Extract from:  Malaria funding short, but some get what they need:  “Global funding for malaria is less than half the $4.9 billion needed in 2010 to prevent and treat the disease that kills around 850,000 people a year, a study showed on Saturday. Researchers writing in The Lancet medical journal said that 21 countries — including 12 in Africa — now get enough or nearly enough donor help to control disease. However, 50 countries where most people at risk of the disease live do not get enough funding to fight malaria. . . .”  and AIDS/HIV & MALARIA STATISTICS:  “The overall prevalence of malaria in young children in Tanzania was 18%. In rural areas, 20% of children carried the malaria parasite compared to 7% in urban areas. Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini (Patron Saint against Malaria) (Feast Date: November 13) Extract from St. Frances Xavier Cabrini: “Frances Xavier Cabrini was the first United States citizen to be canonized. Her deep trust in the loving care of her God gave her the strength to be a valiant woman doing the work of Christ.  Refused admission to the religious order which had educated her to be a teacher, she began charitable work at the House of Providence Orphanage in Cadogno, Italy. In September 1877, she made her vows there and took the religious habit.. . . She found disappointment and difficulties with every step. When she arrived in New York City, the house intended to be her first orphanage in the United States was not available. The archbishop advised her to return to Italy. But Frances, truly a valiant woman, departed from the archbishop’s residence all the more determined to establish that orphanage. And she did. . . . At her canonization on July 7, 1946, Pius XII said, ‘Although her constitution was very frail, her spirit was endowed with such singular strength that, knowing the will of God in her regard, she permitted nothing to impede her from accomplishing what seemed beyond the strength of a woman.'” See also Frances Xavier Cabrini(Multilingual), SAINT FRANCES XAVIER CABRINI VIRGIN, FOUNDRESS—1850-1917 (EN), SANTA FRANCISCA JAVIERA CABRINI (SP),DISCORSO DI SUA SANTITÀ PIO XIISULLA FIGURA EROICA DI SANTA FRANCESCA SAVERIO CABRINI (IT), SAINTE FRANÇOISE-XAVIER CABRINI(FR), Franciszka Ksawera Cabrini, dziewica i zakonnica(PO). Saint Mary, Our Lady of Mercy (Our Lady of Ransom)(Patron Saint of Spain) (Feast Date:  September 24) Extract from: September 24 – Feast of Our Lady of Ransom: “The world goes on its laborious way, proud of its riches, of its power, of its arms, of its genius; the Church goes onward along the course of ages with an even step, trusting in God only, to Whom, day and night, she lifts her eyes and her suppliant hands. Even though in her prudence she neglects not the human aid which Providence and the times afford her, not in these does she put her trust, which rests in prayer, in supplication, in the invocation of God. Thus it is that she renews her vital breath; the diligence of her prayer has caused her, in her aloofness from worldly things and in her continual union with the Divine will, to live the tranquil and peaceful life of Our very Lord Jesus Christ; being herself the image of Christ, whose happy and perpetual joy was hardly marred by the horror of the torments He endured for us. . . .”  See PICTURE of Our Lady of Mercy.  See also: Virgin of Mercy (Multilingual), Our Lady of Mercy (EN)Old Calendar: Our Lady of RansomNuestra Señora de la Merced (SP), Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes San Gerardo Sagredo (SP),  Beata Vergine Maria della Mercede (IT), NOTRE-DAME de la MERCI (FR),  VIDEOS: Our Lady of Ransom (EN), MUSIC: Glory to God/Our Lady of Ransom, Sep. 24 (EN),Sep 24 – Homily: Our Lady of Mercy (EN), Nuestra Señora De la Merced de Bahay Pare HYMN (SP); PRAYER for the Feast of Our Lady of Ransom, PRAYER to Our Lady of Mercy – St. Augustine of Hippo.

America (Red Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Rita of Cascia,  the Patron Saint of Impossible Causes, may come to the aid of those affected by the Storm of September 24 in Haiti.  May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in America.

Disaster (Storms)(September 24, 2010)Map of Haiti. Extract from Children in Haiti face new risks following violent storm:  “At least six people were killed and hundreds more injured during a storm that tore through tents and temporary structures in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince a few days ago. According to the UN, Friday afternoon’s storm damaged or destroyed around eight thousand tents, leaving eleven thousand families who lost their homes in January’s earthquake, without shelter once more. There are new threats to the health and safety of camp communities, especially children. Aid workers from Plan International are advising communities to be conscious of new dangers like fallen power lines and deep floodwaters, which may be moving faster than they appear. Waterborne diseases are also a concern as a result of damaged toilets and stagnant water that has been sitting in several camps for the last few days. Camp committees are working to repair latrines and showers, with around two hundred toilets reportedly destroyed. Plan will soon be distributing hygiene kits to storm survivors. . . .”  See also: Haiti storm ‘kills five’ and wrecks quake refugee camps, Haiti storm kills five quake survivors, lashes tent city, Double storm causes widespread destructionPHOTOS: Surprise storm lashes Haiti with fierce winds, 5 deaths reported.

