holy Virgin heard her prayers and appeared to Nino in a dream, saying, ‘Go to the country that was assigned to me by lot and preach the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will send down His grace upon you and I will be your protector.’ . . .  the Most Holy Theotokos presented her with a cross of grapevines and proclaimed, ‘Receive this cross as a shield against visible and invisible enemies!’ When she awoke, Nino was holding the cross in her hands. She dampened it with tears of rejoicing and tied it securely with strands of her own hair[1]. Nino related the vision to her uncle, Patriarch Juvenal, and revealed to him her desire to preach the Gospel in Georgia. Juvenal led her in front of the Royal Doors, laid his hands on her, and prayed, ‘O Lord, God of Eternity, I beseech Thee on behalf of my orphaned niece: Grant that, according to Thy will, she may go to preach and proclaim Thy Holy Resurrection.’” See PICTURE of Saint Nino of Georgia. America (Red Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Mary, Our Lady Who Appeared, the Patron Saint of Brazil, may come to the aid of those affected by flooding there. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in America.

Disaster: Flooding Map of America Extract from Cities in Brazilian Amazon Faces the Worst Floods in Years, Emergency State Declared [PICTURES]: “A swath of the Brazilian Amazon is under a state of emergency as rivers overflow in one of the worst floods on record. The floods have been caused by the rising Rio Solimoes, one of the two main branches of the Amazon river, in places like Anama lying west of Manaus. While the region is experiencing one of the worst floods in history, the country’s northeast faces its worst drought in the last 30 years, affecting well over 500 towns and cities. This is reportedly not the first climatic crises that the country has faced in recent years. In 2011, over 500 people died in floods in south-eastern Brazil. Heavy rains have lead to massive mudslides hitting several towns, resulting in thousands being made homeless. The BBC earlier reported that the death toll during the 2011 floods surpassed the devastating 1967 mudslides in Caraguatatuba, Sao Paulo state, in which up to 430 people perished. Some of the main regions affected during the floods were the mountainous regions of Nova Frigurgo, Petropolis and Teresopolis. The rains caused all local rivers to overflow in the area during the period resulting in numerous landslides and widespread damage, washing away houses alongside rivers and burying neighbourhoods.” See also: Brazil sends 500 troops to help Amazon flood victims. Saint Mary, Our Lady Who Appeared (Our Lady Aparecida): Patron Saint of Brazil (Feast Date: October 12) : Extract from Our Lady of Aparecida (Nossa Senhora Aparecida Patroness of Brazil: “The people of Guarantinqueta decided to hold a great feast to honor the Count, and a lot of fish would be needed.  Among the fishermen were three men who always prayed to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception — Domingos Garcia, Joco Alves, and Felipe Pedroso. Before going out to fish, they asked God to help then in this difficult task, to find enough fish at this time when no fish were available. Felipe knelt and prayed, along with his companions, “Mother of God and our Mother, we need to find fish!” After many hours of catching nothing, the fishermen were very depressed. Joco cast his net once more near the Port of Itaguagu, but instead of fish, he hauled in the body of a statue. The three cast their net again, and brought up the statue’s head. After cleaning the statue they found that it was Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Naming their find Our Lady Aparecida, they wrapped it in cloth and continued to fish; now their nets were full. They very carefully washed the statue and saw that it was Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. They wrapped her in some cloths and continued to fish. Domingo commented, ‘We worked all night and have found no fish!’ Felipe had a proposition: ‘Let’s continue to fish with faith in the Virgin Aparecida (who appeared).’ From this moment on, the net became very full with fish. This was the first miracle of Our Lady of Aparecida.”  See Picture of the Lady Who Appeared. See also:  October 12 – St. Mary, the Lady Who Appeared (Our Lady Aparecida): Patron Saint of Brazil.

Asia (Yellow Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Saint Magnus of Füssen, the Patron Saint against Hailstorms, may come to the aid of those affected by destructive storms in China.  May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Asia.

Disaster (Hail Storms) Map of ChinaExtract fromChina: 40 killed in violent hailstorm: “Beijing, May 13, 2012 (AFP) – Forty people were killed when a brief but violent hailstorm and torrential rain swept through a mountainous region of northwestern China, the local government said Sunday. Eighteen others remained missing in Min county, a disaster-prone area of Gansu province, while 87 had been sent to hospital, the county government said in a statement on its website. Officials said 29,300 people were evacuated after rain and hail battered the county for just 60 minutes late Thursday afternoon. It ‘wreaked havoc’ on all of the county’s 18 townships and affected more than two-thirds of its 450,000 residents, the state-controlled Xinhua news agency reported. ‘Roads were blocked, houses collapsed, farmland was destroyed, and the power supply and telecommunications services were disrupted by the extreme weather,’ the agency said, quoting Xu Guangyao, a senior county official. Saint Magnus of Füssen: Patron Saint against Hail (Feast Date: September 6) Extract from  St. Magnus: The history of St. Magnus is shrouded in obscurity. The only source is an old ‘Vita S. Magni’, which, however, contains so many manifest anachronisms that little reliance can be placed on it. It relates that two Irish missionaries Columbanus and Gall, spent some time with Willimar, a priest at Arbon. Here Gall fell sick and was put in charge of Magnus and Theodore (Maginald and Theodo), two clerics living with Willimar, while Columbanus proceeded to Italy and founded the monastery of Bobbio. When Gall had been miraculously informed of the death of Columbanus he sent Magnus to pray at his grave in Bobbio. Magnus returned from Bobbio with the staff of Columbanus and thereafter they followed his rule. After the death of Gall, Magnus succeeded him as superior of the cell. About this time a priest of the Diocese of Augsburg, named Tozzo, came as a pilgrim to the grave of St. Gall and invited Magnus to accompany him to the eastern part of Algäu. Magnus proceeded to Eptaticus (Epfach), where Bishop Wichbert of Augsburg received him and entrusted him with the Christianization of Eastern Algäu. He penetrated into the wilderness, then crossed the River Lech at a place which is still known as St. Mangstritt (footstep of St. Magnus) and built a cell, where afterwards the monastery of Füssen was erected, and where he died.” See PICTURE of St. Magnus.
