General Rosary Intention: That the Lord in His Divine Mercy – through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary – may build up His Kingdom, make these mysteries a reality in our lives, strengthen us in our common mission, and come to the aid of those for whom we pray.

Africa (Green Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Ursula, the Patron Saint of Students, may come to the aid of those affected by the terrorist massacre of at least 36 students at  the Federal Polytechnic in Mubi, Nigeria. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Africa.

Disaster: Terrorist Massacre of Students Map of Nigeria Extract from Gunmen open fire on students in Nigeria: “Scores of students were killed after gunmen burst into a university residence in north-eastern Nigeria hours after a disputed student union election led to rival gangs rampaging through the town. At least 32 students were shot or stabbed at Federal Polytechnic Mubi as armed union members attacked the residence during the night, a university official said. Residents said rival students killed the winner of the elections late on Sunday, then spread out in gangs across the town. ‘They were going door to door to find their victims, but anybody in the wrong place at the wrong time could have been killed,’ said one student. The spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, Yushau Shuaib, said in a statement: ‘The crisis in Mubi is suspected to have been fuelled by campus politics after an election at the [college].’ A student told Associated Press that students had recently found a warning, believed to have been written by members of the radical Islamist sect Boko Haram, pasted on the gate of the female hostel in the campus ordering the authorities to evacuate the school. Mubi, in north-east Nigeria, has become awash with weapons and violence since Boko Haram began attacks there. More than 1,100 people have died in the group’s battle to impose a strict interpretation of sharia law on Nigeria’s 160-million strong population, evenly split between Muslims and Christians.” See also: Dozens of students ‘shot dead’ in Nigeria, Gunmen kill students at Nigerian college. Saint Ursula: Patron Saint of Students (Feast Date: October 21) Extract from SAINT URSULA and her COMPANIONS: Virgins and Martyrs at Cologne (†383): “Saint Ursula was born in Great Britain of Christian parents; her father, Maurus, was king of Cornubia in Scotland. Ursula was sought in marriage by a young pagan prince, but had already vowed her life and her heart to Jesus Christ.  In the year 383 she was boarded onto a boat with a large number of young girls and Christian women whom a Roman conqueror wished to give as wives to his soldiers, after having endowed them with rich terrains. But during the crossing of the Channel a storm arose, and the ships, instead of reaching western Gaul, were driven towards the mouth of the Rhine. The Huns who at that time were ravaging Europe saw the ships, and were making ready to pillage them and inflict on these virgins and women a dishonor more dreaded by them than death. Commanded by Ursula, they resisted heroically and so well that suddenly the sentiments of the barbarians changed. They took up their arms to be rid of this peaceful army. Soon the victims fell under the blows of the executioners, and their souls winged their way to heaven.  The prince of the Huns, struck by Ursula’s beauty, spared her at first; he tried to console her for the death of her companions and promised to marry her. When she did not assent he shot her with an arrow, and this consecrated virgin fell with the others.” See PICTURE of Saint Ursula. Oceania (Blue Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of Saint Joseph of Cupertino, the Patron Saint of Air Travelers, may come to the aid of those affected by the plane crash in Queensland, Australia. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Oceania.