Saint Rita of Cascia (Patron Saint of Impossible Causes) (Feast Date: May 22) Extract from:  St. Rita of Cascia Feast Day — May 22:  “Rita was born in a small village near Cascia, Italy in 1381. Her parents had waited many years for a child and they gave thanks to God for Rita’s birth. As a child, Rita often visited the nuns at the Augustinian convent in town and hoped to be able to join them one day. Rita’s parents had other plans for her. It was the custom in Rita’s time for parents to arrange marriages for their children.  Rita put aside her own desires and was obedient to her parents. She married Paolo Mancini, the town watchman. They had two sons. Rita remained close to God through her busy days as a wife and mother. . . . One day, Paolo got caught in the middle of a battle . . . was killed. Not long after, both of Rita’s sons died of an illness that swept through her village. Rita was now alone in the world. Her thoughts returned to her childhood dream of becoming a nun. . . . . in time, Rita’s prayers were answered. She was welcomed into religious life when she was thirty-six years old. . . . One day, about twenty years after she entered the convent, she was meditating on Christ’s Passion and crucifixion. As she prayed, a small wound appeared on her forehead. It looked like a mark from a thorn, like the crown of thorns Jesus wore. This mark remained on Rita’s forehead the rest of her life. It was a reminder of the great sacrifice Christ made out of love for all people. . . .”  PICTURE of Saint Rita of Cascia. See also: Rita of Cascia (Multilingulal), ST. Asia (Yellow Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of Saint Remigius of Rheims,  the Patron Saint against Epidemics, may come to the aid of those affected by Cholera in India.  May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Asia.

Disaster (Cholera Outbreak)Map of India Extract from Outbreak: Several dead and hundreds taken ill in Orissa’s tribal villages:  “. . . as media expresses shock and agencies respond to the mounting death toll in the tribal villages reeling under diarrhea and cholera outbreak, . . .  the toll is rising. A local daily has put out a figure of 150 dead, whereas the government agencies peg it at 42. The number of people battling the water borne infection is in thousands. . . . ActionAid is delivering medicines, material and relief to 35 villages of Sunakhandi and Parsali Gram Panchayat of Rayagada and 25 villages of Lanjigarh Block of Kalahandi district. Vulnerable and inaccessible: The affected villages are predominantly tribal inhabited and have to be reached on foot, by crossing streams and patches of lush forests. This becomes a daunting task during rains. However, the aid workers are pointing out that vulnerability of the indigenous people and need for an organized approach to reach them have been highlighted time and again with outbreaks each monsoon. This time around the situation has turned grim and a lack of preparedness has only made things worse. Despite medicines and doctors being there, an organized response was missing for many days after the reports of outbreak. Most of the deaths have taken place during night and women are the worst affected in this outbreak. During monsoon downpour, access to food sources within the forest becomes difficult for the tribal families. This lower nutritional intake along with stagnant water makes them vulnerable to infections. . . .  See also:  Diarrhoea, cholera outbreak in 7 districts in Jammu & Kashmir and  Lack of medical facility takes 7 lives in Orissa’s Rayagada districtVIDEOS: Cholera Outbreak Hits East Indian State, Cholera Epidemic in Orissa.

Saint Remigius of Rheims (Patron Saint against Epedemics) (Feast Date: October 1) Extract from Saint Remigius:  “He studied literature at Reims and soon became so noted for learning and sanctity that he was elected Archbishop of Reims in his twenty-second year. Thence-forward his chief aim was the propagation of Christianity in the realm of the Franks. The story of the return of the sacred vessels, which had been stolen from the Church of Soissons testifies to the friendly relations existing between him and Clovis, King of the Franks, whom he converted to Christianity with the assistance of St. Waast (Vedastus, Vaast) and St. Clotilda, wife of Clovis. Even before he embraced Christianity Clovis had showered benefits upon both the Bishop and Cathedral of Reims, and after the battle of Tolbiac, he requested Remigius to baptize him at Reims (24 December, 496) in presence of several bishops of the Franks and Alemanni and great numbers of the Frankish army. Clovis granted Remigius stretches of territory, in which the latter established and endowed many churches”  See PICTURE of Saint Remigius.
