Africa (Green Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Sunniva, who was buried by a landslide, may come to the aid of those affected by the lanslides in DR Congo mines. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Africa.

Disaster: Landslide Map of DR Congo Extract from Congo Mine Landslide Claims The Lives Of 60 Miners: “A landslide at a gold mine in a remote corner of northeast Congo has left at least 60 people dead, a local administrator said Thursday. Faustin Drakana Kananga told The Associated Press that the accident took place Monday in Pangoyi, but rescue efforts have been hampered because the dense jungle area is controlled by members of a militia. The miners were in an area about 100 meters (yards) below the surface at the time of the landslide, he said. Congo, a vast nation in central Africa, is mired in poverty. The nation has been scarred by decades of dictatorship and war. Many Congolese try to eke out a living through small-scale mining, a dangerous and unregulated practice.” See also: Landslide leaves scores dead in DR Congo mine, Dozens die in Congo mine collapse. Saint Sunniva, who was Buried by a Landslide (Feast Date: July 8) Extract from Saint Sunniva: “Daughter of a tenth century Irish king. To avoid an arranged marriage with an invading pagan king, she, her brother Alban, and several female companions fled her home only to settle in a cave on the island of Selje, off the Norwegian coast. Sometime later, Viking locals decided that the group was stealing cattle, and sent an armed band to attack them. When they arrived, they found the cave sealed by a landslide; none of the group of exiles was ever seen alive again. Years later, around  995, after reports of strange lights in the area, King Olaf Tryggvason had the cave opened; Sunniva’s body was found incorrupt, and the  king built a church there in her honour.” See picture of Saint Sunniva. He died (probably) on 30 September 1093. Numerous miracles were reported at the site of his tomb and his cult developed to the point where he became recognized as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church, celebrated in the Roman Martyrology on 30 September. The monks of Montevergine regarded him as a disciple of William of Vercelli and accordingly argued for 30 September 1193 as the date of his death.” See also:September 30 – Saint Amatus of Nusco: Patron Saint against Earthquakes.

Saint Olga of Kiev (Feast Date: July 11) Extract from Prominent Russians: Princess Olga of Kiev: “Princess Olga’s life was full of great deeds described in numerous historical records . . . .The Old Russian annals describe four types of vengeance organized by Olga. First, she ordered the capture of the 20 matchmakers who had come to Kiev and had them buried alive. The Princess then asked the Drevlyans to send better ambassadors to her, but as soon as they arrived, they were burned in a bathhouse. Soon after that Olga went to the land of the Drevlyans, supposedly to have a funeral feast in memory of her murdered husband. Having made her enemies drunk during the feast, the governess then ordered them all killed. The annals report about five thousand victims in this third act of revenge. The last vengeance took place in the year 946 when Olga traveled around the land of the Drevlyans in order to gather tributes. She besieged the town of Iskorosten, which refused to pay her. According to legend, the Princess asked that each household present her with a dove as a gift. Then she tied burning papers to the legs of the doves and let them fly back to their homes. As a result, the entire town was destroyed by fire. . .  One of the most well-known among Olga’s actions was her conversion to Christianity. She was one of the first to bring this religion to the pagan society of Kievan Rus. According to the Primary Chronicles, Olga was baptized in Constantinople either in 955 or 957. Her son Svyatoslav didn’t support his mother’s decision and was worried about losing the respect of the army because of Olga’s new faith. Apparently, she had a big influence on her grandson, Vladimir the Great, who in 988 made Christianity the official religion of Kievan Rus. . . . In 1547 the Orthodox Church proclaimed Princess Olga a saint and equal-to-the-apostles. She became one of only five women to be honored with this status in the history of Christianity.” See also: July 11 – Saint Olga of Kiev: Patron Saint of Converts and Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Saint Francis Borgia: Patron Saint against Earthquakes (Feast Date: October 10) Extract from St. Francis Borgia: “Francis was a young nobleman at the court of the King of Spain. He became a Duke when he was only thirty-three and lived a happy, peaceful life with his wife Eleanor and their eight children. But unlike so many other powerful nobles, Francis was a perfect Christian gentleman, a true man of God and his great joy was to receive Holy Communion often. This happy life ended when his beloved wife died. Francis did something that astonished all the nobles of Spain; he gave up his Dukedom to his son Charles and became a Jesuit priest. So many people came to his first Mass that they had to set up an altar outdoors, but his Superior tested him by treating him in exactly the opposite way he had been used to all his forty-one years of life. He who had once been a Duke had to help the cook, carrying wood for the fire and sweeping the kitchen. When he served food to the priests and brothers, he had to kneel down in front of them all and beg them to forgive him for being so clumsy! Still he never once complained or grumbled. The only time he became angry was when anyone treated him with respect as if he was still a Duke.”  See PICTURE of St. Francis Borgia.