Disaster: Plane Crash Map of Australia Extract from Plane missing in Queensland with six people on board: THE pilot of a missing light airplane had been fundraising for charity before his craft carrying five people vanished in southeastern Queensland. Des Porter, 68, was giving scenic flights in his prized red 1930s biplane at an airshow in central Queensland this morning, according to the organiser of the Monto Fly-In. Mr Porter is one of six people on board the 1930s de Havilland DH84 which left the town of Monto, 180km west of Bundaberg, shortly after 11am (AEST). It’s believed the other passengers were two elderly couples and Mr Porter’s partner. The plane had been due to arrive at Caboolture Airport, north of Brisbane, about 2.15pm (AEST), but never arrived. A distress call from Mr Porter shortly after 1pm was picked up by a Nine Network helicopter pilot. Mr Porter said he was having difficulty positioning himself and wanted assistance, the helicopter pilot said. The aircraft’s emergency beacon was activated at about 2.45pm (AEST), according to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). Police and Australian Search and Rescue are coordinating an air and land search which is west of the Imbil area and about 70km north of Caboolture.”  See also: Plane Missing In Australia Found: No Survivors. Saint Joseph of Cupertino: Patron Saint of Air Travellers (Feast Date: September 18) Extract from Joseph of Cupertino: “Joseph’s father, Felice Desa was a poor carpenter who died before the boy was born. Creditors drove his mother, Francesca Panara, from her home, and Joseph was born in a stable. Starting at age eight, he received ecstatic visions that left him gaping and staring into space. He had a hot temper, which his strict mother worked to overcome. . . .He applied to the Capuchins, was accepted as a lay-brother in 1620, but his ecstasies made him unsuitable for work, and he was dismissed. Abused by his family, he continued his prayers, and was accepted as an oblate at the Franciscan convent . . . he became a cleric at 22, a priest at 25. Joseph still had little education, could barely read or write, but received such a gift of spiritual knowledge and discernment that he could solve intricate questions. His life became a series of visions and ecstasies, which could be triggered any time or place by the sound of a church bell, church music, the mention of the name of God or of the Blessed Virgin or of a saint, any event in the life of Christ, the sacred Passion, a holy picture, the thought of the glory in heaven, etc. Yelling, beating, pinching, burning, piercing with needles – none of this would bring him from his trances, but he would return to the world on hearing the voice of his superior in the order. He would often levitate and float (which led to his patronage of people involved in air travel), and could hear heavenly music.  For 35 years he was not allowed to attend choir, go to the common refectory, walk in procession, or say Mass in church. . . . But Joseph retained his joyous spirit, submitting to Divine Providence.” Picture of St. Joseph of Cupertino. Europe (White Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Mary, Our Lady of the Pillar of Saragossa,  the Patron Saint of Spain, may come to the aid of those affected by flooding there.  May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Europe.

Disaster: Flooding Map of Spain Extract from Spain floods: Ten die in Malaga, Almeria and Murcia: “Flood victim: ‘A car floated into my house. I have nothing left. I’m ruined.’ . . . The strength of the floods overturned cars, closed roads and railway lines, damaged bridges and homes, and forced hundreds to leave their properties. The hardest hit areas were the provinces of Malaga and Almeria, and the Murcia region. Further north in the town of Gandia, a tornado struck a temporary fairground, injuring 35 people, 15 seriously. Across parts of southern Spain, the clean-up has begun. Until now, there had been very little rain this year across Spain, and the south was particularly dry after the summer. So much rain, in such a short space of time led to some of the worst flooding Spain has seen in years, says the BBC’s Tom Burridge in Madrid.” See also: At least 10 die in floods in southern Spain, Flash floods kill 10 in Spain as torrential rain causes havoc. Saint Mary, Our Lady of the Pillar of Saragossa: Patron Saint of Spain (Feast Date: October 12) Extract from Our Lady of the Pillar – Saragossa, Spain (ca. 40 AD): “After the crucifixion , resurrection and ascension of Jesus, his Apostles began to spread the message he left throughout Israel and shortly thereafter, through the Roman empire. One of these Apostles, James (the Greater), reportedly travelled as far west as Spain to the village of Saragossa in north east Spain. While James was there, he became disheartened because of the failure of his mission. Tradition holds that while he was deep in prayer Jesus’ Blessed Mother appeared to him and gave him a small wooden statue of herself and a column of jasper wood and instructed him to build a church in her honor: ‘This place is to be my house, and this image and column shall be the title and altar of the temple that you shall build.’ The jasper column and the wooden statue can still be seen on special occasions at a church that houses them. About a year after the apparition James arranged to build a small chapel in Mary’s honor, the first Church ever dedicated to the honor of the Virgin Mary.” See Picture of  Our Lady of the Pillar – Saragossa Spain.  See also: October 12 – Saint Mary, Our Lady of the Pillar of Saragossa: Patron Saint of Spain.

America (Red Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Gianna Beretta Molla, the Patron Saint against Abortion, may come to the aid of those affected by abortion throughout America. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in America.

Disaster: Abortion Map of America Extract from  Cardinal Dolan on the US Election, the Radical Abortion License, Religious Liberty, Marriage, Debt and Solidarity, “;In the document “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship,; published by the bishops of the United States, we are reminded that, “In the Catholic Tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation. This obligation is rooted in our baptismal commitment to follow Jesus Christ and to bear Christian witness in all we do.” And so, as I leave for Rome, I want to share with you some of the concerns that I will bring with me to the tombs of the apostles, SS. Peter and Paul, and to Assisi, the town of St. Francis. I am concerned about a culture that has become increasingly callous about the radical abortion license, and a legal system that affords more protection to endangered species of plants and animals than to unborn babies; that considers pregnancy a disease; that interprets ‘comprehensive health care” in such a way that it may be used to threaten the life of the baby in the womb (and, it should be noted, to exclude the undocumented immigrant as well).’ ‘I am concerned as well for the infirm and elderly who are nearing the end of life, that they will not be treated with the respect, dignity and compassion that is their due, but instead be encouraged to seek a hasty death before they can become, according to some, ‘a burden to society.’” Voters in Florida Are Set to Weigh in on Two Contentious Ballot Questions, Abortion in Cases of Rape: Todd Akin’s Gaffe Spotlights Catholic Teaching — Again, Abortion, The Catholic Church and Abortion. Saint Gianna Beretta Molla: Patron Saint against Abortion (Feast Date: April 28) Extract from Saint Gianna Beretta Molla: “Tenth of thirteen children born to Alberto and Maria Beretta, she was a pious girl raised in a pious family; one sister became a nun, and two brothers, including Enrico Beretta became priests. While in college, she worked with the poor and elderly, and joined the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. Physician and surgeon, graduating from the University of Pavia in 1949, she started a clinic in Mero, Italy in 1950. She returned to school and studied pediatrics, and after finishing in 1952 she worked especially with mothers, babies, the elderly, and the poor. Active in Catholic Action, and a avid skier. She considered a call to religious life, but was married to Pietro Molla on 24 September 1955 at Magenta. Mother of three, she continued her medical career, treating it as a mission and gift from God. During her pregnancy with her fourth child, she was diagnosed with a large ovarian cyst. Her surgeon recommended an abortion in order to save Gianna’s life; she refused and died a week after childbirth, caring more for doing right by her unborn child than for her own life. Today that child is a physician herself, and involved in the pro-life movement.”  Picture of St. Gianna Beretta Molla. Asia (Yellow Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Peter Gonzales,  the Patron Saint of Mariners, may come to the aid of those affected by the ferry accident near Lamma Island, west of Hong Kong. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Asia.

Disaster: Ferry Accident near Lamma Island Map of Hong Kong Extract from Dozens dead after passenger vessels collide off Hong Kong: “At least 36 people have died after two passenger boats collided off Hong Kong’s Lamma Island on Monday evening, throwing more than 100 people into the sea. The crash happened on a night when Hong Kong’s busy waters were even more crowded than usual, as the city celebrated China’s National Day. One of the vessels, owned by The Hong Kong Electric Company, was carrying company employees and their families to watch the scheduled fireworks display when it was struck by a passenger ferry traveling from Hong Kong Island to Lamma. Government officials said the collision occurred off Lamma’s coast at around 8:20 p.m. local time. ‘I thought we’d hit a rock or a lighthouse,’ said Chris Head, a school teacher who was on the passenger ferry that crashed into the Hong Kong Electric vessel. He said the force of the impact threw him out of his seat at the back of the ferry, which was not very full of people. As the damaged ferry began to move toward the pier in the small town of Yung Shue Wan on Lamma, Head said he could see the other boat had started to sink into the water vertically, like the Titanic.” See also: Causes of Deadly Hong Kong Crash Probed,   Hong Kong police arrest 7 in harbor collision that killed 38 people. He was educated by his uncle, the Bishop of Astorga, named canon of the local cathedral, famous for his penances and mortifications, joined the Dominican Order, preached and made chaplain of the court of King St. Ferdinand III. He converted and influenced the soldiers of his country, evangelized, and died on Easter Sunday. He was canonized by Pope Benedict XIV in 1741. Peter evangelized throughout his country and all along the coast. He had a special fondness for sailors.
